Hello, I just picked up a sweet 71 ct1 175 and was wondering if you need a battery to start it. all the lights have been removed and it has kill button installed. but I get no spark???
bike has been not rode in 25 years. The 70 year old guy I bought it from had it running last summer but didnt ride it. He use to race enduros in the early 70,s. He had lots of storys of his glory days!!!! I sure want to get it going again. Thanks for any help!

A battery was not required to run a '71 CT-1. Remove the Kill Button then check it. Seems to me the 71's still had points and condensors, and there in could be your problem.

Yeah - i had a 1971 CT-1 ran it w/o a battery. It did have points.
I wish i would have held on to that bike ... when i was getting rid of it i actually had to pay a guy to take it away.

Only the AT-1 125 required the battery to run. It was a 12V system because the AT1 had electric start.

Thanks for the input, thats what I thought. I will check the points this weekend. I check for spark then went right to polishing it up nice when i first got it home.
