2-stroke oil shelf life ?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: BP

Anyone know the approx. shelf life of two
stroke oil, this is oil still in the bottle,
not premixed. Thanks !

Sealed bottles of non-castor based oils should not have any problems sitting for long periods of time.

Thank You !

We get our seasons quota supplied in Jan and certainly have no problems. I know a guy who bought cases of Mobil 1 2 stroke premix when they pulled it several years ago and he seems o.k. He seems to have about 20 years supply cos no one will buy it off him so I'll keep you updated!

How about Benol castor oil which has been opened?

Also, what about sealed containers...when I buy it, how can I determine "expiration date" if deterioration is a problem?

Pure Castor oils like Castrol R30 had a fairly limited shelf life even in sealed bottles. I have no experience with BeNOL so I would suggest talking to Klotz about it.

I've got some OLD Golden spectro oil ...1989 maybe.. I called up the Golden spectro boys and asked them about shelf life. (I was in a tight spot and my Maxima order hadn't come in yet.) They said IF the bottle was still sealed and not open, it should be fine. If the bottle had been opened, he said to throw it away because moisture may have gotten in it. I used the oil, and it was fine. Not a problem and my bike ran the same.

As long as we are talking about 2-stroke oil.
I had a riding buddy that used Amsoil in his mid 80s YZ250 and claimed he always ran it at 100:1. I have heard some very good things about Amsoil but I find that hard to believe. Does anyone here know if that is reasonable?

On 2 stroke road racers, many people dump the gearbox oil before the race. The box will run ok for a while (15 laps?) before the heat starts to cause problems. I would imagine 100:1 premix would be o.k for slow revving medium duration runs - I wouldn't want to try it on my own engine - come to think of it why would you want to?

HIG4s, Yes, sorry, yes I was talking about 2 stroke oil.

I bought a bottle of Amsoil 100:1 synthetic two stroke oil last fall. I needed oil to go riding, and couldn't get Yamalube 2r at the last minute. The guy at the shop I bought it said he swore by it, and that it was concentrated. The bottle does say to mix it 100:1, but I didn't get a chance to try it since it snowed, and the bike went into storage.

Using less oil DOES NOT necessarrily (sp) produce more power, and in fact has been proven to produce less power under certain conditions. Oil is much cheaper than pistons and bearings. The leanest ratio I would recommend would be 40 or 50:1 and this would be on a low revving 500 with good oil.

For higher revving bikes like 125s, 32:1 should be used.

Any oil can be mixed at any ratio, and it is confusing when they have "50:1" or "100:1" on the container. All this means is that they are suggesting that their product will perform at this ratio, but I feel that you should still follow your owners manual, or at least not stray too far from it.

Hey cooko-whatever -

Me and my buds run 80:1 with full synthetic all the time in some of our bikes. Are we gonna blow them up or something? Could any bike makers specify a ratio like this, or would they be nuts?

Thanks, I don't want ta blow up my bike or nothing.

Hey Guys,
Try Maxima's website, it gives a listing of what size bikes should be ran at what ratios.

I've run AmsOil 100:1 in my old YZ 80 and my old CR125. We mixed it at just that, no problems. Ran clean and great. Later we tried mixing it 70:1, and it was way to rich, we kept fouling plugs. I haven't run that stuff for almost 2 years, otherwise I run 32:1 with Yamalube 2R.

To answer the question, I can't answer your question.

Except to say that 70 to 1 or 100 to 1 doesn't leave much room for error. No doubt some people have good luck with this, but I personally don't see the value. The small amount saved on oil is not worth the risk to parts.

On the other post, if you foul plugs at 70 to 1, you have other problems, probably jetting!

Sorry Rich, forgot the rest of the text.

I was trying to give an example of the extremes that modern oils can cope with. I saw on the Amsoil site that 100:1 is shown as a suggested mix as is some Motorex. Gearboxes will run with with minimal oil levels perfectly o.k., but within limits. I guess you could run many oils at 100:1, again within duration / stress limits. Most of the 100:1 claims seem to cover themselves by saying 'up to' 100:1.
