Yankee Motorcycle

I friend of mine mentioned the other day that he has an old Yankee Motorcycle gathering dust in his basement. From what I can tell, these things had a very limited production run, and are essentially two Ossa250 engines grafted together. Fiberglass tank and bodywork. It was running when it was put away, but don't know if it will even turn over now. It was originally street legal, but was dirtified early on.

So do any of you vintage types know anything about this, or what it might be worth?

Thanks,

H

The Yankee 500 is, I believe, rare. As your friend said, the engine is two of the venerable OSSA 250 top ends in a common crankcase, with other OSSA odds and ends. It was made in Spain and imported by the Yankee company, which if my failing memory serves was the OSSA distributor at the time.

Years ago, Rick Sieman, the original editor of Dirt Bike Magazine, was a big fan of these bikes. He lists it in his vintage gude; you can see specs at:
www.off-road.com/dirtbike/machines/vintageguide/YankeeZ500.html

Try also
www.ossaplanet.com
They may be able to help.

I have no idea what it would be worth. But if decently restored, it would be a truly unique vintage dirt bike.

Is your friend selling this or what? What kind of condition? These are rare bikes and do have some value, but would need to know more. They're also cool although not the best choice for any serious dirt riding . . . which is why they didn't succeed in the market.

I haven't actually seen it yet, but I will soon. I'll let you know what I find.

Yankees were imported by the same guy that used to run Cemoto East (Bultaco) in Schenectady, NY. I was reading an article in a local motorcycle magazine a few months back. The guys son was killed when he was screwing around on a bike behind the shop. Evidently this really affected the guy emotionally he closed shop and walked away from the motorcycle business.

Hey Woods, cool on the Alpina! I gots a few similar bikes now, including a trail-ized '77 TY250. Has the factory trail kit, forward pegs, big seat. working lights, plated, even a luggage rack!

Been thinking about a vintage trail bike reunion ride in Taylor Park. Break it into classes/groups, and have one be trial/trailers like the Alpina, 348 Trail, TY trail, etc.

Would that get ya out here?

Leo.

Check out www.yankee500.us, my site. I'm restoring a Yankee, I owned one when they first came out in 1975, and am now finally getting one back. There is a cycle show in Albany NY right now with a fully restored mint Yankee on display, the web site has pictures.

I had a Yankee motorcycle and had fun with it. I used to race it on the ice. I had modified the motor it was very fast. I found a gentleman who is a dealer where I would get all my parts and information on it. His name is Bob Hogan at Hogans Cycle Shop 1782 Main Street, Agawam, Ma. 01001 Phone # 413-786-9170. He can help you with information and parts. Give him a call.
