All depends on the rider. What's best for me, isn't always what's best for the next guy. Then there's the whole opinion on what "the best" is. It's not a questoin that has ONE definate answer. I suggest you spend time reading these forums and you'll get alot of opinions on what people like and dislike.

I bought a 2006 KTM 250XC as for me it was the best. If you want speed, check out the KTM 250XC-W (only the XC was avalible when I went shopping)

Most people will agree that KTM's XC/XC-W/EXC bikes are just about as good as it gets for woods/enduro racing.

BUT, if you're not racing and don't have to have the latest and greatest, a KDX is a great trail/enduro bike as well.

Any mx'er will do as well, there are many people that know how to make a crosser work really well off-road. Any bike that you buy will benefit from suspension work, and once that is done you can tailor the engine to work as you want it to ie low end, middle or top.

I ride an '02 Cr 250 and it works really well. I've put a lot of time into it getting it to work the way I want, but now I've got a bike that I can ride faster for longer periods of time. The Hondas also have great durability, but any current 2-st will do.

GasGas DE250 or KTMXC/XC-W for regular trail riding. GasGas EC250 for extremely tight, gnarly stuff.

There are only 3 choices made for woods.

Husqvarna WR 250 - Best value. Older design but stable, turn well, and have a good enduro motor and suspension.

GasGas - Best suspension, smoothest motor. Good for short riders.

KTM - Best aftermarket, lots of dealers, Probably most expensive and they still need spark arrestors, lights, kick stands(xc model). Good resale unlike the 2 bikes above.

Otherwise you can convert a MX bike. The YZ is a popular start.
