Quick Tire Poll

Posted by: Thump

Dunlop, Maxxis, Michelin, Bridgestone or Perelli?

Posted by: biglou

I used to do the D756. I'm full-on Maxxis now.

Posted by: Erick82

I currently am also running D756, but have a new Maxxis IT ready to go on the back.

Posted by: Rooster

I'm experimenting with Maxxis IT and Michelin M12 right now

Posted by: Senior KX Rider

I run the 756 front and Maxxis IT on the rear right now. Looks real good.

Posted by: Senior KX Rider

I ride with a lot of guys that love the Pirellis

Posted by: Farmer John

Michelins.

Posted by: RideRed39

Michelins for sure. S12 up front, and MS2 rear.

Posted by: BigBore

I've been pretty happy with the Bridgestone M59/M402 combo. They discontinued the M59, but as long as Rocky Mountain MC still has 'em in stock, I'll keep buying them.

Posted by: Timr

I switched from Dunlops to Michelins a few years back.  I really like the performance of the s12s on the terrain that I ride.  Plus, they have cool stickers with that round fat guy on them.

Posted by: truespode

I can say this... if any of the major tire manufacturers ever decide to be a DRN sponsor I can promise you that will be the only tire manufacturer I buy from!! That goes for my bike and my vehicles.

Ivan

Posted by: RM_guy

So Ivan, where do you get "Other" tires?

Posted by: Rodzilla

IRC Vulcanduro's (decent price and good wear)

Going to try the Maxxis IT's next

Finding a tire that holds up to Colorado rocks and Moab slickrock is tough

Our sponsor Service Honda of course

Posted by: Y2Z

dunlops, these tires have been a really slow wear, love them.

Posted by: Okiewan

I really like the Dunlop 756's, they just wear WAY too fast. The Maxxis IT lasts longer, costs less. I do think the 756 is better in soft stuff though.

Posted by: Treejumper

Just went from Dunlop to Maxxis.

Posted by: BonChance13

Pirelli MT 44/32,the best that I have used.

Posted by: OnAnySunday

Have been using Pirelli MT-21's on the 500.
(because they are d.o.t. approved)
Seriously looking at Maxxis though for the 650, as i have the feeling i'm gonna be buying tires for it more often than for the 500.

Posted by: rv6junkie

Been using Michelin m12 all summer. Nice tire but expensive.. It's directional so it can't be turned so it seems even more expensive!

Just ordered a set of Maxxis IT's this evening. Going to try them out at DW.

Posted by: Papakeith

IRC M5B
great price great tire

Posted by: JPIVEY

I just switched from Dunlop 755/756 to the Maxxis ITs , I like them both and will use either.

for the poll I said Dunlop, only cuz I have more hours with them

Posted by: JuliusPleaser

I run Dunlop 756s front and rear.

Posted by: CAL

Maxxis IT front and rear.

Posted by: slo' mo

I run the Dunlop 739 on the back just cuz most everything is hardpack around here & I'm way too lazy to chage tires just to go ride someplace soft  I like the wear usage on them

Posted by: Patman

I voted for the closest speeling I could find to "Pirelli" Now if I could just find some of their darn stickers I'd be a happy camper! If I could make a second choice and it would be a VERY close second it would be Michelin.

Posted by: 490Dave

Ching Zing all the way, The front has been on the bike for like 6 yrs now and doesn't show but a bit of wear. The rear is a different story but still the Ching Zingers dont seem to chunk off as bad as the Dunlop did, plus they're cheeeap.!!

Another amazing fact, i replaced the origional sprockets last fall with OEM, the bike is an '84 490.

Posted by: Wraith

Dunlops 773 front and back.

Posted by: Humai

Bridgestone M59 front, Michelin S12 rear

Posted by: marcusgunby

Still love the 752-wont ride with much else.

Posted by: bclapham

just swapped from 756 to maxxis IT.

now here is the funny thing, the one on the yz250 has hardly worn one bit and that motor pulls like a mule, yet the same 125 tire on the rm lasted nowhere near as long. i am even debating on trying a 250 tire on the rm rim- i recon my motor will pull it, LOL but how will it effect the handling/turning?

Posted by: Ol'89r

Now, on a track with some moisture, I would go with the Dunlop. :thumb:

Posted by: Stan_Flemmings

You mean you're supposed to put new tires on? I've never had a bike long enough to need a set. The stock ones have a good 7-8 years on them.

Posted by: fremontguy

Didn't see a choice for mix and match. I like the Dunlop 755 up front and Michelin S12 in rear.

Posted by: TheGrinch

"My Dunlops were really hooking up"

Sorry, couldn't resist

I have found Dunlops to be the best for me.

Posted by: skipro3

I removed my chicken flavored, yellow bellyed, Michelin tires, painted 'em in the colors of the french flag and burned them in effigy. I replaced with Maxxis IT. They run narrow and I put the 120 fat boy on my KDX220. It has real tractor like hook up but I suspect that it will load up with mud once our rainy season gets here. So far it is wearing like iron in the rocks and moon dust of the Northern Califoria hills. (Elkins Flat). Great price too at about $42 before shipping.

Posted by: Wolf

Went from Dunlop 756 to Maxxis ITs. Rear is great, front is...uhm, its there.
I will try S12 on the front next.

Posted by: Lorin

Dunlop 755 on the front (why are they trying to quit making them).

IRC m5b on the back tire. Truly, the best all-around tires that I have found.

Posted by: Chief

I've had all the major brands on. I ride Enduro/Cross Country type terrain. The tire that has shined beyond belief (mine anyway) is the maxxis 6001 intermedeate terrain tire. As far as rocky root woods stuff, it pulls over anything. Also great on hills. It lasted a good 1/2 season riding once a week. Now I have the MaxxCross IT on and it feels like ice compared to the worn 6001. In my case it depends on what terrain I ride. If it was track I'm sure I'd have a different tire. I have another 6001 on the way. It has big lugs and is directional. I've heard a lot of great stuff about the M5B as well. The 6001 goes for about 45-50 dollars plus shipping and in my opinion is worth a lot more. Less downtime (on and off the bike). I posted on tires and everyone has their favorite. I got the 6001 because that's what the shop had in stock. If you try enough tires you'll find one that works best for you and probably stick with it. For myself I needed a tire that wore like iron and pulled through the wet stuff that usually stopped me.

Posted by: the Eel

I'm think I'm addicted to tires ... I'm in So Cal. I guess experimentation requires taking the good with the bad. I'm also on a mission to find the elusive hidden treasures of cheap tires.

The good:
IRC VE 39 front - excellent in sand, great in intermediate, good on hardpack except sometimes lets go on hardpack with loose top, low price
IRC M5B rear - amazing straight line acceleration, good in rocks, good wear, looks NASTY !!!
Pirelli MT 320 front - a little squirrelly on hard with loose top at times but good everywhere else
Maxxis C6001 rear - good acceleration, good on rocks, decent wear, low price
Kenda 257D rear - one of my favorites - amazing wear, excellent in intermediate, decent in sand, real good on hardpack, low price
IRC IX07s rear - great straightline acceleration, good everywhere except real hardpack, decent wear
IRC VE 33 rear - good all rounder, great wear, great price
Kenda Unadilla rear - good in soft and intermediate, just ok in hardpack, wear ok but not incredible, good price

The bad:
Cheng Shin 755 rear - bad everywhere, also wore badly
IRC IXo7s front - pretty bad everywhere, wear just ok
Kenda Trakmaster rear - will chunk in rocks, not real good anywhere
Kenda 257D front - just adequate everywhere
GBC Bermaster front - terrible on hardpack
Maxxis C6001 front - pretty bad everywhere
IRC VE 35 front - kinda scary on hardpack
Michelin M12 front - hardpack performance too scary for me

Posted by: Fe_princess

M-12 in the front
S-12 in the back
or liquor in the front
S-12 in the back?

Posted by: the Eel

:o

Posted by: Blue Beast

s12 front and rear, can't beat 'em

Posted by: atc3434`

756 front and rear. Wear isn't that great, but ohhh the hookup! Even with that back tire backed out almost to the complete rear of the swingarm, front end still comes up on me!

Posted by: placelast

Tried the Frenchy S12s, F/R, and like a Frenchman (misnomer?), good life and hookup but lightweight carcus and no shoulder strength to speak of - therefore ended up with pinch flats on both ends simultaneously - went back to fast-wearing Dunlop 756, then 773s, which do have shoulders to speak of.

Am willing to try Maxxis, but only if they have shoulders; which model is their soft-terrain tire?

Posted by: the Eel

I believe it 's the Surcross - labeled ST.

Posted by: yz250roost

Kenda Carlsbad, havn't had a problem yet

Posted by: 70 marlin

Dunlop 773's great hook up in sand. Wears kinda fast though.

Posted by: WoodsRider

Switched to Pirelli's this year MT-16 rear, MT-18 front. They hook up really well in New England rocks. The MT-16 will outlast the Maxxis IT. My other favorite combo is an IRC VE-33 rear, Dunlop D755 front. For snow and frozen ground it's hard to beat Trelleborg spikes. On ice it's a Kenda Ice Master in back and a Dunlop K490 up front. Both double lined and filled with Kold Kutter ice screws.

Posted by: woods_rider1

I just put on a new Pirelli MT18 HD on the front, and in this Pacific NW region, (wet roots, rocks, slime, sandy gravel etc) it works a lot better for me than the S12. With its short, soft, flexy sidewall, the S12 is not made for ANY sort of rock riding IMO. After riding them back to back in the same conditions, the difference for me was night and day. I threw the S12 far away, never to be mounted to my bike again. The S12 140 rear is a nice tire, but the front was terrible for me personally. With the pirelli, I could sail over rocky sections with out feeling like I was jack hammering cement, not so with the S12. Unless I can find something even better, my next tire will be Pirelli.

Posted by: WeInErIsH

Just got a Dunlop Intermediate for the rear, wear is excellent, alost 600km's on the bike and no sign of wear.

Posted by: jonyz

For me it just seems to be what comes on the bike. I dont seem to keep one long enough to wear them out. I really want to see what it is like though .

Posted by: HobRoff

Running Maxxis H/Ts as we have a lot of rock and hard pan around but there are times where the I/T would be preferable like at Washougal or this last weekend where I was swapping ends and high sidin much more than makes a guy happy.

Posted by: MXP1MP

I like Dunlop D755 Front and D756 Rear, will never buy another set of Michelin S12s again, they dont wear well at all, the rear chunks with little wear

Posted by: sngltrk

Currently running Bridgestone M25/M26 combo here in the MI sand. When new, great hook up, but rear rounded off really fast. Front is good in sand, but is very poor on hard pack. Past set-ups Dunlop 755/756, a little to costly for the wear. Metzeler front (can't recall the number)/Kenda Trackmaster, wanted DOT legal, both wore very well in sand, but didn't hook up the best. Will probably try Pirelli soft terrian next

Posted by: rairden

I just got done using a Bridgestone M78 (rear) for 4.5 months. Lasts well. Now I bought the Bridgestone M402 (an enhanced M78). I ride inter. terrain and that is what these tires are for.

I now have the same setup as bigbore.....M59/M402

Posted by: DahlElama

Michelin:
M12 Front
S12 Rear

Good combo for my terrain

Posted by: OutlawXR4

Was running Dunlop 756 with stocker K490 front (what a joke), switched to Michelin S12's for the stuff I ride, mostly sandy singletracks, combined with mud and rocks.

Posted by: Sandy Whoops

Dunlop K490 / K695 OEM currently. 490 handles and wears OK. 695 doesn't hook up in FL's knee deep sand and wear is rapid. Geez, you'd think a rubber band with chicklets glued to it would last in the sand (might hook up better than the 695, too).

Will change to either a Dunlop 756 front / 773 rear or 756 front / Maxxis IT rear soon. Looking for a good handling combo w/ reasonable knob life.

Posted by: HiG4s

My Husky came with Pirellis, I switched to S12s and love them.

Posted by: Chief

I have to admit the maxx-cross IT I have on now is wearing exceptionally well, But the maxxix 6001 will still be my tire of choice so far for wear and ultimate traction for the stuff I ride. I have the max-cross HT on front and it wears well, but my next choice for a front tire will be something much more aggressive such as a soft terrain tire. I don't care so much about the wear on the front.

Posted by: wibby

756 up front and IRC VE 33 on the back
The VE 33 hooks up a lot better than the 756 it replaced

If we ever get any rain I'm gonna try the M5B on the back, we'll see if the ol' KDX has enuf uummph left in it to turn one of those bad boys!

Posted by: Enduro_Nut

I swear by the Dunlop 756 front and Michelin S-12 rear. Primarly ride packed sand/rock, both wear like Levi's on my Gasser but the Vor eats them up - either way, I wouldn't change.
Just bought a new bike with 756 rear(one hour during break-in and the knob is rounded!) with Dunlop K490(??). 490 is bogus and the rear 756 ok, conditions were sandy.
The Starcross was nice if you have a 19" rear but so far no 18" , this was the only other tire I liked.

Posted by: woodsguy2000

I like the Maxxis IT that I put on my KTM. Next going to try the 773 for grins.

Enduro-nut, you back on a Vor again?

Posted by: Enduro_Nut

You betcha! Can't stay away! Hey, noticed you went to Barnwell, Muenster is closer , come on up! :thumb:

Posted by: 380EXCman

S-12 front and rear.......

Posted by: Someone

I tried a rear Maxxis last year. I found that they are more narrow than the Dunlop. Is this still true? Both tires were the same 110/90/19.

Posted by: DezDuster

Dunlop D739 front, 739 Desert AT rear.

Posted by: Tom Dixon

I run a Pirelli MT44 front and a Kenda Millville on the back. Both are really good tires.

Posted by: storytime

In the past I have always used Dunlop so I guess I had to vote that way,
but I see some of my riding buddies getting great performance and wear out of Michelin's S12's in this area so my next set wil be tubby's brand. :thumb:

Posted by: Misscr80

We used dunlop for years, but switched to the Michelin S12's on my hubby's bike two years ago, they seem to hold up/hook up quite a bit longer in the terrain we ride. I started using the Michelin starcross mini's on my bike as well, and am quite impressed with the hook up.

Posted by: Rm125 man

Normally, dunlop 756, just switched to Maxxis I/T's. One question, you guys with 250f's that are running the maxxis IT's, what sizes are you running?? My 100/90/19 seem really narrow, I thought about trying a 110 width tire.

Posted by: will pattison

where's the love for my boys from kenda? they've really cranked it up and their new stuff rocks! i've been running millvilles in intermediate to soft dirt and really like them. ridiculously durable, too.

wp.

Posted by: yo its matt!

ive tried lots of different tires , by far the longest lasting have been the michelin s12's.
they dont grip quite as good as a dunlop when new but 3 rides later they are even and 6 rides after that the michelin seams to have almost the same grip as new and a dunlop is worn smooth! but on any terrain other than mud the pirelli mt16 on the rear is unbelievable! if you ride alot of off camber stuff try one your bike will stick like a mountain goat!

Posted by: TwoStroker

S12's all the way. Bring on the mud! Built in vibration on the roads

Posted by: will pattison

i hear ya on the s12. it's a hard compound tire, so it wears well, but if you ride them hard in anything but soft dirt, i find they chunk knobs. especially on big bore strokers. not saying the kenda wouldn't do the same, but i'd stack it against the michelin in a durability test ANY day. figure in the much lower retail price, and it's a home run!

Posted by: ScottYZ250

I used to run Dunlop 755 front, but it's now discontinued. I have a Dunlop 756 up front now, but will experiment with other Dunlops too till I find one I love Had a Michelin S12 front and did not like it as much as Dunlop.

Anything intermediate terrain in the rear is fine with me...

Posted by: yamayz125

Michelin Ms2 front and S12 rear. Good tires!

Posted by: oneil

yeah i run ED660 Bridgestone

Posted by: bud

Pirelli mt44 front is still the only front tire that seems to work well everywhere for me. The 752, 755, 756, 773 fronts are the 4 worst front tires I've used, tho the 756 is the lesser evil. Rears.. several soft-intermediate work ok for me, no dunlops amongst them tho. If I had to pick one it would be the metzler mc4.

Posted by: Chief

I like the new ITALIAN tires that have been recently introduced;

BALDONIES;
Daygo in Mud
Daygo in Snow
Daygo in Sleet

and when Daygo flat Daygo
Whopp Whopp Whopp

Posted by: BlazinBoy

I have been running Michelin S12's front and rear and LOVE them. They track very well, give me great traction everywhere, and wear incredibly well for a soft terrain tire. I ride alot of enduros which have alot of pavement miles and I usually get 3 enduros plus all my trail riding/playing on 1 rear. The front I replace every 2 rear tires or so. If your in soft to intermediate terrain these tires are outstanding.

Posted by: motorhead434

Hey-doesnt Anyone Run Trelleborg's Oops I Mean Michelin's Never Mind

Posted by: Chief

No Really Motorhead, it's OK here. You can say it.

I had a set of those and I absolutely LOVED'em.

Posted by: Lissa

Pirelli MT-44 up front and either a Pirelli MT-32 or Mitas sand Tire on the rear. I stock pile that MT-44 front, have tried other front tires, but absolutely nothing bites as well as that tire does! Trellaborg makes a nice 'sand' rear tire that wears like steel in the rocks that I tried, too. I find the same tire combo thats effective in the softer terrian works equally as well in the harder, rocky terrian of the mountains, too.

Posted by: D36 RMrider

I run 756's in the winter and 739's in the summer but I keep hearing the maxxis IT is a good tire but im affraid to try it

Posted by: bclapham

dont bother, accepted, they last for a while but they make the bike feel all over the place compared to a 756

Posted by: 23jayhawk

Pirelli MT44 on the front, and I don't expect to do any more experimenting on that end. :thumb:

Have a Maxxis IT on the rear now, and so far not real impressed. The first real ride was on mostly snow covered trails, riding with a friend who had a fresh IRC on the back. Hills that he was simply motoring up without any wheelspin I would struggle with. Idling clutch in, no brakes down slightly off-camber downhills, following him, my back end would start coming around sidways while his was tracking straight. I started with about 12 psi that morning, and ended up down to around 6 psi just to be able make it up some of the hills. I rode 45 miles yesterday on trails that were in almost perfect condition, and it performed much better. But then, what tire wouldn't.

I did notice when I was mounting it that the Maxxis has incredibly stiff sidewalls. So maybe I found the one condition that they just don't work well. Perhaps it would be a great desert tire. But unless it does much better this spring, I'm not thinking another Maxxis will be in my future. Also, compared to the Pirelli MT16 I had on before, the leading edges are going away much faster.

The one area I wasn't real comfortable with the MT16 was in off-camber stuff. I will probably try either an MT32 or a Trelleborg next, hoping to find a rear tire I like as much as the MT44 on the front.

Posted by: Chief

Jayhawk,

Was your bud using the IRC M5B? It's my impression and experience that this type of tire will outperform and outlast any track type tire for offroad conditions.

Chief

Posted by: 23jayhawk

Chief, I don't remember - it might have been. Looked like an intermediate pattern.

Posted by: Chief

Jayhawk,
I had the Maxxis c6001 on, and it sounds a lot like what your friend experienced, I felt like I was getting away with murder out there. Especially when I had to start half way up hills on wet rocks and roots. Man that tire just dug in over anything. It climbed and tracked like nothing else I've used and it lasted twice as long. When it wore out I put an I.T. on and it feels like riding on ice when compared to the worn 6001. I already have another one on deck and can't wait to put it on. Don't give up on maxxis yet. They are also pretty cheap at 45-55 bucks online.
Chief

Posted by: fender92883

I've got a Bridgestone (I'm not sure which--D'OH!) on the front and a Dunlop 752 on the rear.

Posted by: aus426

I find the best combo for the hardpack trails I ride on is a Bridgestone M401 front and ED12 rear. The ED is just the most versatile tyre ive ridden on, it even stands up to street abuse without throwing knobs

Posted by: billding1

Currently running D756 and will try Maxxis next. Tried the Michelin M12 and found it to be so so on intermediate terrain but good in the soft stuff.

Posted by: the Eel

Kenda 257D rear or IRC VE33 rear. Still searching for that perfect front tire ... !

Posted by: Chief

I tend to favor the Dunlop Radial Rover. It was voted a 'Consumer Reports' best buy so I bought a set for my dodge (regular cab shortbed) which EATS TIRES ALIVE, especially on the tarred and chipped roads. I got 25,000 miles out of them which is a record. They gripped and handled well. Roadnoise was minimal.

I now put a set on a subaru outback, they are doing fine. The only situation they are beaten in is in snow. A set of 4 snow tires on an all wheel drive vehicle is like driving on dry pavement during a snow storm. Even the slush on the side of the road won't suck you up.

It's always a tradeoff though, I guess I got tired of changing the wheels twice a year.

Posted by: RMFanatic

My 5hunert has a maxis sure cross on the rear and a cheng chen hard pack on the front. I know it's a strange mix, but it works really well on the tracks I ride.

Posted by: SamMiDD

hmmm this is a interesting poll i am currently in need of a front and rear before the next raceday and i am thinking towards Dunlop 752 for front and rear.

At the moment i am running a dunlop 756 up front and a Bridgestone - intermediate - Hard compound on the rear not bad. S12's are good tires used them before infact there by far the best in the mud but the front S12 goes off and frankly it's plain scarey on hardpack!

also ran 756 on the rear as well as the front this year good tire lasted ok but think i gotta go for the 752 as it's meant to be decent in sand as well?

Maxxis are a brand i have been thinking of trying in a while like others though i'm really unsure about them.

Posted by: rohnman

I've experimented with a number of tires so far. Dunlop 752 and 756, Michelin M-12 front and S-12 rear, Kenda Trakmasters(dot). I currently have an M-12 front and a Kenda Millville rear. I've got 170 miles on this combo (NH Classic D/S this past weekend). They are working great.

Posted by: john stu

ok here goes

dunlop 752 rear wears like iron great sand traction and does well in the dirt also

irc m5b rear great traction wears great .great traction when new but seems to go away as soon as knobs round off just a little and my opinon poor hard train traction (ya i now its a soft trerrain tire but other soft terain tires seem to cross over better it still have desent traction in conditions other than soft.)

dunlop 756 rear awsome traction in corners in intermedit dirt great straight line traction (not like the 752 but close)good in the hard ok in the soft ,but wear is not the greatest but like i said it corners like its on rails so i guess you have to give up a little wear to get that good traction in the corners

i won't get into fronts right now

Posted by: MikeT

I have been using used tires, but when I have to buy new, I Like the IRC M5B for a rear in all conditions. Front seems to be Pirelli for the moment.

Posted by: DezDuster

Michelin X11 Radial Trials tire on the back...Dunlop 756 on the front. This combo cannot be beat for SouthWest desert terrain.

Posted by: KX02

I run Pirelli's, you spelled it wrong LOL! MT 32's give me really good traction.

Posted by: LukeRips

Michelin S-12's all around. I didn't realize so many people mix and match. I need a tire for soft terrain like the S12. Does Maxxis make one as good as the S-12?

Posted by: Detonator

Michelin S-12 rear, M-12 front. Rear is wearing well (rounding but not chunking) and was a tremendous improvement over the stock tire, which wasn't that worn. Is it true that these are directional tires? I was planning on flipping the rear.

125's aren't necessarily as hard on tires as some bikes, but the only advantage we have is sharp handling, so tire bite is critical. I'm not sold on the front yet...it's hard to tell if it's a suspension/body english issue or a tire issue, but the front end can get away on me sometimes on flat corners. It's in great shape, so it'll stay on there for another season, but I'd like to be able to attack corners with a little more aggressiveness. The rear end will brake slide predictably, but power slides are more difficult due to a great hookup. I'm also running a 19" rear in woods races, so sidewall might be an issue. Truthfully, I think the tires outperform my technique, so I won't blame Michelin.

Posted by: Speeed

dunlop D752st front and back .........love them. I am gonna give maxxis a go when these wear out though

Posted by: KawKX250F

I like them dunlop but with the money i have, whate ever tire i can afford usually works good for me. lol

Posted by: Rollinnolan

I have run s-12's for years but tried the perilli's this last change and been real satisfied with them.

Posted by: 91-YZ250-Chris

running a rear pirelli mt32 120/100 and a pirelli 51r on my zy250 and love them the hook up real well in all the stuff i have been in

Posted by: bobit490

here in the N.E. woods Pirelli MT16 in the rear and MT18 in front. thier a little "iffy" in mud, but on rocks/roots they grip like nothing else. and they don't loose thier grip when they wear. i sell more of this combo than any other to the "woods" guys.

Posted by: crf250r rider

i run dunlop 756 good for tracks and sand
