First, how much are they worth? Are there any particular things that I should keep an eye out for when I look at the bike? I will be using this on the street so any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

To predict a price, it would depend on the model and year of the bike. One thing you would look out for is the condition of the suspension, by now, they are usually all sagged out. If the suspension is crappy, then you can expect to fork out gobs of cash! My best advice would be to spend some considerable time looking and buy the best possible one you can, because its very easy to find yourself emptying your wallet on them! A big factor for 2 strokes is the condition of the piston and rings. If its puffing blue smoke like a chimney then they are gone or about to be gone. As for riding it on the road... its up to you, but they're not really a road bike!
Hope this helped you out!
Cheers, Mick

The big DT can be a blast to ride but it's a 33 year old bike.It wll have issues. And boy do big bore smokers shake! It's worth what you'll fork over for it.Not a classic or even that collectible. If you want it and think it's worth the cash buy it.And one more thing if you think a 400CC two stroke single will get great fuel mileage boy are you in for a surprise!

I appreciate the tips!
I would just be using it for cruising around town and going up into the trails. I dont do long trips on it...maybe going into the next town over...but thats it. I have a 73 AT3 and I love it but its just not fast enough. Its likes to cruise at 35ish mph and the speed limits are 40-45. I feel as if im beating on it if i ride it at those speeds for more than a short distance.
Would it be better if I looked at DT250s? I liked the idea of a big powerful 2 stroke and I kinda figured it wouldnt be good on gas. But how bad are they? If I ride it conservatively, what am i looking at for mpg? As far as value, Im not to concerned about how collectable it is. I just like old Yamahas. Ive had a bunch and ive never had problems. Ive just never owned any big bore enduros though.

Ah then buy it.I just didn't want you to be disappointed by reality. They are a hoot to ride .I guess you could get 35,maybe 40 MPG if ya babied it.

Fun bikes! I still have my '76(2nd year production) bought it new, now it has 7,000+ miles still on stock top end. I used it primarily for running around town. I can't remember what the mileage is though... it's been in the garage since '80!
Value... $100-$3,000! Parts bike or showroom with low mileage... it all depends!
