Hey im going to race my first desert race and dont really want to spend 88 bucks for a sparky to just sit there if i dont like desert. so i was thinking maybe i could fit a thin pieec of steal and then put a metal screen over and clamp it onto the pipe. im sure that i can get one to work but my question is would the forest people allow that or does it have to be store baught. please help o any suggestions please suggest

i am not positive but USFS approved spark arrestor does not include a chunk of back door screen

You'd have to check your rulebook, but I think it needs to be an approved spark arrester. Perhaps you can borrow one?

Buy a spark arrestor. It just makes sense.

LOL I tried to make my own spark arrestor one time. I cut out a piece of some old lint screen from a dryer and put it on a 1985 cr500. It looked good and legal to me. Then a ranger came to our camp one time when we were riding and he's looking at this screen on the pipe. He isn't sure what to think at first cause they use to just stick the pipe with a stick to see if it had a sparky. But he was no fool and told us that we can't ride it anymore. Maybe he happened to see a piece of lint on it or something. It was funny though. but no it does not count as legal.
I don't understand what the big deal is cause there is no way that the little spark that comes out could start a fire. But yet I'm sure that we have been blamed for em.
