Aprilia SXV RXV 550 question regarding FSAE

Hi all,
It's been a long time since I've posted here, but came back because I need a question answered by one of the really smart people here.
Aprilia finally made an engine that is just about perfect for Formula SAE cars.
Does anyone know what the firing order / engine timing of the SXV / RXV 550 engine is? It's not in the owner's or service manuals.
#1 - I want to know if it's a big bang engine (1st cylinder fires, then 2nd cylinder fires 77 degrees later), or if it's an opposite firing engine (cylinders fire 360 degrees apart)?
#2 - Since it has single cams and individual cam chains, could it be configured either way by rotating one cam chain on the crank 180 degrees?
Thanks,
Dan

I assume you could twingle or untwingle it at will, I don't see a mechanical issue with it. The FI/ignition might not be very happy about it though, depending on how the computer determines tdc and correct firing.

I believe the engine has a common crank pin with both cylinders. My best guess is that it is not a big bang engine, as the sound clip I heard sounded WAY too smooth. By the way, the cylinders probably would not fire 360 degrees out due to the V configuration and common crank pin.

Besides the aforementioned FI and ignition issues I suspect that changing to big-bang would have a noticeable impact on intake and exhaust dynamics. To get optimum power you might need to redesign intake and exhaust tracts, airbox volume, and valve timing/lift/duration. Just my guess.
If you really want to undertake this project and discover that FI/ignition ECU can't be modified to suit your needs, then you may want to consider replacing it with megasquirt - a do-it-yourself ECU. Check out these links:
