Ok, the 'snowball' has now picked up some mass (http://www.cyclenews.com/ShowStory.asp?HeadlineID=11021)

So, how long do you predict before carburetors are but a footnote in M/C history. 5 years, 10, 15? What is your best guess?

We knew it was coming; it will be interesting to see how long the transformation takes. Will the government 'push' it along, or will it be consumer-driven?

IMO, there's no doubt that FI will take over on the big bikes, 250-450F's. I'm curious to see if FI ends up on the smaller and recreational bikes.

I agree with Tony, the full size mx bikes will probly all be efi by 2010, but I can't see the trail/play bikes all goin efi. The carburetor isn't just going to vanish, it's a proven reliable piece.

The nice thing with a carb is that when it goes bad, you can fix (average joe too.). But with EFI you alot of the times have to buy the whole unit, you also need to buy a Power Commander to tune your motor after you do work to it and they aren't the cheapest thing in the world. They are nice though because once you get the power commander you don't have to fiddle with the jets, you just pick a setting and go ride.

Got to go with 10 Ken. 5 for the misinformation years, and 5 for reality and knowledge to set in.

Will the Chinese follow, (or lead the way?) Will a scooter be the first 'modern' 2 stroke to be fuel injected? Will pit bikes be injected by the mfgs. first, or by the aftermarket? Will we all buy the bikes that are still carbureted because "we know how to work on them?"

Enquiring minds want to know!

It's been happening for a while now. Aprilia was doing EFI on two-stroke scooters as far back as 1999. They currently have an electronically controlled, air assisted direct injection version that is supposed to pass the tough Euro 3 standards. Pretty impressive technology.

Thanks Rich, for the info., (as usual.)

I figured that with the large scooter market worldwide, the manufacturers have continued R & D on the 2-T engines for these.

Maybe there is still hope for the 2-t!

I for one would like to see an aftermarket retro fit. If an inovator could use existing equipment but adapt it for different applications I think it would sell. The electronics is probably the easy thing but creating the fuel map and optimum oil ratio's to work with the injectors would take some serious trial and error, IMO. I really think that there is likely 2 or 3 DRN members that have the know how to pull it off, they would just need the bucks to put into R & D. Venture capital is the key and marketing the bread and butter.

Any EFI system on a production US run mx bike SHOULD be pretty good. I cant see any of the manufacturers using something they havent thouroghly tested. Sure there will be some teething issues, but there is with any new technology. I personally would like to try one. So when Honda puts EFI on the small bore CRF, I'll be taking offers on my 06

Optimum Power Technology in Pittsburgh have been offering FI (GP Control) for YZs for years now. I tried to put a link in but the spamkiller nailed me - just do a search for the company name and/or GP Control.

Power Commander or any of the Dobeck TFI tuners will be cheaper and do what the basic neophyte needs it to do.

EFI has been quads for years, I have been using the Dobeck and PC with good results.

The dirt bike EFI systems are no different than what is already on a LTR450, KFX450, DS450 etc etc etc...

Don't sewat EFI.......

Posted by: sprint4425

i think the EFI system is invevitable. On which engine, the two stroke or the four stroke is the real question.

Posted by: D36-108A

That's hardly a question. The big four have been neglecting and dropping their 2T lines, they aren't going to bring them back with injection.
