I got a 79 Yamaha DT250F that is really a pain to start anything I can try to fix it? and I have a problem with adjusting the carb, the air adjustment screw seems to do nothing, it moves in and out but the bike seems to only work when the screw is all the way in.

Is the gas new and fresh? Have you put in a new spark plug?
All the way in on the air screw is richening it up. Some of those old dual sport bikes had messed up stock jetting, so might be the problem. Does the plug show signs of the bike being too rich or too lean?
That being said, the most common things that make an old 2 stroke hard to start are low compression due to a worn top end, and worn out reeds. If you need new rings, a new piston or new reeds, you might have great difficulty with cold starting even if everything else is perfect.

While your looking things over, check your intake boot for cracks and other potential places for an air leak between your carb. and the cyl.(only runs with air screw all the way in) Maybe a good carb. cleanning is in order.
