Fuel storage in metal tanks

Hey Rich,
I've read some threads on storing fuel in metal tanks as opposed to plastic as I assume some of that magic mojo of gasoline must be affected by air getting in. What about the raw fuel from gas stations; they have changed all the tanks in our area to fiberglass over the last 5 to 10 years? Or, is it more of a function of fiberglass vs. polyurethane? Good luck on the job hunt!

The trick to getting good gas from a station is to find a station that does a high volume of business, so that they have to re-supply the gas frequently. The metal can helps to prevent evaporation, so the more volatile components of gasoline don't simply dissapear into thin air. These components will leach right through a plastic can. This is partly why graphics come off the tank of your bike, the fuel vapors are going through the plastic tank.

Teflon and some nylon mixes won't let fuel vapors pass through them, so there is a good chance those fiberglass tanks are lined with something.

I was told that automobile plastic-fueltanks have a fluor-coating on the inside, which works as a vapor stop.
