Endurance Computer Vulnerability/Placement?

I am in the process of hooking up an Endurance Computer to my CRF450 - mainly for woods riding. Initially I felt comfortable mounting it to the front of the handlebar clamps (as recommended), but the more I think about it I am wondering if it is going to take too many shots from trees, rocks, and from the occasional endo? Any suggestions or reassurance that it is protected well enough out in front of the handlebar?

The most protected position is behind the handlebars as shown in this photo.

I have my Watchdog mounted directly in the Yamaha GYTR foam pad for oversized bars. The pad is extra thick, so I hollowed out a cavity just big enough for the 'dog to fit in, cut an opening in the cover just big enough for the display and then taped a "window" (made from a tear off) over it for a protected view.
Result - the computer is mounted completely in foam and can be removed fairly easily.
Disadvantages -
1. I have to use a low mount stabilizer (if I ever get one)
2. Running a Yamaha pad on a different brand bike looks odd
The newest version of the Fasstco Flex bar and pad looks like it will work with this approach...
