I picked one up today, but havent had a chance to take it out yet. This is my first big bore bike. Biggest I've ever ridden was a 94 dr250.

I'm looking forward to a ride on this thing if I get some time this week. She isnt the prettiest, ubt the shocks are both good, and the engine doesnt smoke. From what I understand it has a cutting out issue sometimes when riding. I'm thinking pilot jet? I never saw it on the test ride though.

Everyone says these things are heavy, but maybe I'm use to pig bikes. my tw200 weigh in at 279lbs or so. This thing feels much easier to push around lol. I dont think my dr250 dual sport was any lighter.

City Hunter, owned a 1984 XL350 that met a nasty end and then put the motor into an XR350 frame. This was the dual carby model and while probably overkill when I look back did have a reasonable amount of go. The motor ran 28,000 kms before it required work. Rock solid reliable and if you change the oil every 1000kms or so should serve you well. Worst points, brakes (if not disc) and headlights if you ride at night.

A later model set of forks and front wheel from a CR250/500 will bolt right up to that bike. Look on fleabay for a late 80's set. Get a complete set, forks, tripleclamps, wheel & disc brake. Makes a huge difference with a disc front brake.

I had an 84 XR500R. The Earth Pig. It was a fun ol' beast, but I sold it and got a 97 XR400, which was far more nimble and just about the same power.

The big hangup I had with the 500 was the dual carb setup. A bit of a PITA to keep two of them jetted properly. Of course, the 400 had just about the worst carb setup on a modern dirt bike, so I didn't upgrade that much in the carb department. Suspension was the biggest change, as well as ergonomics.

All in all, if the price is right, go for it. It probably weighs the same as your DR250.

A BFHP IMAO. ATK made aftermarket frames for the XR engine, if you can get your hands on one of those you'll have one sweet bike.
