I guess 4-wheeler riders don't NEED helmets

I wasn't sure where to put this since it's not exactly a flame, but seems to fit some of the themes in this forum. Anyway, I went to look at a used RM250 yesterday. The guy that was selling it told me that his helmet would go with the bike if I bought it because he was going to buy a 4-wheeler and wouldn't be needing a helmet... Actually, he seemed like a reasonably intellignt person and he told me he's been riding dirt bikes for over 30 years, but I don't share the same viewpoint he does concerning the necessity of helmets and ATVs.

He cant wear a beer dispensing hat with a helmet on now can he? :silly:

Posted by: IrishEKU

Actually the beer holder will be on the handle bars..........

Posted by: fatty_k

Oh right, so it has an inexhaustable supply of beer from the cooler strapped on the big steel rack up front!

Don't worry, it's a little thing we like to call natural selection

Posted by: SirThumper

Maybe you can pick up his boots too, since he will be wearing thongs. :silly:

Did you see the preview of that Crocadile hunter guy riding around on a four wheeler with his wife on the back wearing a back pack with his BABY in the back of that!!! You've got to be kidding me!!! What are they thinking.

Oh man, that's gross. A man in a thong, riding a quad. Yuck!

I guess you've never seen Wardy then huh?

Posted by: jharmon

Well, look at it this way: He may be getting rid of the 4-wheeler at a pretty cheap price, after he smashes his head on a tree and needs to learn how to eat through a straw.

I'm with you Mark. Helmets do a make a difference, just like seatbelts do.

What's there to protect?

If you don't care about yourself atleast look at the publics perspective - if your noggin' hits the ground you get whats called the tomato effect and then the public goes "honey they should be BANNED they are TO dangerous". All of a sudden we have no place to ride just because of several dumb #$%^s!!

Dont worry about the guy im sure his 6 year old will be on it most of the time!

just today, at our local city owned and dnr patrolled riding area, I saw mother, father, and (10 yr old?) child unload three brand new four wheelers. Then they were revving them up like they were preparing to ride, but none of them had even a stitch of gear on! I grabbed my helmet out of the truck, got the guy's attention, and pointed at the helmet. He came right over...I thought, oh boy, this idiot will want to fight or something.

Turns out, he was just completely clueless. I explained to him how important helmets and riding gear are, told him about my concussions WITH a helmet on, how I wouldn't be alive if it weren't for helmets. I also fibbed a little, and told him they were required. Actually, it's a grey area, the sign says they are required, but they won't ticket you for it.

Don't ask me why, but I can get a ticket if my bike isn't properly registered, but it doesn't matter if I wear a helmet or not.

Anyway, I suggested he buy helmets and gear before they came back to the area to ride again.

The best part of the whole thing, was when he asked if there were any deep woods or rugged areas where bikes didn't/couldn't go but quads could go! hahahaha, the quads have been responsible for ruining all of the tight trails by opening them up and flattening things out! The sales propaganda really worked on this guy! He was under the impression that a quad could go anywhere, but a bike had to be on a packed trail :silly:

I was in the Ozark mountains this weekend at a place called Whiterock. There was a band of quad'ers (bout 8 of em) that were heading out to the trails. Now these trails are rocky and dangerous, and it was raining all weekend so it was nice and slick.

Two of the quad'ers had gear on and helmets. The other 6 had limited gear, but not one helmet on. They also had the big cooler of beers on the back of one quad, but no thongs. ;(

Im pretty sure the law says that if you ride a quad, you must wear overalls with no shirt under it too.

we had a guy with a brand new quad and no gear approach us and say "I see y'all have all that extra equipment." We replied, It's not extra, it's only common sense......... later, he said he was pinned under his quad after rolling it over.....

by the way, I believe the thongs referred to are the ones you wear on your feet.

like thong flip flops.

Posted by: motometal

yea, the ones with the string thingy that fits in the crack between your...

... toes

Guys it was a joke, HAR HAR ya know, just easing the tension......I'll go now.

I know some responsible quad riders and ride with them at the dunes every once in a while but the other 80% of them seem to be irresponsible.

It seems once we find a good singletrack loop we like some yohan on his 4x4 out for his beer drinking ride will change as much as possible into a highway.

We've all seen it. No doubt there is a considerable problem.
I know several folks that are involved one way or another with atv's. It is one of the most popular items on the market. (seeing more atv adds lately in your favorite rag?)
It seems that the dirtbike world has picked up on the helmet thing (actually always had it) and the quad folks resist. Are they resisting because they feel that they are safer without them? Sure, you hear the argument "heck most atv accidents, the helmet wouldn't have helped".....but they don't really believe that. No...they resist becasue of peer pressure. I'm convinced of it.
They don't want to be the 'geek' that has the gear on....well heck, nobody else does, don't want to be out of place in the latest of designer sport fads.
It's more of a fasion thing than anything to them.
So, yes...natural order tends to weed out the sour, but I sure don't want to give up my rights or previleges simply because of the mistakes of the atv crowds. But that is what is happening. When the fad has died off...or legislated away, then the remaining laws and regulations will be left for us ever faithful off-roaders to bear. And it is inevitible, especially with antics like no gear riding.
Now if the masses had a different outlook on the situation...say, like we did, then I think that regulatory commitees and milk vetch plant savers of the world do not stand a chance. They have a very hard time with the few vigilent activists that are out there now.
So, I've decided to try to be pro-active and do my part.
The folks that I know who ride quads, atv's....whatever, I'm giving them my spiel on safety and the importance of good gear. Not only for the protection of the riders, but to lessen the ammo that the nay sayers need to thrash all of our riding.
It's much easier to say nothing to these folks, but hey, some of them are my friends as well. I've found that when I do speak up, they usually agree with everything and some have even commited to getting at least helmets before the conversation was over.
I didn't need to speak to a neighbor of mine, he wised up on his own....but he watches me alot.

Sadly its always the same at our riding area, the quad riders come storming into the riding area with stereos blasting, (2 quads, 8 riders taking turns while the rest drink beer) unload and are gone in 2 minutes, never taking the time to get any gear on. They are also the same ones ripping through the paved parking area 30 miles an hour with tank tops and shorts with kids on the back, bumping into each other with a mighty "YEE-HAW!!"

I thought about starting a new thread but this seems to be good for my rant.
Tuesday afternoon, I get home and head in to take a shower. I hear a ATV haul but up the poor excuse of a road that runs by my house. Mind you, I try my best to maintain the road and had just worked a section of it Monday evening. Well, I figure it is just my neighbor checking something after working on his ATV. When I get OUT of the shower, I still hear this ATV wfo thru the gears. I dressed quickly and headed towards the door. My wife comes in from outside and she is furious. As we head outside, 2 ATV's head off toward the county road, which had just been graded that day.
I got in the truck and headed down the county road hoping to find out where they went. I saw numerous places that had been used for burnout practice and doughnuts. After about 2 miles of driving, I stopped, turned the truck off and listened. No sound. Well, I turn around at the next convenient driveway and head back towards the house. Much to my surprise, there is a quad stopped in the road talking to the driver of a minitruck. As I get closer, the quad guy looks back and then takes off down the road. At first (15 yards or so), it was just a quick take off, no wheel spin, then he shifted to second and wfo! The gravel shot back and hit the front of my truck. Now he's made me mad!
Low and behold the sob went to my neighbors house, so did I! I chewed his butt for ten minutes and swore to bury him AND his quad in the nearest ditch if I even heard the motor start up. The damage to the truck will cost $200 and I likely will not recover the money but I DID have to call the Sheriff's office. The Deputy that came out had taken 40 plus complaints and was actively looking for this guy. I told him that the guy would not give me his name but the neighbor new him. The neighbor was very distressed by his friend's(buddy) attitude and actions.
The thing is, as much as I love off road riding and fourwheeling some people just make my blood boil with their total disregard for the rights of others. I told my neighbor if he heard my dozer running after dark it meant I found his buddy.

Yup, I like that idea, moron population control!

You got my vote!!

I ride both Bikes and ATV's,...always with my helmet on.

It's cr@p like that which was one of the deciding factors to stop riding quads. No matter how much gear worn and how much trash we picked up in the parking lot, we were still labeled as 4-wheelers with coolers.... our sport quads wouldn't hold a cooler!

Anyway, we've got a local privately owned riding area that is known for some crazy's. I have never been, but another member of our local forum was there a few weeks ago. Pictures are worth a thousand words!

More... and walking back to the trailhead because his "quad broke".

Luckily for all of us "natural selection" should be tossing this dolt into a threshing machine any day now.
