NM Dirt

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: G FORCE

I am creating this thread so that we can have a place for the locals to post up and keep everyone updated on any meets, rides, or events coming up.

Riding stories, experiences, call outs, rants and raves, and general BS is tolerated and completely encouraged!

So with that, hopefully our NM guys can meet one another and do some riding sometime!

Posted by: G FORCE

Woohoo! 1st post in thread!

Anyway, I was out at 9 mile yesterday with pops and gramps for a bit of riding. My buddy showed up to check things out a little later.

I am definetely getting the hang of this riding stuff and feeling more and more comfortable. I rode my dad's Suzuki 400 trl bike for the first time and really wasn't used to it after riding my bike. It's heavy and I don't like the 4 stroke powerband at all. Unfortunately his bike started over-heating badly, which sux cause he just bought it used a couple weeks ago from a Honda dealer. He is going to talk with the sales guy and see what they can work out on possibly a new bike!

I know Matt was thinking about going out to Montessa yesterday, how did that go man?

Posted by: aaldape

Nice, glad you guys had fun. I am anxious to get out there. Hopefully I can move stuff out of my garage and unpack so I can take care of the carbs on my bike... It is also leaking on the stator side gasket... Need to fix that too...

9 mile is the one over by I 40 right?

Oh, and Kyle was a cool guy. I was looking in the paper and found a 2002 cr125 for a good price, I wonder if that is the one he looked at also. Sounded like a good deal to me!

You got the KTM right G?

Posted by: G FORCE

Which side of town did you move to, Alan? You'll have to let us know when you are ready to ride.

9 mile is just a bit west of 98th St and north of Central. It hasn't rained over there in a couple days and I think a lot of trucks have been churning up the sand so it was really loose but still fun.

I know he didn't buy a bike last night. I think he is really wanting a YZ and might hold out for one.

Yes, I do have an '04 KTM 125SX. My dad thought his 400 was faster than my 125...after riding both I am pretty sure mine is faster.

Posted by: f1uffy

Woo hoo! A local thread! I just started riding myself. I have been out about 5 times to Montessa. So far I really like it. I think I am learning, hahaha. My advantage was riding a street bike for 7 years. Now I just need to pick up all the dirt skills. Yes, I must overcome my tendency to be a chicken too. -Geneva

Posted by: aaldape

Nice G, sand is always good practice in confidence... You really think that 125 is faster than the 400 4stroke? I haven't ridden one, but I always assumed they were animals...

I moved over to the NE side of I-40 and Coors (previously lived near UNM). If you talk to Kyle tell him my price is negotiable. I wouldn't want to rip anyone off, just trying to free up space and get that bike ridden since I have my own, and my girlfriend rides something different now...

Sounds like 9mile is pretty close then, I will definitely have to hit it up soon. I haven't been up there yet, just out to Montessa and the end of Southern. I'm hoping to move crap out of the garage tonight and work on my bike tomorrow (hopefully some gasket sealant will do the trick for the time being).

Hey f1uffy, what street bike did you have? I got an SV650 (no beast by any means, but fun as hell)...

Posted by: aaldape

And oh yea, kudos to the NM thread

Posted by: G FORCE

Hey Geneva, how do you like riding Montessa? Have your ridden anywhere else to compare it to? Girls that ride bikes are way up there on the cool scale!

Alan, I think I'M faster than he is cause that bike is 60 lbs heavier than mine plus he outweighs me by 50 lbs on top of that. But having ridden both, yes, I do think my 125 is faster with equal riders. I agree, the only thing harder than sand IMO is gravel

Dang man you are right by 9 mile, hit it up and let me know so I can go to! How is out off Southern?

Gabe

P.S: Glad you guys are diggin' the NM thread.

Posted by: aaldape

I'll have to try out a 4stroke some day just to test the waters I guess...

But yea, that 125 we have is pretty damn fast too. If you know how to ride the powerband it'll easily stay with an average rider on a 250, or even beat a crappy rider like me on a 250

Yea I am anxious to go. I am trying to get things together so I can ride a bit on Saturday, we will see... I thought southern was pretty bad ass. A lot of trails and it goes forever. Apparently if you know where you are going you can hit I 40 from back there...

Posted by: f1uffy

Hey f1uffy, what street bike did you have? I got an SV650 (no beast by any means, but fun as hell)...

I ride a Kawasaki Vulcan 500

I like Montessa fine. There are all kinds of trails and the quads generally stay away from me. I have not been any where else yet though.

Posted by: G FORCE

Saturday would be awesome if you can get your bike in order. Don't worry, I am a crappy rider still so I won't be doing any passing!

Geneva, sweet bike! Looks like this?:

Posted by: aaldape

Nice Geneva

Here's Mine

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l...ea/DSCN0470.jpg

Yea, tonight I am going to town on the carbs with a can of carb cleaner, hopefully that is good enough to not have to totally take them apart...

Posted by: f1uffy

Nice pictures guys! Mine is red and black.

Posted by: G FORCE

I bet it's quite a rush to race a street bike, Alan. Let me know if you get your bike going, we were going to head out to 9 mile this afternoon probably about 4pm. My dad just bought a new '06 model CR250R so I'm pretty jealous! If you are up to it, head out there and look for a blue extended cab GMC Sierra or give me a call 489-6362

Posted by: aaldape

Yea it is definitely a rush. Almost too much sometimes! But definitely fun!

I didn't get to my carbs last night, unfortunately (still unpacking stuff) but I plan on doing it today sometime, just to get it over with... If I get it done soon I'll give you a call though! Have fun out there if I don't make it!

Man, I bet that new cr is nice

Posted by: aaldape

Oops, posted twice...

Posted by: G FORCE

Riding was good on Saturday, but there were too many quads. All they do is race up the hill, come back down, and race again. Boring

I'd like to try the spot out by Rio Rancho sometime or maybe try Montessa again.

My dad's CR is pretty sweet! It's got crazy power though, the low and mid is sick and scared the crap out of me. It's hard to keep the front end down on that bad boy.

Hey how come Matt and VD haven't chimed in here??

Posted by: YZ165

Sorry for the delay fellas, I've been a busy little camper for the past week or so. I lost a couple weeks at work with a cast on the right arm, so that has me all backed up. Got the cast off weekend before last (with dykes! LOL!) so now I can get my work done, and get back on a bike. Rode about 5 laps last friday night out at Sandia MX.....decided to wait another week before riding again as I was quite sore after. At any rate, I'll hit you guys up when I plan on going out again. Matt

Posted by: G FORCE

Glad to hear you are on the road to recovery. If you don't mind, how did you break your arm? Riding?

Posted by: YZ165

I Broke my 5th metatarsal. It's the small bone between your pinky knuckle and wrist. I crashed in the whoops out at Sandia MX. I got a little to close to the edge of the bumps and my back end slid out resulting in a pretty good get off. I'm lucky that's the only thing I damaged! LOL! Matt

Posted by: G FORCE

Ouch! How long were you in a cast for, Matt?

Thinking of heading out to Montessa early Saturday morning. Possibly out to Southern on Sunday.

Posted by: YZ165

Three weeks. Easiest heal I've had yet. I Rode out at Sandia MX today. The hand is feeling good. Not to sore. Got a little arm pump from not riding, but that's to be expected I guess. I don't think a Southern trip is in my immediate future though. Just the whoops at Sandia were kinda nagging on me. Southern is whoop heaven...or hell, depending on which trail you pick! LOL! I'll hook up with you guys though....I let VD abuse me a couple times, why would I treat you guys any different! Matt

Posted by: aaldape

Hope you heal up quick man, sounds like you are.

I have a buddy from farmington coming into town this weekend and we planned to do some riding friday evening or saturday sometime. Maybe if I get things straight we can hook up for a while to ride it up

Posted by: YZ165

Cool, Let me know. Send me a PM...

Posted by: G FORCE

Hey Alan, do you still have your CR125 for sale? I think my buddy Kyle tried calling you about it last night.

Posted by: hunt4steve

Hey ya'll.

I live up here in Santa Fe, and do a lot of Single track technical Trail riding in the Buckman area, west of Santa Fe. We are talking tight turns, up hill with rocks, sand washes and lots of gas and brakes.

I used to live in Rio Rancho (Intel groupie) and I would ride the sand hills at the end of Southern Blvd. There is a dirt bike track out there too.

Is there any place in ABQ, or around there that has single track trails? I used to ride 9 Mile hill when I had a quad, but as someone posted, its kinda boring, especially compared to the technical single track.

If you guys are interested in single track, the Buckman area in Santa Fe has some awesome trails.

BTW, VD sold me his Yamaha WR250F. This bike has been a blast to ride. I've taken it to Moab and done some wild stuff there. I'm getting a little better now that I'm riding a bit more (more time to ride).

Posted by: aaldape

I think single track would be great practice! But since I am still working on that 250 powerband, I think that tight trails might just own the bejesus out of me if I tried. I like slightly wider trails, and really want to get into jumps a bit more so I can tackle an MX track soon.

Gabe, Yea the bike is still for sale. Still getting a few emails about it from my old ad. I don't remember if I got a call, but I was out of town for a funeral yesterday, and just have had an overall busy (busy may even be an understatement) week.

Definitely tell Kyle that if I missed his call it wasn't intentional. I can shoot him an email too if that would work for him. Or he could call and leave me a message and I would be happy to get back to him.

... Oh and my buddy is coming in Friday afternoon, and since I have killed it at work this week (go intel ) I think I will be taking off from work early to ride... I will post up tomorrow when I am more certain, cause it would be fun to meet you guys since I don't know anyone else up here who rides besides my girlfriend

Posted by: f1uffy

Posted by: YZ165

Did any of you guys see this? 3rd -place for a local New Mexico girl, and 7th overall for the season! Great job Vanessa!

http://womensmotocrossassociation.c..._Results_07.htm

Posted by: aaldape

Nice, sounds like a trooper!

Hope everyone is getting good riding in... With school and work, I haven't even had time to troubleshoot my bike ... No spark...

Posted by: G FORCE

I'll say, that's cool!

I hear ya, Alan. I haven't been out since school started, however I'd like to go this weekend sometime. Bike is still down? Did you rebuild/clean your carbs like you mentioned awhile back? Now no spark?

Posted by: hunt4steve

well, the Rekluse should be coming in today. THat will make things interesting.....

Yea, the bike is totally ready to ride now, minus the spark. Can't quite figure it out. It was intermittent, and then now it doesn't work... Spark plug is known to be good, coil is known to be good, need to check the CDI and stator pickup. I wouldn't think the stator would easily go out though, so the pickup is a possibility, although it is rather sudden...

Also, I am thinking it could be an issue with the kill switch. Damn I just wish I had time to work on it! I wanted to go riding this weekend also, might just take the 125 out instead since I haven't sold it yet

We'll see how it all goes... School + work = my hell.

Steve, what is the Rekluse???

Posted by: f1uffy

No riding 4 me either ordered hitch and may have a trailer but not yet! Yeah...Rekluse???

Posted by: YZ165

Go to search, then advanced search, type in Rekluse, then select, "search titles only" in the drop down box.

Do some reading and you'll figure it out. It's basically an automatic clutch....but there is more to it than that...

Posted by: aaldape

Rekluse. Sounds interesting. I guess I would need to feel one to be able to really understand its benefits, although it sounds pretty bad ass.

On a happy note, ITS ALIVE! Finally got some time to sit down and fix the spark issue! Goin' riding tomorrow!

Posted by: G FORCE

W00t! Glad you fixed your bike up, Alan. I went riding last Saturday at Montessa, I really like that place now. I'd like to go ride Sunday morning or next Saturday for sure, we should plan something.

Posted by: aaldape

Nice man, I would be down. I went last Sunday out to some land just north of espanola and did some trail riding, it was pretty fun, got to practice the wheelies . Also got the girlfriend out on her TTR too.

Montessa would be good, or anywhere really, sounds like fun. Sunday would probably work. We can plan it when it gets closer

Actually scratch that, got a wedding this weekend... Damn! Next weekend! Sunday will be a play it by ear day...

Posted by: YZ165

Go here, http://www.transworldmotocross.com/mx, and click on "Monday Kickstart: Freestone" Vanessa is from Edgewood,NM and rides out at Sandia MX on a regular basis....Super cool lady, and Hot to boot!

Posted by: aaldape

Wow, what a bad ass. She is hot. She's definitely a rarity.

Posted by: YZ165

And she is cool as hell! I do all her and her family's auto repairs.... Love to shoot the BS when she comes by with her Toyota!

Posted by: aaldape

Lucky guy!

You have an autoshop?

Posted by: YZ165

Yep, My shop is down on Central and San Pedro, let me know if you ever need anything...

Posted by: aaldape

Nice man, will do

Might need new pads soon in the explorer, and the check engine light, and maybe something with the alignment... With all the time I spend at work, school, and on 2 dirt bikes and a street bike, my rarely-driven explorer gets neglected...

I'll definitely have to remember you the next time I decide to take care of these things...

Posted by: aaldape

Anyone interested in a ride next weekend? I got a packed schedule this weekend (and a trackday at smri ), but next weekend I should be good!

What is the Rekluse, well....how 'bout I point you to my website, where I have plenty of pics.

The Rekluse instructions were right on the money. I even put in new Friction Plates, and they had a note in there about new Friction Plates. Simply awesome.

Posted by: hunt4steve

BTW, a buddy of mine and I are doing some riding in the Buckman area this Saturday, at 7AM. So, if anybody in the area would like to hit the trials, come out out. If you don't know where the Buckman area is, let me know. Why so early, we're trying to get an early start to the day, before it gets too hot. When you get suited up and ready to ride, its pretty much 7:15 - 7:20.

Posted by: YZ165

I'll be out at the Puerco Dunes Saturday. A few friends and I are getting together for a fun ride day. Taking out three freestyle ramps, so it should be a good show if nothing else! Come on out and ride!

Posted by: aaldape

Wish I could join you guys. Gonna be in Las Vegas watching my brother's football game and seeing the family.

That Rekluse sounds interesting. I'm curious how it feels trying to break your old habits of using the clutch...

Freestyle ramps huh? Take some pictures man! I'm definitely nowhere near ready for ramps. I am still trying to figure out smaller jumps, just don't know many good places to practice...

Posted by: YZ165

Go out to the "Shack Track", and the "Northern" tracks in Rio Rancho. Plenty of smaller stuff to learn on, and they also have some bigger stuff. If you need directions, just let me know.....Matt

Posted by: aaldape

Yeup, never heard of em... Just out to the end of Southern (more trails/hills than anything), Montessa (same thing, hills, washes), and never been to nine mile hill...

I'm guessing when you say northern, that is at the end of Northern blvd? The same as going to the end of southern? Where is the shack track?

Just need to get some confidence/body/throttle control before I decide to try huge launches...

Did someone say huge LUNCHES?????

oh, he said launches? us fat old guys dont do those well, cuz soon after that those LANDING things happen......

Dang! Go out 4 wheelin' in Colorado for a while and a 3 page NM thread gets started!
And no VD posts yet?

Hey Matt! How's things down in Duke town?

Posted by: YZ165

Everything is good man! How you been? Wes is still around, and I'm still here...Beef, however has be a thing of the past for quite some time....he'll be back though....we all come back....How is everything up in Aztec? Matt

Posted by: OnAnySunday

It's good up here!
Temps are starting to cool down now. And i'm sure youve seen the weather reports. Farmington has been broiling this summer!
So ive been doing some 4 wheeling with the Bronco, and trail putting up in Colorado lately.
Cinnimon pass, the Aspen loop, etc, just to cool off!
Thought about taking the pig down Blackbear pass, but i was told it was closed this year?
Did Wes sell the 250F??
Mebbe he got a 450? eh?

Your right too.
Beef'll be back, they always come back!

Posted by: YZ165

I think he got a 450 from Okie a couple years back....don't remember the details, but I hauled it back from Oklahoma after DirtWeek '05 for him if I remember right.....Been a while...LOL!

Posted by: VintageDirt

Hey Wally, long time no look you. I sold the 250F to a guy up in Los Alamos, he's a DRNer by the name of hunt4steve. I did have a CRF450 that I bought from the boss but I sold that a while back. I still have the vintage stuff but I'm going to get rid of most of that one of these days. My knees feel twenty years younger already. I've got a couple of street bikes that I ride a couple times a week.

Howdy Wes! Yea its been awhile.

STREET bikes?!?
Well at least its a bike. hee hee!
What did ya get?
Ive been thinking about picking up a nice KZ1000 (1980 vintage) that some guy keeps torturing me to buy.
(nice to do smoky burnouts with.....)

If the WRF was too much for the knees you could always get one of those new 150Fs. Make a backyard moto-track!
Dont give it up dude!!
Thers too much FUN to be had before the "big sleep"!!

Yup, he sold it....to me. I actually live in Santa Fe, but work in Los Alamos.

Recently I put in a Rekluse, and I did a bit of a write up on the install. Check it out on my website:

http://www.hunt4steve.com/WR250F.html

Well, I hope to get down there to ride with you guys in Rio Rancho. I used to live out on Southern Blvd, and for a very short time, I had a Yamaha YZ600. Talk about scary! I sold it pretty quickly after recognizing that I was on a quick path to destroying myself. Plus, I didn't have any riding gear to really go with the bike.

Anyhow, check out the page and let me know what you all think.

Posted by: YZ165

Had a great time exploring your site Steve....I'm sure our paths will cross someday.....

Posted by: f1uffy

My 9 year old students can't wait to teach teacher how to ride properly. I am still barely beginning. Need easy practice....hahaha

Posted by: hunt4steve

YZ165,

indeed, our paths will cross someday.

Just got back from Buckman area. Put in about 60miles of hard hitting fast single track. Got off the trails at 10AM this morning, simply an awesome start to a great Saturday. Of course, the WR250F with the Rekluse did really, really great. There were a couple of spots that I had to put it in first gear and just creep up a few slot trails. The rain erroded the trail to the point there was just a small single slot, just wide enough for the tires. Get out of the slot, and you go down, as I did a couple of times.

MAN I'm having fun!

Posted by: aaldape

Sounds like a good time!

Hey yz, how did the freestyle ramp go? Any pictures

Posted by: YZ165

Went great! But make that plural, there were three ramps, and about fiften to twenty riders out....You can see pics here.... http://hunterbattle.blogspot.com/, More pics to follow....

Posted by: aaldape

Dude... NICE!

Posted by: uh_oh

if you guys are ever in the gallup area hit me up.

Posted by: aaldape

No Gallup area for me anytime soon. Too much school and work! Barely have time to hit up Southern anymore!

And just to keep this thread alive, I had a good day of riding out at southern & northen on Friday, got to practice whoops and jumps. Anybody here good at suspension setup? I think my front forks may be too stiff for me... I good setup could help with the whoops, I suck at those... I'm getting better at jumping stuff though

Posted by: hunt4steve

Any of you guys going to this weekends event?

The New Mexico Desert Racing is having an event in Cuba, NM.

"Southwest Off Road Enterprises Inc presents the 31st Annual "Oh my God" Desert Race. November 3-4, Cuba, NM. AMA Sanctioned Event - Motorcycle ONLY race.

Here is the link to thier flyer and registration form:
http://www.nmdrc.com/omg04pics/2007/OMG07.PDF

Apparently you have to be a member of the AMA ($39), and have to pay some fees to race. I'm considering going, but I wanted to get your all's opinons on this event.

Has anybody been to this event in the past?

Thoughts?

BTW, Wes, I can't thank you enough for the great deal on the bike. Since March of this year, I've outgrown the group I've been riding with. I went from crashing over 5 times in one ride to leaving these guys in my dust. One guy, who would leave be behind all the time, stated in this last trail ride that it took everything in him to keep me in his sights. I'm riding harder and faster each time I go out. With the Rekluse, its only gotten better.

Hey no problem Steve, if you want to get into vintage motocross I can set you up with a bike too. Or if you need a cool street bike I got one for ya too.

And also, I have been to the OMG hunnert a time or two. In 02 I broke three ribs there. I had big plans for fame and glory but it didn't work out... http://www.wesbaca.com/returntoglory.html

Posted by: hunt4steve

So, are you saying it was fun, and worth doing it. Would you recommend doing it?

Man, 3 broken ribs, I hear those are pretty painful.

More bikes, I dunno. The boss is not too happy with the amount of gear I needed to get. I just picked up some Asterisk braces for $390, used ofcourse. But, they still work and I'm stoked about that. Also, I just got a helmet camera, that'll be way cool.

OK Steve I'll give it to you straight. It's worth it to race. My best memories are of racing and I never did it all that much and I never was any good at it. But there's just something about putting yourself out there and competing against like minded people. But that's just me, now that I only do the street thing I still ride like a kid...if there's someone ahead of me, I try to put them behind me. Is it smart? No. Do I really have a choice? Yes, but that would be much worse.

I gotta quit riding the Beemer on that dirt road between the Santo Domingo exit and North 14, I keep flatting my Roadtecs. See, I still wanna ride dirt.

If you decide to race the OMG the hardest part will be relaxing and just riding a good pace, finish the race, crashes slow you down more that slowing down. Dust is bad, don't race into what you can't see, definitely not worth it, but don't stop on the course either!

Posted by: hunt4steve

Well, I just officially got the news from the website (shoulda read a little more), its been cancelled. There is a write-up on the reason why:

http://www.nmdrc.com/OMG100.htm

At any rate, I was looking forward to this.

Anybody know of any other events coming up?

Posted by: aaldape

Well thats too bad man, sounds like it would have been fun to race.

How do you like those Asterisk's Steve? I'm curious about them but would hate to buy a pair and not like them much. I also heard they can lead to bone brakes in your lower leg in a bad crash...

As for any other events, let us know, could be fun to watch!

Yes, I've heard the same thing about bone breaking Asterisks. I've heard (read) the CTi2 braces are the bone breakers. I've read sooooo many reports about riders who love them, won't ride without them, gotta have, etc. At my age, being the sole bread wiener, and heavy on the throttle, I thought it would be better than 6 weeks out of work (60 % of current pay would really suck) and a messed up knee for life. I already have arthritus in both knees, and I know it will only get worse. But, I also know that my Health care provider won't really do much until its really bad. So, I'm trying to take steps to prolong that eventual surgery day. Heck, at age 35 I had both Rotator Cuffs done. My right should was really messed up; even the surgen was surprised how bad it was. He also stated it was a good thing they did my left shoulder as well, it was well on its way to a very bad state. As my Orthopedic surgen stated, I"m a "Orthopedic surgens dream", bad joints all over the place.

Yeah, it was too bad it was cancelled. Seemed like it was going to be a good time.

Wed, do you still have the Sherpa T, still riding it?

On another note, does anybody know of where there are some good tracks in the great albuquerque area. I've been out to the Rio Rancho dunes and beyond them, seems they are for just playing around. I've been to 9 mile, before they closed it. Are there any tracks that I could exercise my frequent flyer miles on? I'm not into the freestyle, those upside down loops just plain scare me. I just like to go fast and fly far.

Posted by: VintageDirt

Steve I've got a same thing but different Sherpa T, I don't ride it. When you get ready for vintage trials...

Posted by: aaldape

I'm actually still learning (I guess you are always learning) the whole dirt side of riding. I've gotten pretty comfortable, but still working on technique. I figured some of those asterisks would also help with the knees as far as support goes, I just had no basis for opinion. Let me know how you like them, I'm looking into a set as well... Nothing wrong with trying to prevent a little pain later on...

Man, maybe I shouldve been a surgeon...

Posted by: hunt4steve

will do. Mine should be in pretty soon.

Posted by: Arob4107

Its been a while since anyone has posted on here, but i think its the best place for me to ask my question. I will be moving to Cannon AFB in Clovis in a couple months and have been scowering the internet for info on places to ride near by. Im deffinately not against driving to some of the places mentioned in this thread every now and then, but its like a 3-4 hour drive for just about all of them. going through that every weekend is a little too much driving, although im deffinately going to have to check out white sands if your allowed to ride there.

so my question is if anyone may know of some good riding spots closer to Clovis? perhaps a little ways into Texas?

Im deffinately not against driving to some of the places mentioned in this thread every now and then, but its like a 3-4 hour drive for just about all of them. going through that every weekend is a little too much driving, although im deffinately going to have to check out white sands if your allowed to ride there.

so my question is if anyone may know of some good riding spots closer to Clovis? perhaps a little ways into Texas?

There is a bunch of good riding in southeastern NM.

The Lubbock Trail Riders have an active group. Rattle Danman's cage and he can fill you in.

Who do you mean by Danman? is that a user on here?
