Unlike
the magazines we are not limited by printing space
& budgets and do not worry about making advertisers
happy by giving our readers a biased opinion.
Our objective is to give you the facts and our
honest opinions allowing you to make a more informed
purchase decision.
I
can not stress that what follows is only my opinion
and you should do your own research to determine
what brace is right for you. I have listed these
in no specific order other than the CTi2 at top
because it not an off the shelf brace it is fully
custom.

The
CTi2 is incredible. Off the leg it feels
the most rigid of all the braces tested.
On the leg it feels just as strong. The
extension stops take some work to adjust
but no more than 15 minutes a leg. There
is a reason that this brace has such a great
reputation in the industry. Simply put its
design is pure function and materials are
the best available which means however it
is not cheap. The
weak link is the patella cup. It is a poor
after thought on a very well designed brace.
This brace is at its best in a sport that
does not require the cup.
For
$750 to $1500 for one I would NOT
purchase the brace for any sport especially
motocross or collision sports. If my sport
was golf or another non collision sport
AND I had insurance that would pay
for it this brace would be my choice, but
under no circumstance would I pay for the
brace when there are others that offer equal
support and better impact protection. If
your sport is non-contact and you can get
a prescription this is your brace.

What
can I say other than "I am sold".
I had my own ideas of what a brace should
offer and I was certain that I would forever
be wearing a pair of CTi2's. When I received
the CTi2 in the mail I was impressed and
was sure that none of the others would compare.
Then the Cell's arrived and that thought
was gone. Out of the box I could tell that
it had been designed for function and the
patella cup was unmatched. From the lace
up system to the ease of adjusting I love
everything about this brace. It feels as
supportive, if not more so than the CTi2
and at $549 for a PAIR it is the
best available knee brace on the market.
Compared to the rest of the market this
brace is WAY under priced, I would
have paid $750+ for a pair and would have
still thought I got a deal, but the guys
at Asterisk are as concerned with helping
the sport as the bottom line. The materials
used and quality craftsmanship of this brace
are impressive. Not to mention that the
people at Asterisk are some of the best
I have ever had the pleasure of dealing
with.
It's
my opinion that the Cell offers the most
support and protection of any off the shelf
brace available. I also took all of
the braces to my surgeon (team doctor for
several professional sports teams in Dallas).
Without telling him what I though I asked
his opinion. He agreed that the Cell was
the best and has since requested information
from Asterisk. (Note: he has not seen the
Defender Pro yet) If you want a rigid frame
brace that offers outstanding support and
protection for a great price the Cell is
the only answer.

Having
toured their plant I can tell you that they
have done their homework. They have a great
reputation in the medical industry for post
operative braces and the 7075-T6 alloy is
the material to use for a flexible frame
brace. The brace is so comfortable and slim
it is hard not to like. The Rage is also
the lightest weight. The patella cup is
leaps and bounds better than the CTi2, it
is very well designed and manufactured.
The padding on the inside is the best period,
way different than any of the others.
Some
people are going to love the flexible frame
others are not. I prefer the rigid frame
but this is the best flexible frame brace
available on the market today and I
have no problem recommending it. If you
are looking for the ultimate flexible frame
brace look no farther, the Rage is the best,
hands down.

Out of the box I was as impressed with the
Defender Pro as I was with the Cell. It
is a work of art. It is important to know
that this brace is a semi-custom brace.
Yes it is off the shelf but different size
prefabricated calf, knee and thigh components
are put together to give you the custom
fit. The Defender Pro offers the most
impact protection of all the braces
tested because completely encompasses the
knee, shin and thigh, leaving no gaps anywhere.
The brace has proven its self on slopes
with the World Cup professional skiers.
The only brace to offer a tibial hinge which
will allow it to eliminate "twisting" of
the knee by rotating with the natural movement
of the knee. The support the brace offers
is simply awesome. I had too much padding
inside the brace when I tested it and it
was causing it to ride high on my leg. With
the guidance of Kelvin Doyle the brace is
now fitting better than my first ride with
it. Easily it is the most comfortable brace
tested and it was super slim while
gripping the tank.
It
is my opinion that the Defender Pro is the
best of the bunch. It offered me
the support qualities that I liked with
the Cell and offered even more protection
from impact. If you want the ultimate in
knee protection this is the brace for you
but it is not cheap.

The
Edge is the off the shelf version of the
CTi2. The extension stops take some work
to adjust but no more than 15 minutes a
leg. Its design and materials are the same
as the CTi2 but it is cheaper and the flexible
cuff allows the brace to fit different size
legs with out having to make it custom.
Like
the CTi2, the weak link is the patella cup.
It is an poor after thought on a very well
designed brace. This brace is at its best
in a sport that does not require the cup.
For
$525 for one I would NOT purchase
the brace for any sport especially motocross
or collision sports. If my sport was golf
or another not collision sport AND
I had insurance that would pay for it this
brace might be my choice, but under
no circumstance would I pay for the brace
when there are others that offer equal or
better support and better impact protection.
It has its
place in the market, just not in the market
of dirt bikes.
