Anyone have experience with the eTrex Vista or Legend Cx? This will be my first gps system and I plan to install it on a street-legal XR650R.

Yes, I'm using an Etrex Legend Cx. Here's a post I put on another site where a guy was asking about them:

I'm using the new Etrex Legend Cx and love it. I'm using it on my ZRX, my dirt bike (trail riding) and in my truck. On the bikes I'm using Touratech mounts ( http://www.cycoactive.com/gps/ttetrexc.html ) which are VERY sturdy and even have a lock on them so I don't have to worry about my GPS walking off without me when I'm fueling up (or when I bail off road). The mounts are rubber isolated (there are three rubber pieces about an inch long that go between the mount the GPS clamps into and the mount that attaches to the bar) - they work awesome, no vibrations at all - the screen is perfectly smooth going down the road. It also helps protect from the jouncing it takes off road. On the ZRX I had to purchase an additional piece that provides a bar for the mount to attach to and I cut the bar clamp part of a master cylinder off to mount it to - makes for a very clean install. Here are pics of mine on my ZRX and on my CR250:

The Etrex Cx uses mini SD cards and I have a 1gb SD card in mine. I have most of the eastern part of the US city and POI information loaded on it plus all of the topographic maps for the entire state of Michigan loaded in there. I received an SD-MiniSD adapter with my 1gb card and I can load my maps right onto the SD card from my laptop in a few minutes (almost 1gb worth). Here are the map areas I have loaded (the loaded maps are in pink):

It has all of the features you are looking for Johnny. It auto-routes any time you go off of the planned route. You can select routes or you can pick routes on the fly by searching for a waypoint and telling it to "Go To" that and you have the option of follow roads or off road then. It has the same compass screen your etrex has. It saves tracks and you can do that via time, distance, or auto time, or auto distance. When I'm off roading I set mine to save data points every 120 ft. Here are a couple maps off of my mapsource that I saved on a trail ride:

I'm using it in DEEP woods and very rarely do I ever lose signal. I don't think you'd ever lose signal on the road - I haven't yet. When your on a route BTW and a turn is coming up it changes the entire screen and shows you just the upcoming turn and how far away it is and then automatically goes back to the regular map when you make the turn. The distance on the map automatically changes to show you the next turn on the turn on the regular map. You can also do a "highway" view where you see what you see in front of you. I think you'd be very happy with it - I am.

All Garmins rock in my opinion ... they are all good. I have a GPSmap 76CS.

I use the Ram mounting system which is a bit cheaper than Touratech. Both are available from CycoActive.com.

They are rebating $$ on the 76Cx and 76CSx at the moment ... Mmmmmm

Being able to store weeks worth of active tracks would be a plus.

Are you guys running batteries in your Garmins or powered off the bikes?

On my dirt bike I use batteries (rechargable NiMH AA's). On my streetbike I use a power cable. The batteries last I'd guess about 12-15 hours. I wouldn't want to use it off road with the power cable because the connector for the cable is covered by a rubber boot that seals it from dust/water. If you have a power cable connected stuff could get into the case from there.

Can you only use Garmin maps with the Legend CX? I have one but haven't gotten around to getting any map software for it yet.
