DRN Does Cooperland.

First, the bad news. Towards the end of our day at Cooperland yesterday, Bswift crossed up and went down hard on one of the tabletops along the back side of the track. There is a succession of about 5-6 of these of varying sizes and Brian had just hit the ground when Robert and I crested the hill. I won't go into detail because it wasn't pretty at all. His left arm is broken and I'll leave it to Brian to elaborate if he wants to. Justql was able to get his truck right onto the track and we lifted Brian in and he was on his way to the hospital. Luckily he and justql both live within 50-60 miles of CL and knew right where to go. Brian was looking very good all day, too. He has really taken to the MX thing quite nicely. Here's to a speedy and trouble-free recovery for Brian. Good luck, brother.

Now, on to the good stuff: This place is just awesome! The dirt is incredible. Loamy, with mulch and incredibly fast. The track has some huge tables, but no death-defying leaps. You can shoot up the face of the tables and just squib out onto the flat (like me!) or you can go big and take the backside down, like a lot of the guys.

Got to meet several more new faces: CC_Rider, KTMKyd, OKkx'er and Rockchucker. Sorry if I forgot anyone.

The Team: NTAC caravan got there about 930, after a 5AM lift-off from the KC area. Myself, my friend Robert, CRSwade, Blue Thunder, KC Husky and redXR. Met up with Thump and tx246 right away under the best tree in the HUGE parking area. I think we had the coolest (literally) spot on the premises. Thump was just iron-manning it all day. I bet he turned 100 laps. That boy is riding with a vengeance lately, and doing very well clearing the huge tabletops. Quite impressive. Rockchucker was putting on a freestyle show for Robert's son and his friend, Cody that had them in complete awe. OK, I was quite impressed, too! I got most of it on film and will incorporate it into a new movie to be posted here in a couple hours or so. Got to meet Brownie, the owner. This guy just loves his job, and who wouldn't? I mean, come on, it's Cooperland, fer cryin out loud! The tracked was prepped to perfection, except for the incredible mud bog at one of the bottoms thanks to a swelling creek bed, and Brownie tried his best to dig that out for us. In the end, we wound up just taking the alternate line around it. I have some pics of this bog to follow shortly. And, being the savy MX'er that he is, he waited until late in the day when we were all tired to start beating up on us on the track (Like he needs any advantage over us!). This kid is F-A-S-T!

All in all, a great day of riding, even with the marathon road-tripping. Got lots of sun, and brought home lots of that red Oklahoma dirt with me. The dirt is very sandy, though, and dowsn't load up on the bikes too bad.

Alright, enough with the chit-chat. Here's some pics:

Sorry to hear about the broken arm Swifty. I hope you heal quick.

If you need someone to babysit your bike for awhile I'll be glad to offer my services

Seriously, play it safe and heal quick and well.

Ivan

That is quite the bummer for Brian. It had been such a good day for everyone. Lou clean your bike at the car wash or in the street, that okie mud makes a mess in the drive way and doesn't want to clean off the cement at all.
I'm looking forward to riding there again. I think next time I'll bring my son so, he can ride ride that cool kids track. Or is that the old guys track?

Posted by: biglou

I am not looking forward to this wash session. I think I hear the car wash calling my name today:

Sorry to hear about your bad luck, Brian. Take it easy and heal up good.

<----Can't wait!

I knew when my bike fell over in the trailer and broke ou the glass and ruined the screen it was not going to be a good day. But I continued on. When I finally arrived and eventually got unloaded and started suiting up I found my second problem. The boots that were in my gear bag were not mine they were my sons. Mine were in his gear bag back in Kansas.

I borrowed a pair of boots from VioletSP and took off towards the track. The track was great but with the GG running poorly I headed back to the trailer to work on the jetting. After a little work I took off to the woods for a look see at the trails. What trails there are are great. The rest of the trails need a little trimming. After about two miles the GG dies and will not start again. No spark!! I start pushing it back to the trailer while Lorin and TX246 head back to get a tie to pull me in. I pushed awhile and then got pulled awhile then Craig_enid and Dwreck pushed it the rest of the way.

I then was resting when Casey rides up and says, "Brian wrecked, he's hurt bad, they said call an ambulance" We really gotta work on the boys bed side manner scared me to death. I took off in the truck with everyone in the back. When we got to the back side of the track the first thing I heard was someone say he's sitting up and talking. We loaded swift up adn headed to the hospital. Swift called his wife on the way. She had ncame to Stillwater earlier in the day and actually beat us to the hospital. After they had set the arm Tswift and I headed back to Cooperland for her to get some of his stuff.

I stayed at Cooperland and took a few easy laps on the MX track on the 250.
TX246, OKKXer and I loaded swifts bikie on his trailer and headed to his house. After unloding his bike and a quick hello to Swift we make the hour trip back to Cooperland. We got back around 11:30.

The only somewhat funny thing that happened teh whole trip was during the night when out of the clear blue I am awaken by a painful sounding scream from the back of the trailer. It was AAArRRRRARRRRRRR, OHHHHHHHHHH, GODDDDDDD. OH ARRRRR. I set straight up in bed and hollared whats wrong. Thinking something had crawled through the broken window and was attacking Gene. OKKXer calmly replies :"He's got a cramp" My immediate thought how'd Don know Gene had a cramp..... They can explain that.

We slept in the next morning. I lfigured I had had enough and chose not to press my luck and loaded up and came home.

Broken window and screen, bike won't start, buddy with broken arm......It is a great place. It just wasn't a good weekend. In craig_ enid's words " you were this close to having a great weekend" As he held his fingers about an inch apart.

Sounds like it was an adventure for heartland guys. Heal up quick Swift . that just don't sound right Anyway, Looks like a fun place to ride. Looking forward to film Lou.

what can i say, but ouch! the elbow was dislocated and there is a small fracture. brownie had watered the track mid day to knock down the dust, the jump faces were ait slick. i had taken two or three laps pretty slow, not really trying to clear the jumps. the smallest table top was where the carnage took place. the back tire kicked sideways right at the top of the face. i landed front wheel high, a foot too short, crossed up, the table top was so short i didn't have time to brake check, i cantilevered oner hard and tried to roll over onto my back but caught the elbow. my forearm is very swollen and we're giving the ice maker i work out. i'll see the orthopedist tomorrow. i really am shocked, i must have done that jump 30 times with out as much as a bobble.
thanks justql, okkx'r, and tx246 for getting my stuff home. btw, the whaambalance is a white 4x4 dodge 3/4 ton extended cab with ks plates.

Glad to hear that you are in good spirits, Brian. At least you can watch that "Time To Ride" tape a few hundred times on your road to recovery! Robert had a few duct tape jokes for ya, too! When we came over the hill, and saw the bike all askew in the middle of the road, I knew something wasn't right. It took me a few minutes to realize that it was you. I didn't notice that the bike was a four-stroke. It wasn't untill I got a good look at you sitting at the base of the tree that I realized who it was. You were kicking some major booty all day long, too. Looks like that 426 and you are getting along nicely. Well, up until the point that she bit ya! I guess you can blame Jay for getting you into this MX mess, huh?! :D

Anyway, here's the movie I put together. It isn't as elaborate as the one I did last week from Wardy's, but it gets the point across of how cool this track is. Here is the link: Click!

"I think next time I'll bring my son so, he can ride ride that cool kids track. Or is that the old guys track?"
You got that one perfect! I've never enjoyed MXing, but the kiddie course was 'just right'.
We arrived Saturday morning and unloaded the bikes. My wife and daughter (VioletSP) weren't sure what to expect from the area, being mainly an MX facility.
We hit the trails and soon had a couple of miles of trail beat in enough so that it was easy to follow the path. There was alot of other trails available, but once we got a followable trail worked in, I gave up on exploring. The traction was superb, and the trail very interesting. I don't know what the owners have in mind for DW'02, but the trail stuff looks good. If they can get 7 miles or so of one-way (reversable) trail arrowed, that would keep me there for at least a couple of days. Late in the afternoon, the MX track cleared off, and OKKXer volunteered to chaperone us on the 'big track'. I don't think that track has seen either a KDX or a TTR125....
We made less than one loop and OKKXer wisely pointed us to the now deserted 'Kiddie Track'. We proceeded to spend the next hour or so having a Great Time playing like MXers. It's just a great place for those with minimal or marginal skills to practice stuff and not tear up body or bike.
My guess is my family will spend a few more days at Cooperland, prior to and during DW....
Big Lou, saw where you had your vid, so I'm trying to do the same...

sorry to hear about your injury, swift! Even more sorry than I am to hear you bought a blue thumper :whiner:

When I played back the movie, I had the music from a game running in the background, which blended perfectly! At first I thought it was dubbed in...

Cool tabletops, is it just me or is there a lot of time spent in 4th and maybe even 5th gear on this track? wow...white knuckle!

Posted by: IrishEKU

Swift, Sorry about the Arm and manny blessings on a speedy recovery!
Lou, Sweet vid! You all would eat my slow behind up!....Achoo!! All those fumes at the back of the pack!
Milk_KX250 has almost talked me into driving out to DW02 but I won't have a bike due to the fact that the Volvo isn't set up. Bein' a poor starvin' college student. But I would love the chance to meet you all and have a few bench racing sessions. I'm sure the knowledge I could gain from just talking to you guys would be worth the trip alone!

Posted by: rockchucker

Bswift - Man sorry to hear about your wreck. You were riding good out there. Get well soon dude!

What an awesome track. The jumps are perfect, steep takeoffs and steep landings. There were a few big jumps but for the most part it is a safe track. Good loam and even some mud. I can't wait to get healthy and head back up. I've got some serious making up to do!!!!!

Anyway other than being sick as a dog I had a freakin' blast. Got to meet BigLou, Okkxer, CRswade, Blue Thunder, Justql, and several other DRN folks. Talk about a cool bunch of people, very easy going and just all around nice people. It was good meeting you guys.

Time to check the video...

just a quick reply to justql's post.......................i have had cramps in my feet, my hands, my calves, my arms, my legs and more often than not ive had brain cramps of differing severity. as an aside, see big lou's big brain cramp consisting of leaving his tech 8s and gloves on our trailer and us finding them 12 hours after he has left. anywho back to the cramps...........i do solemly swear that i have never had cramps like this before. i thought someone threw some nerve gas in the camper. i had a cramp in my thigh and my hamstring at the same time. when one would tighten it would cause the other to go off. felt like i had a bushman standing over me stabing at me with a zulu spear. i couldnt bend my leg at all because it would start the whole thing over. darndest thing ive seen in the way of cramps. i hereby do apologize to any women that i made fun of in the regards to cramps. :silly:

BSwift: Sorry to hear about the arm, and thanks for being cool to me when I was parked next to you. I have some pics of you that Ill be posting tomorrow from work.

THUMP: YOU THE MAN DOG. You were especially cool to me all day. Thanks for the ride from the track to the truck to get my gas can, even if it was a 5th gear all out "ass hauling." =] 94KX250 (Shane) said, "who was that crazy guy giving you a ride with that can so fast." =]

Id like to say thanks to everyone I met for being cool. I didnt really know what to expect being the new gy and all. Everyone was cool and I cant wait for another HS outing. I didnt get to meet everyone having to leave at 2pm, but we can all catch up later. =]

I have video and pics of the day that I will be posting on my website tomorrow. the link is on my website link.

Darren AKA Milk_KX250

PS Who was riding the KTM with the headlight that wrecked on the hill climb jump to the finish line?

Added: I too had bad cramps all day and night. I was dehydrated pretty badly. I am still cramping now after a day of water and iced tea and have only gone to the bathroom once since Cooperland.

Posted by: yzeater

You never cease to [scare and] amaze us Lou. Nice video

Posted by: biglou

Milk-That was Big Chris F., aka: redxr that crashed. That is a 520exc he is riding. He also got stuck in that giant bud bog at the creek bottom first thing in the day, too. I rode through it a couple times before I realized that there was an alternate route around it. It really was scary at how much it bogged that 426 down trying to slogg through it.

Yeah, total brain fart on leaving the boots (and gloves, too, I guess) on David's trailer. I am still going to pull the trigger on some new gear, but I'd like to get the old boots back. They have served me well! (and they're M4's, el-cheapo's, not the tech 8's :D )

Posted by: _SOLO_

That's a pretty cool video Lou, are you using a digital or analog camera?

Posted by: Milk

Lou,

I have redxr on video crashing. Im making a short on it and I will post it on my site tomorrow. I also have about 70 pics and 4 videos that will be there too. Ill shoot a link here when they are up. =]

Posted by: biglou

SOLO-That is my digital still camera. I finally figured out that the Wardy's footage was shot on the lowest resolution, so I bumped it up for Cooperland. It's not great, but it is so easy to work with using Windows Movie Maker on the PC.

Posted by: KelvinKDX

Lou - As usual you come through with the vital information. Thanks for the video - fantastic. I'm envious at the MXers. Wish i could ride like that.

Did you do your now famous No-Toil demo??

BSWIFT - hope you are all healed up soon.

Can't wait until October!!

I finally got my, ahem, issues with the computer straightened out. I changed the address of the hotlink in the first post, and here it is again. This is a link to the same movie, but with POD's "Alive" as background music. Enjoy.

***VioletSP here***
This being my first time at Cooperland I was very impressed. Everything was clean and well kept and they even had indoor commodes (woohoo). The woods trails were a bit rusty but to me that made it more of a challenge and even more fun. But then again riding across the parking lot safely is a challenge for me so my opinion is anything but expert. After the big boys got on the trail it was quickly and nicely worn in, except for one spot were lorin got "stuck" and couldnt get moving again until he transfered about two inches of mud from under his tire to my face. I really liked the little MX track which i got to put around on in the evening after the heat let up a little bit. it made it easier to practice turning sharply since i didnt have to worry about eating bark if i messed up. The only thing that could have made the day better was a little wind and one less broken arm on the part of Bswift (hope your feeling better).

Posted by: Milk

I believe that is the first time I have ever heard an Oklahoman ask for more wind!!!

Posted by: Thump

Brian get better man, was a scary sight to see you laying there white as a sheet. The guy says "just prop me up next to the tree" (he is on TOUGHT SOB)

I am flat worn out. Saturday I went through 1 tank of gas too many... 3 total. That is a lot of riding in 93 degree wheather. I was not even able to ride Sunday, just hung out. Great to meet some new faces and to see some old buddies.

I will be back later with a better report... Need coffee.

Milk, the 426 hooks up great with you on the back LOL

Posted by: smb_racing

sounds like a good time guys, sorry to hear about the injury BSWIFT, get well soon.

Hopefully I can make it to dirtweek again this year :silly:

Please send Kris (Brownie) a note of appreciation for having us up there this last weekend. The kid is a one man show, maintains that place by himself, best track preperation/lay out I have ever seen. the guy works his arse off. Way to go Kris.

Please be sure to mention his nice looking Hurricane kit Yamaha, he is real proud of it. (inside joke, he'll love it)

kbmx220@msn.com

Posted by: biglou

I thought Brownie rode a Suzu.... Oh, I get it! :D

Posted by: KTMKyd

Will do! That guy worked his butt off getting the track ready, when we got there Friday night he was working till after dark trying to get that one mud trap all dried out. And he was really nice...

The track is awesome, although I only got to ride it about twice because I re-injured my shoulder on the kiddie track Sat. morning.
I crashed about 8 times on the mini track and not once on the big one, wierd stuff.

It was great to meet you guys, Thump, tx246, Biglou, hope to see you again soon!
Can't wait 'till DW, trust those of us who went, the tracks are great, and the trails are awesome, this is gonna be a blast.

Posted by: KTMKyd

Oh whoops, forgot to tell you about our wonderful experience on the way home....
About 2 miles out of Ardmore on I35 south, there was large traffic jam because the freeway is shutdown to one lane for construction. Around 7:00, after about 30 mins in this thing, the fuel pump on our Suburban goes out, so here we are on the side of the road tired and beat up, it's getting pretty hot with all the hot cars running right next to us, hardly moving. We were there until 12:30 when the tow truck finally came, my friend's parents came and picked us and the bikes up and we got home at about 10 after 4 this morning.....

The funniest thing that happened, me and my friend are sitting in the car, and he throws this little white carboard thing at me, it's folded and it's about 2 x 2 inches, it hit me in the face, and I threw it back at him, but the wind caught it and it blew out the window. This old guy flies up and gives me this look and yells "Hey! Don't throw that trash on the road!!!", I replied "Sorry, it blew out the window" and he gets real mad and yells back "JACKASS!" and takes off real fast. Me and my friend started laughing really hard, and my dad got pretty mad at the guy, lol. About 20 mins later this glassy eyed girl drives bye, and says real quiet something to the effect of "How much time will this traffic take off of my precious life?" and my friend didn't hear her well say he goes "What's that?" and she stares at him blankly and says with almost a whisper "Days or hours??", it was actually kinda scary

The only good thing was seeing all the drunk, the schizophrenics saying senseless things to us about the traffic, the people with funny looks, the old guy with a bad attitude, and all those wonderful teenage girls that would wave and scream to us while we're out sitting on our bikes on the trailer trying to cool off

Posted by: Milk

Thump,

I know it hooks up well with me on the back. That would explain me yelling in your ear that I was gonna fall off.

Posted by: DWreck

This weekend has me salivating over Dirt Week '02. Cooler weather, more days, more people to hang out with, I can't wait. I guess all of you have seen Justql and BSwifts post already. What luck, bad luck. Brian, hope the painkillers are doing their job and you heal up quick. That sweet 426 will wait for you. Casey said that maybe you crashed trying to keep up with him. Your perspective please! Craig_Enid, I enjoyed riding the woods with you, thanks for not running off and leaving me. (I know you could) Wish that everyone would have been able to ride the second day but OKKX'r and I burned a few laps and got a little better handle on the track. Don I don't know where you get your energy but you can ride forever, if we only would have had a helmet cam! I enjoyed meeting MX547, Lorin, tx246, Thump, Shane, and Milk_KX250- Cool website Milk. I know I am forgetting people, but that is what dehydration and too many turkey sandwiches will do. Look forward to next time!

Posted by: BSWIFT

Well, i don't think i'll need to many more pain killers. the bone doc said take it easy and exercise and let the pain be my measure of progress. no cast and no surgery. this was welcome news.

Yay!

How long it take you to type that message?!?!

that looks like a fun track, I can't wait...

I just got an email back from brownie. He said his pump went out on his well, but everyone's email's and positive comments about the track made it all worthwhile.

"I just spent all day replacing the pump in my well that decided
it was a good time for me to spend more money and waste a day of my time
messing with it, but hearing that people had fun makes all the trouble worth
it. "

Ya know, I paid 10 bucks to have an awesome day, and that guy worked his butt off all day. It doesn't seem fair, but I certainly appreciated every bit of work he did. Thanks again brownie. , your hard work won't go unnoticed here at DRN.

Think Swift is getting better, he's using upper case letters again.

i post about looking for somebody to ride with me to cooperland and Thump pms me and asks "when do i pick you up?" we load up early on saturday and head to the great red dirt track in the state above us. good company makes the trip go by quickly.

we get there early and find CCRider and crew already there. we unload and play a bit on the kid track which is big fun for big kids like us too. brownie soon has the track open for biz and we get to it. i have ridden only twice sinc e the dallas sx and im a bit rusty but feeling ok. i make sure that i take plenty of breaks and drink lots o water. dont want any cramps ya know. big lou and the kc crew hit town and we talk smack while we watch Thump go at it like an ant eating watermelon. Chris Berman voice here " he could go alll the wayyyyy" i know why thump rides four strokes......he doesnt want to stop to do a top end in the middle of the day!! :D

blah blah blah...........rest of my day can be found in lorin, justin, okkxr posts. except for the fact that i was pacing myself waiting for that 6oclock empty and cooler track session. i hopped on the bike and okkxr pointed out how awesome my front tire was looking.........not. flatter than a penny in a wet gutter. thump watched me change a flat. justin and my slime attempt didnt work. no saturday evening riding for me. thump did find a new type of insect repellent but ill let him tell on himself.

sunday found thump worn out. hands like hamburger and legs a twitchin just begging to cramp. we had originally planned to leave at lunch on sunday and i had just paid for sunday riding. being the DRNr that he his he told me to go for it. i got in 3 more sessions and felt like i gained a bunch on the jumps. dwreck, okkxr, and i followed each other for quite awhile. mx547 and lil 547 pulled in and i got to visit for awhile. it was getting noonish and i loaded up. Thump and i made good time till the one lane debacle north of mareitta.

nice to meet all you new to me DRN crew and the old ones too. don breakfast hit the spot. tx246 over and out!

Well when you ride at my pace it is easy to go 1hr 29min and 13sec. followed by a few too many shorter motos LOL. I am still sore!

I was glad to have the company on the ride up an back. That traffic jam would have really sucked with out someone to complain to. :D Can't wait to go back!

The land of orange and white barrels!

Posted by: kc-husky

I feel your guys pain with the road construction. Coming down from KC there must have been three areas where they were doing road work on I35. Why I don't know. There must be to much money left in the KS and Okie road bugget still for this year.

Lou
Great job on the "advertisement" for DW 02! Just got my computer to work with the video. If that doesn't make you want to get to OK as soon as possible, I don't know what will! That really hit the spot after about 10 days of 11-12 hour work days. Thanks again.

BigLou, that is a good video. Pretty cool. Rockchucker and I have a pretty good video archive as well, and are working on putting it all together for a movie. You had some good footage, but Rockchucker seemed to have slipped off the side of the bike some.
