Whats the deal with Tapered bars?

ok with the different handle bar choices on the market today tapered bars are quite popular, anyway im debating weather to get regular 7/8" rethals or tapered bars i know the taped bars are fatter in the middle, and besides them looking cooler and not having a cross bar what are the advantages of these bars, i have been trying to figure this out for some time now and some input would be greatly apreachiated...
thanks

Supposedly the ProTapers flex a bit, so the rider doesn't tire out.. Me my self, i cant tell.. What i like about them is they are strong, i have taken some good spills and have not bent my bars.. All in all, worth the $$

I think you are talking about oversize bars that taper to 7/8, if you are just talking about the name "pro-taper" it is just a brand name. But here is the lo-down on oversized bars.

They are 1 1/8 in the middle, witch is much stronger that 7/8, and it takes a really good spill to bent these puppies, and any brand really. They taper down to 7/8 on the end to use 7/8 grips, and towards the ends are not an area where a bar will typically bend. Also like ricky said they are designed to flex, and have less vibration, withc is a plus when ridig a CR long distance.

I use tag t-2's gotta love these bars, I mushed renthal 7/8 like bending a wire, but have yet to tweak my tags, And I have had some good spills, the last one is keeping me off the bike for 2 months

The only disavantage is price because you have to replace your mounts with 1 1/8 bar mounts, but like ricky said, money WELL spent.

I wil never use renthals again...I toasted to many of 'em and last week my friend took a light spill in a corner and snapped the bar right next to the mount. I use Pro-tapers and IMO if you bend them you'll probably be getting a ride to the hospital...it takes one heck of a crash!!!

I've bent 2 sets of Pro Tapers within the last 3 months. No trips to the hospital yet! Not sure how the bike landed cause I got ejected. But they definitely are stonger; most "normal" falls will not even phase them.

Hello there guys, I hope to help shed some light on this subject for you. Yes the tapered bars are the way to go. They are very tough and also don't vibrate as much as stock bars. The reasons for this I will explain the best I can.
The bars are called tapered because of the process in which they are formed, expensive and time consuming process hence the price. But well worth the time and money. What they do is take metal stock and form it in such a way that it is thicker in certain areas like high stess areas and thinner in areas of lesser stress. Where do bars usually break? around the base, rarely on the ends. So they draw the metal so it is thicker around the clamps and thinner on the ends. And in doing this they create a bar that is not only tough to break but also has good damping effects on vibration.
Picture this, take a steel pipe that in 2 foot long by 1 inch around and a quarter inch thick. Now go wack a steel post with it, IT WILL HURT YOU AND SHAKE YOU GOOD. LOL Okay now take a tapered pipe that is 2 foot long and is 2 inches on one end and 1 inch on the other. It is half a inch thick on the 2 inch end and 1/16 inch thick on the 1 inch end. See it tapers down in size and thickness. Now go wack a steel post, IT WILL STILL HURT !!! LOL but the pipe will give some and also return to its shape. Hope that helps "AND KIDS DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME, IT WILL HURT YOU"

Good luck with your choice, hope this helps.

I bought a pair of Renthal Fatbars several months ago for about $50 bucks, in order to mount these I had to spend $80 bucks for the 7/8" to 1 1/8" adapters. I also have the stock 1 1/8" bars on my KTM. My take on these bars is... outstanding durability but the whole vibration thing is bunk. I love them though because they are durable. The only pain is when it comes to tying the bike down in the truck, the crossbar used to allow the tied down hook to not move much.

I use a set of soft straps, about 8" long or so, with my tapers. Takes care of that problem :thumb:
