Sneak Peek!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Okiewan

Shhh.....
I considered that we couldn't pull it off in time.
I considered that we could have a hard time reaching a concensous.
I worried that vendors would be slow to react.

I shouldn't have.
You determined what application the build is for, you stayed focused, you avoided unessesary bling (well, we did need to add two little things for fun )... no bickering, no hurt feelings. Everyone involved really came together big time. The suppliers were awesome. Everyone did the site proud!

Here's the bike you built!
All the details here

The DRN bike shipped to DirtRider Mag today.
HUGE Props to AJ for getting it all done and all the DRN'ers who proved that a bike CAN be "built by commitee".

Those really came out nice...congrats on the whole project.

On a side note, I really think you guys set the standard on how the other projects will be judged. No bickering, smooth process from start to finish...very impressive to say the least

And as far as that 500AF, I am so in bike lust...

SWEEEEET

Steve

Posted by: AJ Waggoner

Actually its more -
A big thanks to the dirtrider.net community for the oppurtunity to build DRN's bike for this test,
and another big thanks to all the companies that stepped up big time ,
to get us the products and services in time to meet a strict and looming deadline
The Service Honda *AF crue* of Neil and Chris put in long hours ,under the gun last minute ,
to get this thing completed with thier usual great attention to detail, and quality craftmanship..

Posted by: CaptainObvious

Very nice job DRN bike commitee. AJ certianly knows how to build a dream machine.

Posted by: BSWIFT

Thanks AJ, Neil, and Chris. Awsome is an understatement.

Posted by: Vic

Just an awesome piece!

Couple o' questions;

Why the 250X frame?

What's the total cost?

Posted by: likelite

that thing is awesome.it would make the ultimate off-road weapon even here in the northeast.aj can i put a down payment on an 07 now?great job to everyone involved.

Vic-

The 06 CRF500AFX is $9,599
with all those options
a *rough guesstimate* is $14,080.
Keep in mind lots of big items there you can't really see,
like WR gear sets , cooling fan option, porting, suspension work etc etc..

On the "why " an X frame -
well not just frame, entire chassis..

We still make the CR500AF (based on the CRF250R chassis) we just dint add the Rrrrrr.. CR500AFRrrr , not much *pirate* in us I suppose..

The CR500AFX is built on the CRF250X chassis, for fundamentally the same reasons that Honda makes an *R* and *X* version.

The X being aimed at a more off road market with the 18" rear, Odometer, kickstand ,lighting, suspension settings, linkage ,larger fuel tank, etc fundamentally all off road oriented -
additionally for the cali guys-
the important *elgibilty* for a cali green sticker. (an R framed bike would not be)
The two frames are basically identical, other than moiunting points for a kickstand.

Posted by: Vic

Actually, what I'm really wondering is why the 250 F chassis as opposed to the 450 or 250 two-stroke.

Posted by: AJ Waggoner

Vic -
On past models I certainly used the CR250 two stroke chassis..98 thru 2004.
and kept changing with each model year ,and with each new frame generation.
(even made a limited edition run in 03? 04? using the CR125 chasis)

But in 04/05 Honda did not update the 2 stroke CR's with the latest frame generation,
So i moved on to the latest frame and chassis design which was the CRF250's.
Why step backwards?
A 06 CR250 has the same frame as an 02 CR250, and i would expect the 07 CR250 to be the same as well ,so when would it change?
The 500AF was originally built for the main reason of updating a *dated* chassis,,
so i'm certainly not going to stagnate it now..

On the 450 thing- There are no real positive reasons to use a CRF450 as a starting point,
and a several reasons not to.*shrugs*

Thanks, AJ.

Posted by: woodsguy2000

Awesome bike, if I win the lotto my check's in the mail!

Posted by: crazy4nitro

Outstanding Bike. Did anyone give it a test ride? if so Post up! Will this Bike Be at Dirtweek 2006?

Posted by: Masterphil

That thing is BADASS! Are those graphics a one time deal, or are they for sale anywhere?

Posted by: mylesc

Holy moly, that thing is the ultimate woods weapon! Awesome job!

Posted by: crazy4nitro

Guess What,I have a new Wallpaper Now.

Posted by: Tony Eeds

Thanks AJ, Neil and Chris for all the effort putting the dream bike together. That is one fine machine!

I may have missed it because I have been buried in work, but is there a thread with links for us to personally thank all the contributors?

Posted by: KiwiBird

Sweet job guys

Posted by: bsmith

Everybody Involved, thanks for your hard work, overtime, and dedication

That is one awsome Bike and I'm looking forward to the showdown!!!!

Posted by: Patman

I don't believe there is a showdown or shootout or anything like that. The intent was just to see what each site could create and let it stand on it's own merits.

Posted by: Okiewan

No shootout.

Of course hypothetically speaking if there were we'd kick everyones butt, but you knew that already

Posted by: Masterphil

You guys know how those damn journalists are. It dosen't matter what they say, a title like this: "Internet Forum Bike buildoff SHOOTOUT!" sure would sell more mags.

Is there a projected publication date?

Posted by: Okiewan

August .. which means July on the stands.

Posted by: D Lafleur

AJ, you and the crue have outdone yourself again. My DRN brothers and sisters, this thing is better than I envisioned. What a machine. We really need to have this bike at the Dirtweek, were ever it may be. I will pay to throw a leg over it.

PS. I cant wait to see the look on Jimmy L.'s face when the electric start doesnt work.

Posted by: BunduBasher

just saw the TT DRZ475TT - holy moly - a $20k bike !!! :o

Posted by: D Lafleur

Amongst those of us with the access, does AJ have a cost tally for our project? I bet we smoke the 20K DRZ everywhere, at probably 2/3 the cost.

Posted by: MrLuckey

I thought AJ said somewhere that it'd cost close to 15k to buy one like DRN setup.

Posted by: Okiewan

Yup.. $14,800 was the final.

Posted by: Red Mamba

Sometimes looks deceive but how is the overall performance? That's a pretty boy right there.

Posted by: rm_racer

Bike looks GREAT guys. Thanks to AJ, Neil and Chris for putting this awesome bike togeather for us!

500ccs, WR transmission, Eric Gorr porting and MX-Tech suspension.
Nuff said.

Posted by: Red Mamba

How about putting DV12 on that machine for the outdoor season, i bet you he will smoke both Ricky and Bubba if he doesn't crash his brains out. Just joking

Posted by: cnielse5

Man, seeing that picture makes all kinds of body fliuds flow!

Posted by: tuckers20

yer kudos

Posted by: webbo.78

Cool wheels ( not literally)

Posted by: mg89

Cool Bike

Posted by: qtrmiler

Didn't have time to check all posts but I hope the tester is on the large side. The bars seem high and wide. How about checking overall width and narrow down to 31" for us regular sized guys. Bike sure has a lot of bling and it'll probably work most anywhere. Just concerned on bar width/height with the under bar damper mount.

Posted by: stevet

sweet!

Posted by: mxislife92

thats freakin sweet!!!

Posted by: kiwijohn

Bading ding..... braaaaaaap....

Posted by: motoracer25

that is one sexy beast
