Yamaha DT1 - helping out TimberFramer

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

OK, folks ... I am posting the attached photos for TimberFramer.

Y'all jump in and give him some ideas as to where to look for info on the bike and where parts might be available. This looks like a sweet little project.

According to the Yamaha Vintage Dirt Bike I.D. Guide it is a 1970 model DT1C.

A question I have ... What CC is the bike?

Tony, I'm almost certain it's a 250.

Yeah, and I'm no vintage guy but I'm pretty sure the seat is black.

Parts for DT1s are not that difficult to find. The Bay of E usually has a few being parted out and there still is a pretty good assortment of aftermarket stuff available. I rebuilt a '69 DT1 last year. Parts from '68 to '71 DT1s are compatible. In 1972 they became DT2s and 1973s were DT3s. After 1974 the designation became DT250. Few parts from a DT250 are compatible. Some parts from the DT2s and DT3s will fit, but they are not the same as the originals. What parts you use depends on your intentions. f you just want to make it run - and they are fun to ride, if not the screamers later two strokers became - then any parts from 1968 to 1973 might work. To a purist, however - of which I am not one - the later parts won't look right on the earlier models.

Some body and engine parts from the earliest RT1s also will fit, even though they were 360cc bikes, unlike the mysteriously camouflaged 250cc DT1s.....

Have fun.

That's a 1969 DT1-b. I bought one in November 1971 for $450, it was like new. Sold it 18 months later and got a 73 Kawasaki Bighorn. Got $375 for the yam and paid about $900 for the new Kaw. First bike, mom hated it. Curious how much you paid. I saw one at an AHMRA moto-x in Hollister Hills 4 years ago. They wanted $1800 for that one and it didn't have the instruments or lights. E-H
