C'mon, I know your thinkin it.

Who's in?

My Vote for Troy and or Troy overflow.

Posted by: the Eel

Me and Rhona .. or is that Rhona and I ? Yeah we're in.

Posted by: KiwiBird

IN!

Posted by: kelsorat

In and bringing the family this time

Posted by: placelast

I'll be hanging out at camp.

Troy is good; all the way to the back, esp. the last flat spot before the downhill near the creek & potties.

Thats what Im thinking, good area to have a community fire and private camps around.

I will have family and possible friends along. Im not yet sure what days I will be going.

Posted by: thumbs

Not sure yet.

Posted by: scar tissue

We'll be there in some fashion. Either me comng up solo or with the family.

Posted by: Boodac

It's looking like Ill be in China during the fourth. Man this absolutely sucks since the Kennedy Meadows, July 4th weekend is a tradition for me. Well Ill be think of you guys out having a great time riding while I’m dealing with those commies issed:

Posted by: MrLuckey

Nikita and I will be there. I'll probably camp at Fish Creek in the usual spot.

Posted by: scar tissue

So is everyone heading up Friday or Sat?

Posted by: the Eel

Saturday for me ...

Posted by: jbmunnoch

I am new to california and am desperately searching for good places to ride in Kings/Fresno county. I looked up kennedy meadows and couldn't help but notice it was so close to my area, is there something going on there for the Fourth??

Posted by: scar tissue

Yes for the forth of july a bunch of us head up to ride - camp. new comers are always welcome. Keep an eye on this post as we get closer more details will follow.

Posted by: 2strok4fun

jbmunnoch- come on up, a great place to ride and a great group to ride and hang with. Be sure to look up the Kennedy meadows that is north of Kernville/ Lake isabella and not up near Yosemite.

Ill be going up Saturday am and leaving Tuesday the 4th. Looking to camp at Troy Meadows camp.

Posted by: Kav

I'll swing by and hang out, Eel you going to bring back my Guinness?

Posted by: jbmunnoch

hey guys, thanks for the invite!! I am going to try to round up a couple of buddies to come down, a couple of questions though, are 2-strokes red tagged there as well. Probably a stupid question but like I said I am fairly new to riding in california, I have been out here for a few years but I was in San Diego before and didn't have to work so hard to keep myself entertained!! I know that you can't ride in Pismo from memorial weekend til sometime in August and I was just wondering if it was the same in all state parks and if kennedy meadows was a state park.

Posted by: placelast

Red-stickered bikes okay - no restrictions there. It's a national forest; Sequoia, to be exact. My son's and I have been going every summer since '99. Not sure which day I'll arrive but sooner than later and but will be spending more days (overnights) than usual.

Troy Meadows it is.

Oh: and Eddie would go...(come to Troy - you'll like it better.)

Posted by: the Eel

Kav - I'll bring your Guinness and then some.

Posted by: acesnkush

Kennedy meadows?? 4th july... Nice... Isnt it past red rock??

Two things you should consider while up in Kennedy Meadows. First you definately will need a spark arrestor. Second, be prepared for sound testing. We were up there last year and they pulled several riders off at Troy Overflow to sound test our bikes. They werent enforcing sound levels unless you were way above 96db. So be prepared!

Posted by: 2strok4fun

Boodac, are you going? My wife wants to make sure that all the women folk are going.

Posted by: Boodac

Im not sure yet. Work has me scheduled to be in China about that time, however, the kids and the wife may be heading up there to ride anyways. Im hoping to be be back for a breather and hopefully be up there to ride before going back. Ill let you know.

Posted by: kelsorat

Now the wife is starting to back out. I'll still be there.

Posted by: the Eel

rhona may be out also due to a job opportunity ... so it may be all riding, all the time, for me.

Posted by: 2strok4fun

Arrrggghhh! You guys are killin me. If all the girls back out it will be little or no riding for me, or at least we'd leave on Mon instead of Tue.

C'mon. You guys just arent trying hard enough. Get out there and sell! Everyone knows that nothing is better for the complexion than fresh mountain air mixed with campfire smoke and bike exhaust followed by a cool stream skinny dip.

Posted by: Boodac

2strok4fun, does that mean we have to endure you running around in your Speedos before the mosquitoes chase your butt into the river again?

Posted by: 2strok4fun

they werent my speedos, they were my shiny hiney riding shorts.

Posted by: kelsorat

I was looking forward to bringing the family. First problem was I waited too long to book a RV. Secondly one of my wife's friends invited her to go to some tree-hugger,berkinstock wearin, yoga retreat. I was blown away that she would even consider camping in a tent in NM for a week with a bunch of other hairy armpitted alpha females, but hey "whatever floats your boat"

Posted by: MrLuckey

ok ok I'll camp at Troy (not Troy overflow though). From the sound of things the riding might not even be open by the 4th. Anyone have any updates?

I wonder if there is any chance we could get Natty and FJ to come down? <hint hint>

Posted by: thumbs

FYI -

Troy Meadows Campground WILL BE CLOSED some OF 2006 FOR CONSTRUCTION! this will not affect the Troy overflow area, but there probably won't be any water available at Troy - get water at Black Rock or Fish Creek. Check with the Kernville to see what the status is - construction has been a bit delayed.

A bit delayed! No kidding. What has it been over 2 years now? Ill check into it before we head up.

Tony, is your whole clan going? The friends that were going to go with us, the same that went to Sweetheart and keg run, are not going to be able to make it. Kim is getting a little anxious about little or no gals going like last year.

Posted by: thumbs

I'm not sure yet Chris. Julie and I might be going to Portland that weekend but we are not sure yet. I'll know more hopefully next week.

Posted by: kelsorat

Whatever happened to the days when the entire campsite was full of Dirt Riders. This blows. Maybe we should move this thread out to get some more attention.

If Nattie and Farmer John come down that's great.

Posted by: 2strok4fun

Hey what about CspineRider and CRF_Tom, I think they are up for more punishment.

Posted by: acesnkush

I am down to go... me and three friends.. Where is Kennedy meadows?? Above redrock?? How many people are going?

Posted by: kelsorat

Yeah about a 30 minutes up the 14/395 from Red Rock exit near Pearsonville head north up 9 mile road to KM.

Posted by: GETMETOCA

I would really like to go!!!! I will have to see if my limo driver (Farmer John) is up for the challenge!! It's been AGES since I camped and cooked and rode dirtbikes with peeps

Now that would be a good thing; to see you two there!

Speaking of peeps, at the last enduro 2strk4fun & I were rummaging thru the Scar-car - din't find anything we wanted, yet found a package of them yeller things all in a row together! You'd usually only see them at easter...

Yeah my wife's been trying to get someone to eat all those up.

It might just be me heading up this year, no family.

Posted by: kelsorat

Wow I might have spoke too soon. Wife and kid studied the accomodations at this Yoga camp they were planning and now are having second thoughts. You knows, maybe they are going with me.....

Posted by: 2strok4fun

That would be great Scott.

Ill prep a dinner party on the smoker, Sunday night? no cover charge for the women. Whole chicken? Turkey Breast? Pork loin? Beef ribs? Trout? or combo? Texas hold-em to follow???

Tim, Kim wants to call your wife to twist her arm. Cabernet, right? That may not be exactly what you want, but Im thinking about myself here! LOL>

Dang it, I'm out.
I will be in Oregon on vacation with the wife & kids.

Posted by: thumbs

Julie and I along with Bundy and his family are all in.

I'll bring the cards and poker chip.

Tri-tip will be on the menu.

Cool!

Ill provide meal on Sunday or we can mix & match. The smoker can hold a good amount on 2 tiers.

Posted by: MrLuckey

Well FarmerJohn won't be down, he will be in Oregon. I am most likely heading up Friday and will come back sometime Monday. If Troy doesn't have water then I'll set up over at Fish Creek.

Sounds like the entire Thumbs and Bundy crews are IN!! WooHoo

Posted by: BigSchafft

What up Tony, Ed; Ryan here.
Long time no ride!

The family and I will be rolling up Sat morn along with another family and will be staying at Troy overflow. Cant wait to see this place in person, saw some pictures on another website and it looks grrreat. Sounds like a lot of people will be up there, having not been to KM beofre I hope the overflow does not over-populate!

Posted by: MrLuckey

Very cool Ryan, it'll be good to see ya again. You and the family will love it up there. You'll be good to go with the overflow. Come find me when you get settled. Silver Toyota Tundra and black enclosed bike trailer. I'll either be in Troy or Fish Creek (not overflows).

Posted by: Kav

I ordered the crank for the YZ today, it will be here tomoarrow... Maybe I'll have a bike that runs...

(About time)

You have a bike?

either way, hope to see you up there.

Posted by: the Eel

My plans have taken shape and I'm gonna be on my own after all … Rhona can't make it. I'll probably be coming up Friday night and since I don't know the other campgrounds, I will probably camp at Fish Creek - especially since there is running water, toilets and shade. I'm planning on long rides on Saturday and Sunday during the day and hopefully jaunts at night as well. I'll leave on Monday - maybe ride a little Monday morning. See you all there !

Posted by: thumbs

Looks like Bundy will be up on Friday with the trailer and the rest of us will be heading up on Friday night after we all get off work. We will be heading home on Monday.

Posted by: the Eel

Cool. This is gonna be a good vacation ... looking forward to seeing everyone.

Posted by: MrLuckey

Tony/Eric...if either of you want me to try and save a spot for you in the campgrounds near wherever I land just let me know.

Eric - if you want to join up for food let me know. I'll be taking everything needed to cook, eat etc. if you want to pack light and eat well. Also - Troy meadows is just past Fish Creek but on the right hand side - Cant miss it.

I am thinking maybe I'll put an arrow at the Fish Creek entrance - either pointing to me at Fish or pointing up the road to Troy.

I plan to do a firewood run Friday afternoon if anyone is around and needs firewood.

Posted by: 2strok4fun

I just called the ranger station at Kernville, Troy is closed for the summer, so Fish it is. Eddie, if you can save some space for my trailer it would be much appreciated. I am planning on leaving OC on Saturday in the AM.

Firewood: I have mucho and will be bringing a fair amount. If others want to pick up some to bring up let me know ahead of time but you will have to venture to the concrete jungle of south LA (105 near 710). 2strok4fun at adelphia.net

Ill be doin some meat smokin on Sunday (hold the jokes) if we want to do some pot luck.

I have some trail plans that should be good for some adventure.

Posted by: BigSchafft

Is fish creek cg large or is it limited to the designated campsites? I assume coming up sat morning, all of the spots would be taken, but if there is room for two more trailers we would prefer to join you all at fish creek instead of troy overflow.

Posted by: GETMETOCA

Farmer John, I was bummed when I heard you weren't going to make it!

It looks like I have talked Quick Mick into coming with me to KM! He just got in from Aus this week - we are going to leave from Modesto Friday afternoon!

Posted by: kelsorat

Has anyone rode trails from Fish Creek to Kernville? If so, are the trails fun and less worn compared to the Kennedy trails?

Posted by: GETMETOCA

Okay, was there some directions somewhere? I don't remember how to get there! Thanks!

Posted by: the Eel

http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sequoia/rec...cm_ohv_map.html

Posted by: placelast

From Mo-do go south on 99, east (left) on 58, north (left) on 14 which wyes into 395; north on 395 to Nine Mile Canyon turnoff (big sign: Kennedy Meadows), turn west (left) - it's 30-40 minutes up on the Sierras from there. Fish Creek will be on the LH side; overflow on the right. You will need campfire permit for the overflow but not the regular campground. Eddie is going...

Posted by: placelast

I'll most likely be coming up Saturday, arrival will be dependend upon bike prep - a goodies order was finally shipped today from Ohio (why did it take over one week to fill? Next time elsewhere!)

May do a short afternoon loop to Rattlesnake via Mahogany in the afternoon, or Jackass; most certainly a night ride into Monache via the 4wd trail/road. I have an extra helmet light for someone, if needed; maybe two if I get an OEM mounted Friday.

Sunday morning wake up (relatively) early, all loaded up and truck in to do the loop out to Oso Meadows via Little Horse and north Beach (maybe Blackrock) and then parts of Albanita; then reload and truck to the west and do the Schaeffer to Stony Meadow and back, then around Bonita Meadow via Trout and Boone.

Leave early Monday morn.

Posted by: 2strok4fun

Hey PL-

I had the idea of doing the Bonita to Schaeffer to Stony to Rincon deal, wadda think?

Posted by: thumbs

Eddie - Bundy will be up on friday with the 5th wheel. If you can save a spot for him that would be great. We stuffed it into the 1st spot at Fishcreek last year.

I'll be bringing 2 trash can full of firewood and the cards and poker chips.

Posted by: kelsorat

I would do a hundred mile loop if I could hold the fuel

Posted by: MrLuckey

I'll try to save 3-4 spots as long as I can. In the past it usually hasn't been a big deal but with Troy being closed...I'll do my best.

Posted by: placelast

Quote:

I hear Rincon gets hot (lower elevation) and loose (dry) this time of year; other than my pre-whine-ing - we can do it. Are you thinking one-way in/back the same way? We can go as far as we care, then; sure - let's do that after the Oso warmup, if that's okay.

Posted by: placelast

Yaknow: that Bundy big-boy takes up way too much room; more than his share - there won't be any left for us small-fry tent-ies. Look: big trailer, big bike, besides being a BMF...

Posted by: GETMETOCA

Eddie, just do what you can on the spots, we appreciate it the effort!!

Okay, i'm planning some meals and looking forward to doing some camp cooking with Eddie and making some big-Azz Captains and cokes for anyone who wants to imbibe!!!! And a peach cobbler! And smores makings!!! And and , and , and......! Is it time to go yet!!!??

Posted by: MrLuckey

Well well well the cooking gauntlet has been thrown down. Actually it was thrown down, cleansed and is being used by Team (whatever Natty wants to call us). We are already drinking from it but ... It seems as though Team Bundy (and wives) and (Tony - clean guy but can't cook for damn) and their Tri-tip this, Tri-tip that....(we got nothing but Tri-tip) cooking team is going down..just like the Bundy (I got a piece of meat) teams of the past!

Let it be said and heard now - The cooking team of Natty (ok she doesn't really need a team), MrLuckey and Mick (I got vegemite, care to have some mate) Brejwo... are gearing up!

Eel will have his usual hot dogs and gourmet olives, placelast will RULE with the trailmix (I really mean that) and who knows what the BigSchaffters might come up with....Stay Tuned !!

It's on!

Posted by: GETMETOCA

Tri Tip!! Hmmmmmph!!!!! Okay, I'll have some Tri Tip because all Californians love us our Tri tip, but me and Eddie are gonna add some BAM! to the mix. A little asian-fusian ecclecticisicm, along with a healthy dose of South-O-The-Border incarnation! Our creations are gonna rock the house with "down home" and haute cuisine all at the same time. The cooks just need to be adequately quenched while we're hard at work in Hells Kitchen. I ordain Kiwi and Mick Knights of Bartending during this time. CAN YOU HANDLE IT!!!!?????

Posted by: 2strok4fun

Dang man this is sounding good.

Who will be victorious in "Campground Chef America".

Ill be doing some brined salmon on the smoker with lemon and capers in my usual enigmatic fusion style (read no style).

Placelast- I was thinking of taking the cedar canyon trail down to Rincon even if none of Rincon is done. That part where Rincon and Cedar canyon meet is 5k asl.

Posted by: placelast

We'll go over the map Sat. afternoon or evening, before the night ride to Monache Mdws. I'll also bring the Sahara gear - found a white mesh jersey, albeit with a tear.

Posted by: GETMETOCA

Quote:

That sounds so GOOD right now.

Placelast, what's this night ride you're talking about?? I'll bring my NiteRider helmet light for someone to borrow.

Posted by: placelast

We (Men With Lights; and women too!) will be venturing down to Monache Meadows Saturday night, around twilight, along the jeep trail, then back up after seeing the moon reflect on the South fork of the Kern.

I know Scar is game - others? We'd have to truck in there, offload near the Blackrock trail head, or we can do Jackass all the way in and back, although that's a bit of a challenge (did that 2/3 years ago with Herman the German and Trailjunkie, and it's a bit spooky with bigfoot around), so I propose the former jeep trail.

Posted by: GETMETOCA

Hmmmm Jackass at night. I think I had enough trouble in the daytime, wasn't that the one with all the switchbacks? Jeeptrails sound good to me!

Posted by: dirt bike dave

Who will still be up there on the 7th of July? I don't think I can get there until then.

Posted by: placelast

Doubt it, Dave, as most will have their full of trails over the prev. w/e.

Nattie: the jeeptrail would be ~6 miles 'round trip, and it is marked as the easiest on the map. But don't let that stop you is at least one spot where a high-clearance vehicle is required; most of it is relatively flat.

Chris: looks like a loop based out of Bonita Mdw, down Schaefer, Canyon and Rincon trails (north only) to the end at the Golden Trout Wilderness border and back is 50 miles; using that route, we could avoid the section of Rincon closest the main road. I'm game. Morning or afternoon? I understand your time may be limited with fam. and therefore you may not be able to do more than that, so I'll give that priority over the other aforementioned loops, which can be done later with the others who want to do more.

Posted by: kelsorat

With the exception of the night ride, exactly what are the plans for riding, or is this a Texas Hold em and cooking outing?
Who is heading out for a ride Saturday morning, afternoon, and late afternoon. What about a good old Dirt Rider group ride with Scar's helmet cam?

Posted by: the Eel

Not sure about everyone else, but I'd like to try and hit just about every motorcycle-only trail over the course of Saturday, Sunday and Monday - here's what I had in mind:

1. The ride John mentioned up the northerly shoot of the Rincon - except no trucking in - just ride out there from Fish Creek. I calculated about a 60 mile round trip using the trails he mentioned (Cedar Canyon, Schaeffer, etc) plus the trails to connect from Fish Creek (Fish -Troy connector, then the fireroad westerly, Mahogany Creek, part of Rattlesnake to Schaeffer, Cedar, Rincon North and then turn around and do it backwards).

2. A ride from Fish Creek all the way to the end of Rattlesnake and back, with the possible short side-excursion along the way - again, about 60 miles (Fish -Troy connector, then the fireroad westerly, Mahogany Creek, Rattlesnake to the end and back).

3. A spooky night ride in the northeast part of the riding area - about 30 miles (Jackass trails, Granite Broder, Blackrock Mountain, Beach or Little Horse, Beach Ridge and back to camp).

4. An excursion down Cannell Meadow trail - never been on this one and some pictures I saw look awesome. Probably would require driving in to stage somewhere closer ….

5. Any other night ride … John's sounds fun except I'd rather ride than drive !

If I did all that this weekend, I could die happy.

Posted by: KiwiBird

Damn, I'm out - have to work that weekend.

Posted by: MrLuckey

I plan to ride a few hours Friday, all day Saturday, Sunday and probably half of Monday. Hard telling whose little groups I'll join but I'm like Eric and probably won't be hauling my bike all over the place, we can just ride there!

Posted by: 2strok4fun

Ill prolly do some bike haulin to max both trail and family time. I will plan Sunday to be my big ride day with other spot options. Night rides Ill play by ear but Ill say unlikely, which will free up my nightrider helmet light for someone to use.

Now with Sunday shaping up to be the big ride day, Id like to start in the morning early enough to get 2 rides in possibly before I have to gear up for "Campground Chef America". That is unless we do the Big rides on Monday and Ill take an early Osa meadow loop on Sunday.

Again: ANYONE NEED FIREWOOD??? Contact me, now is the time.

Posted by: BigSchafft

Cant beleive its only Tuesday, long week ahead until the vaca starts.

Kiwi what up, take a floater day so you can ride!!
Looks like the Schaffters will be cooking up some carne asada, bbq chicken and yes some tri tip for the 3 nights. Not sure what 426 pilot now crf450pilot will be doing yet, but as for the rides, saturday afternoon will be ride 1 then sunday then monday should both have two rides. pack up and go home tues morn.

I got some firewood, but more is always better for fireplace jenga! 2stroke, where are you located?

Posted by: 2strok4fun

The firewood is located in South LA (Lynwood), Ill be bringing a fair amnt, but the more trucks to haul up 9mi canyon the better. Ill be fully loaded.............

No KIWI.
What about old89r???

As to firewood, I am taking my chainsaw rather than haul a bunch of heavy firewood all the way up there. There should be plenty of fallen trees etc as always - if anyone wants to borrow the chainsaw just holler.

Everyone be careful coming up 9 mile...especially if you haven't been up it before, are pulling a trailer or coming at night! For anyone that meets all three Have fun lol

Posted by: 426 Pilot

wuzzzup Tony, Yup, the 426pilot family(426 was 3 bikes ago) will be up there. Look forward to riding with you guys again. We're heading up with the Big Schafft family and leaving early Saturday morning.. with trailer in tow. Save spots if possible, but understand if they fill up. Probably won't be there until 10 or so.

I'm hoping motosport outlet will have my new IMS tank to me by then!!! Supposed to be here by Thursday. I'm ready for some nice single track!!!! Too much burnt out mx track riding the last 2 months.

-Jon

Posted by: MrLuckey

Almost forgot - for those that haven't been up there before and since Fish Creek will likely fill up quickly - there is also a Fish Creek Overflow...super close, turn right instead of left and you are within walking distance. I think it only holds about 6-8 truck/trailer combos but just pull into fish creek and find us, we'll direct you to the closest spot we can.

Silver Toyota Tundra - black enclosed bike trailer.

Posted by: GETMETOCA

One other question on the directions - Eddie mentioned there was some possibility for confusion when we get to the General Store? Anyone care to elaborate?

See you all Friday eve!

Posted by: KiwiBird

Turn left at the General Store (towards Blackrock Station). You'll immediately drop down a little hill and cross the South Fork of the Kern River and head up hill past the green gate they close in winter.

Posted by: MrLuckey

Natty you actually need to take a curve to the left (instead of going straight) before you get to the general store....any time you see the paved road curve to the left (and I think its only that one time)....look for any buildings that might resemble an old western store...if you see one - GO LEFT

NATTY Directions!! lol

Posted by: Kav

so would anyone like for me to bring up my turkey fryer for some tasty goodness one night?

Posted by: the Eel

I should be out there between 10 and 11 tonite. See you then !

Kav - sure - bring it. I don't have turkey though !

I also have 8 Guinesses in a can for you.

I'm going to Troy July 27th but I have not been there in 12 years, how long does it take from Mojave and hows 9 mile road now

Plan on 40-60 minutes from Mojave to the turn off for 9 mile depending on your driving habits and whether you are pulling a trailer, another 30-60 to Troy for the same reasons. Troy campground is closed so you'll have to pick between Fish Creek and one of the overflows. Troy overflow has running water up front now.
