Broken head bold, what now?

Hey guys,

I'm really bummed out now! When I was torguing the head bolds down, one of them snaped off in the cylinder.

So do I have to replace the cylinder?

Can I drill out the remains of what is in the cylinder?

Or can I run with 5 head bolts instead of 6, lol!

Any help would be much appreciated, Thanks

yeah thats exactly what happened to my CR125 stud when I was torqing it. I just brought my cylinder to the nearest machine shop, and they drilled out the stud, and made a wider stud hole, then they tapped it, and put a ring thread inside, i dunno what they call it, and I bought a new stud, and it screwed right on. It costed me $40... and that idea just running 5 head bolts instead of 6 doesn't work, I tried it and antifreeze just spits out the seal.

If you haven't done this type of repair before I'd suggest pulling the cylinder back off and have a machine shop fix it for you. It's quite possible that they can just remove the broken stud with a tool called an easy out. If they need to drill it completely out its not a big deal, they will just use a thread insert which will be stronger then the original threads.Don't get stressed out,its not a big deal. It won't be too exspensive either. You might want to have a good look at the rest of the studs . Don't consider running 5 bolts.

Thanks guys,

Ya I was only kidding about running with the 5 bolts, lol! I am actually going to give it to a friend of mine to take to work with him. He works in a machine shop and can do it there alot easier than I can here in my basement with have the tools.

I was thinking of doing all the holes while I'm at it. The one snapped so easy. I would hate to get it fixed and then get it home to have it happen again. That would suck some real ass, lol!

Thanks for the replys, Jay

Note: Its always a good idea to change cylinder studs at the time of top end rebuild
