New suspension design for motocross tricks - tailwhip

So motocross riders can now do backflips and 360s on their bikes. They can almost do all the same stunts as a BMX rider, but they can't do tailwhips. Why? The forks can't rotate....but what if they could?

I started some basic research on this over a year ago while still in college. It didn't really go far. I had big hopes for a job with a motorcycle manufacturer, or even one of the suspension companies, but I ended up in the oil field. Good job, just different. I was thinking of the prospect of a patent, but whatever, I just want to see this happen.

So, what happens when you combine:

You should end up with a motocross bike that you can spin the forks 360 degrees without any problems. The cable detangler is for the throttle. They make hydraulic swivels that could be used to transfer the front brake and a hydraulic clutch action. If it is possible to design a dual cable detangler, then you could stay with a traditional cable clutch. Cannondale's single fork uses linear needle bearings. I don't have any idea how Honda seperated the linear and rotational degrees of freedom on it's Xaxis concept bike.

Yes this can be designed and work. I'm guessing it would weigh a little more than a traditional fork, but this would open up a world of new tricks. Let the tailwhips begin.

Well, I'm very happy to see that Travis Pastrana had a similar thought, although different execution.

X Games Moto X Best Trick. See the picture of Travis's barspin bike. I'm not sure who did the engineering, but I think the only way to make the steering stem survive the forces is to increase the size. Honda's Xaxis had a huge 3 or 4 inch stem.

I'm really curious to find out more about his bike.

Hey wow, look what you find when you surf the net a little bit. This is what I had in mind. Basically an upsized mountain bike front suspension, and a really large steering stem.
