Are you a member of the Broken Collarbone Club?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: nikki

I am guessing a broken collarbone has to be the most "popular" dirtbiking injury... so I just wanted to post a little poll to see how true it is. Amazing it only takes something like 12 lbs of pressure to break your collarbone. Red and I are both members of the "club" of course.

Posted by: Smit-Dog

I've only broken 2 bones in 39 years...

Both times it was a collarbone.

Both times it was the same side.

Both times riding dirt bikes.

20 years apart....

High up on my list of "Never want to do that again!"

Posted by: Senior KX Rider

Never a collar bone (knock on wood) but I have broken a few ribs, a bone in my hand, some fingers and my foot twice. All of my broken bones have been while riding

Posted by: biglou

Oh, right! Like I'm gonna say "No". I might as well throw myself collarbone first down a flight of stairs.

I hope I didn't curse myself

Sissies!

Posted by: Kav

I streched out my ring finger past my middle finger with a door when I was younger. As far as riding goes, I'm great at crashing but so far I haven't broken any bones.

Posted by: Rich Rohrich

Most of my broken bones came from an assortment of bicycle racing crashes.

One Collar bone, five ribs, four fingers, right hand broken twice, one concussion, one cervical compression and about 4 square feet of scar tissue.
Last time I checked there was still bits of my blood and skin clinging to the surface of the Northbrook Velodrome. :scream:

I had to start riding dirtbikes again just to stay healthy

Posted by: Timr

No Colar bone breaks yet...

2-ribs at MWSF '00

1-rib about 2 years before that in a tubing crash at the lake.

Posted by: motohead00

I didn't break the collarbone. I separated my shoulder, broke two ribs, broken hip. Several fingers and a couple of toes to go along with it.

Posted by: OKKX'er

Yep! Doesn't take much of a crash, either.

Not while riding- arm 2X, collar bone.

While riding-each leg, collar bone, ribs.
My bones are obviously faulty.

Posted by: Farmer John

left collarbone.... 3 times
right collarbone.... 2 times
& a whole bucket full of other bones broken...

All done ('cept one horse riding incident) in motorcycle related incidents.... Most were done back when I road raced.

I really love riding motorcycles......just wish I knew how.

Posted by: oldguy

Myself, the kid and Dilbert all are on the dirtbike related list.
Collarbone was one of the last bones I had not already broken so I guess it was time due in July
The kid has broken 3 arms snowboarding and collarbone MXing. He has also broken fingers riding
Dilbert broke his collarbone and 2 ribs at DW03

Posted by: pyrofreak

Right arm, both bones, in half, 2 Ti plates, 12 screws, awesome scars, and left wrist, 3 places, same time, same place, BMXing, whole lot of morephine, lots of drugged up nintendo time.

Posted by: KelvinKDX

Nikki - i voted.  Now what do i do?  Sit back and count the days until i break a collar bone?  I've broke others and my boss at work asks me everytime he sees me (which is about every three months) "so...have you or Wendy  broken your collar bone yet?"

somehow after voting i now feel cursed!!

Posted by: blackhawk468

I've never broken a bone.

Posted by: GETMETOCA

I know four of my riding friends who have broken their collar bones in the last year. Oh, wait, I counted Mick twice...

Posted by: tomahawk

I broke my collarbone riding a bicycle . Does that count.

Posted by: Tommy O.

Riding related- 1 thumb, 2 fingers, 3 ribs cracked, 1 front tooth, and most recently shattered lower half of knee and tibia (9/20/03). Nonriding- Both collarbones two different times wrestling, 3 fingers at work, and nose while waterskiing.

Posted by: Zerotact

I broke my collar bone while acting liek I knew how to ride on a motorcross track, the first time I ever met a group of fellow DRNer's. It was completely embarassing

Posted by: BunduBasher

does falling off a horse count !? - yup, broke my right collarbone going full tilt on one of the motorbikes without brakes !!!

Posted by: BEEF706

Collarbone, no, 2 ribs, both little fingers, (at the same time, no less ) left hand twice, ( 2 different bones) are we counting ligament and soft tissue damage? I have to paraphrase Farmer John, i REALLY love this MX stuff, wish I could do it. (BTW I am almost sure I'll do a callarbone this weekend now, shouldn't have voted)

Posted by: drzgod

Collar Bone, Pinky finger and left tibia all at once when I was 16. Never had a broken bone since (now 44,) knock wood. Did tear my MCL earlier this year though.

Posted by: jeffroe996

Riding related:

* Left collarbone (is now plated with 7 screws)
* Right tibia, compound (now includes zimmer tibial nail in it with 6 screws)
* Right fibula, compound
* Right foot, Head of the first metatarsal (had 4 pins to repair, but they took 'em out)
* Right hand, second, fourth and fifth metacarpals
* Couple of ribs

Not riding related:
* Right foot, fifth meta carpal...broking hiking in a park...who says motorcycles are the only dangerous thing in life?

Pictures of broken things here:

Posted by: Solid State

Dude, I bet you don't need the weather channel!!! I've got quite a list, but no compounds. I think knees are the worst but wrists are close.

Posted by: Dapper

1972 Rose Captial National Enduro about 1.5 miles out first woods section. Bike stalls on an uphill, hop of to push, foot gets caught in a rut I fall. Break and dislocate ankle also tore achilles tendon. Not a good day.

Posted by: KDXNick

Never broke it, dislocated it 4 times.
3 concussions, 1 shattered helmet,
left wrist- vaporized all carpals, shattered radius, crushed nerves; 9 hr surgury, a cadaver's carpals, lots of titanium hardware, therapy therapy therapy= good as new (God I love racing!!!)
shaved right pettella/ compound laceration, never test jetting after a new exhaust and intake by riding wheelies 1st-6th on a private road with a storm drain in the middle of it (unless you would like to see what your shin bone and knee cap look like). mmmmmmmm blood transfusions.
fingers and toes- there might be a few good ones left, i think
Getting hurt- its not if, its when, how bad, and how often.
Dont regret a second of it. Ride Forever!!!!!

No collarbones, but . . .

Broken thumb--riding on the street, and
Broken wrist--snowboarding.

Posted by: Gary B.

Yep! Right collarbone in two places, crashed in some deep sand just over two years ago. Also cracked a rib (riding), broken wrist (wrestling in high school), right thumb (ran it through a fan belt/pulley).

Posted by: jsned

Broke right collarbone 15 miles into a very good enduro. Nov 9 03. Very first thought while laying on the ground was "It could have been worse". AT that point I kinda thought this might be the end of dirtbiking. But that only lasted about 10 seconds.

The break is not what is bad about mine, What my problem is is I have a Category 3 seperation. That is when there are NO more ligaments attatched to the shoulder at all. It will never pull the bone back down so I will have the lump forever. The doc said they could try reattaching but there is a good chance it wont work. He said they will just cuttoff the last 1 inch or so of the bone so it doesnt rub on my muscles. Recovery time is very short compared to trying to reattatch.

Anybody ever had this done?

I will never quit riding, just going to slow down a little. :thumb:

Lost part of my right index finger at work, thought that would be the end of working forever but that fell thru also

Posted by: Chief

I broke both arms at the same time while riding alone. Then I had to ride home. The throttle would only return manually, which came in handy as a 'Cruise Control'.  Geez I miss those days.

at least i didnt hurt, after 2 weeks i went to the doctor to make sure i was ok and nope! so i have a figure 8 sling thing to wear for a few weeks.

Us broken collarbone people are almost at 50%!

Posted by: speedyts49

We are the type of people that go out and do things that put us in a position of breaking bones. Dirt bikes, bicycle racing, you name it and we are there!
I raced bicycles no breaks, ride a dirt bike no breaks, my wife puts some stuff in the hall and I kick a pipe sticking out the other side of the wall and YES a broken little toe.
Got to get out of the house, for safetys sake if nothing else.
Tom

Posted by: Chief

Speedy,

Sorry about your broken little toe.  Yea, toes, I darn near pee'd myself once or twice over toes. I have a video ( i filmed it myself while he prayed for death ) of a friend who busted his toe in my home and sometimes remind him of it when he's acting a little too big and mighty for his britches. Hang in there Big Guy, I'm rootin' for ya and we're all in this together.

A guy I work with will be out for 8 to 12 weeks, (I'll bet 12), because he fell down the steps attempting to carry a case of beer to the basement (if it was coors light, I guess God is is trying to tell him something, but who am I to judge?) and broke his ankle. (he suffered a moderate heart attack a few weeks back) Seems one of his kids left an empty plastic bag on the first step and the rest is. well, just picure it in your head. One more senseless alcohol related injury. If this was me I'd stay in bed for a few weeks just out of fear but that's beside the point.

So remember folks, don't put your beer in the basement. It only increases your chances of injury dramatically and you're only cheatin' yerself. Stuff some in the fridge upstairs, maybe on the backporch (weather permitting, and don't forget those neighborhood hooligans), even the garage if you must, I like to keep a few handy in the toilet tank, but never the basement,  I repeat NEVER in the basement.

Happy HotDog,

Chief

If you had asked this question about 5 weeks ago, I would've been in the never broken a bone group. But, alas, I am a member of the collarbone club. 5 titanium screws, no plate (I had a spiral fracture so a plate wouldn't fly. I've got questions about your (yalls?) collarbone fracture, but to not hijack the thread, I'll start a new one.

Posted by: TwistNShout

Yes, ma'am. I am a member of the broken collarbone club, broken fingers club, broken wrist club, and broke the leg last January.

Posted by: Casper250

Broke my wrist skiing but no bones riding. Got a concussion riding and stiches in one knee. Many scars on my elbows and arms from a couple of bad low sides.

Posted by: bbbom

Never broken anything except plastic on the bike (well maybe a few clutch levers & perches and those darn barkbusters).

I think it's because we have the beer in the basement fridge, upstairs kitchen fridge, some in the shop fridge and even some outside on the front porch now that it snowed.

No worry about hooligans, the front portch is 12' off the ground. Uncle Norm has been known to make off with some of the beer when he comes through the place after hunting but it was Rainier Light or something so we were trying to GIVE it away!

No major broken bones, UNTIL DW '03!!!   I am now a member of BBC.  Mick and I were comparing the damage at the closing ceremonies at Cooperland.

Just got the "All Clear" from the orthopedic and looking for rehab exerecises.  I did a search, but no success.

Posted by: Smit-Dog

Rehab for me was trying to hold on and steer a car with my left hand (broken side). I started at the 6 o'clock position, and gradually moved up to the 9 o'clock position, then 10, 11, 12, 1, etc. Took a while, but steering at the various wheel positions with the bad side helped strengthen the atrophied muscles and break up the scar tissue.

Another one is to stand a few feet away from a wall, extend your bad arm and touch your fingers against the wall. Start low, about waist high, and walk your fingers up the wall in front of you as high as you can stand. Keep going up and down the wall. Eventually you'll get to about head-high, then you just keep working at going higher every day.

House work seemed to make the injury worse, so be careful...

Posted by: Gary B.

My ortho advised me to keep moving my shoulder several times a day, even a day or two after the break. She was more worried about the muscles, tendons, etc. weakening and shrinking than the bone. She told me if the muscles atrophy it would take months and months to regain the movement and strength. Smit Dogs wall excercise works great, especially in the early stages. I usually did it in a hot shower. Hurt like a bi***, but felt great a few minutes later. I used to tell my wife I was playing "Teensy Weensy Spider" in the shower.

No collarbone, 2 surgeries on right shoulder, dislocated left shoulder in July, 2 brain concussions, 3 broken fingers, several lower back injuries(not bad enough for surgery), and dislocated ribs. All motorcycle related except for the left shoulder, that was due to standing in a metal chair with slick sole shoes trying to change a bulb in the security light in the dark, high sided me big time.
My neighbor, he raced Top Fuel Harley's, crashed in Denver in 01', broke all his fingers, broke 6 ribs, ACL damage to both knees(kneecaps almost ground off) and broke his ankle. Estimating he hit the ground about 170 mph.
Patrick

Posted by: Sawblade

Lets see. Left collarbone, three times in the same place. I've got one heck of a calcium deposit. Two fingers on my left hand. Bruised ribs and left lung the first time I broke my collarbone. Partially dislocated right shoulder two many times to count. It sucks seating on the side of the track watching the moto your in waiting for the muscles to relax so the shoulder goes back in. Complete dislocated shoulder twice. Once riding and once swimming. Two bad concussions, the second one I only know what happened from what my wife and racing buddies have total me. Its weird losing about 8 hours and not really remembering anything. Amongst all of this I also cracked three different helmets. The last one was this year, but no broken bones, just a knee that looked like it was hit by shrapnel.

Posted by: RAHRAH

Thankfully Im not a member. I did find some wood to beat on though.
I broke 4 vertebrae in my neck and 3 in my back on the street drag racing. The dodge vans frame got a zx9 welded to it with nos. havent been 150 on two wheels since.
I did brake a few ribs crossing 3 trees when I only saw one. If it were 2 I wouldve just crashed and not had a tree to break my ribs on!!!

Posted by: RAHRAH

brokn bones suk for the rest off your frigin life.
Its 230 in da mownin and Im sore as your thumb or anything else that can be from workn and tha weatr and have too gooo ridin at 630
tha soreness of life blow so bad that theres tornados forming outside though its not near as bad as if it happened while ridding

Lets just pray that we wil get to ride forever cus sooner or later Ive got to catch somebody.

Posted by: Creeper9

1 left collarbone with 9 pins and a plate.
1 left foot with three broken toes
4 left side ribs
1 right side wrist. Sheared the radius and ulna in half down near the wrist.
I have the unfortunate talent of removing myself from motorcycle seats at high rates of speed.

I think KTM Mike has the record as far as I know. Maybe he'll see this thread. He's had something like 21 or so broken bones. :scream:

Posted by: ColoradoRay

Never broken any bones dirt riding, but did break C4-C6 in a street accident many years ago.

Have not broken my collar bone yet, but suffered though major helmet cracking concussion, But my son just broke his yesterday

Posted by: Pantaz

I clicked "Yes, but not related to riding".
It happened about 25 years ago. I came up a small hill/jump on my '75 XL350, and got T-Boned by a VW.

Posted by: Mike_Ogren

Just broke my collarbone on Sunday, should I wear one of those figure 8's or just let it heal on it's own??

Posted by: Gary B.

Mike-
I think it depends on the break. I wore a figure 8 and I'm convinced it helped. There is others however that went without it. What does your doc suggest?

Posted by: MXGirl230

No broken bones, yet...
-Severely sprained right wrist several times...(rollerblading the first half a dozen times, and one time snowboarding)
-3 Concussions, 1 riding, the other two at work within a week of each other
-Torn Meniscus, from small streetbike accident in Sep. '03

Posted by: MXGirl230

Forgot to mention that the 3rd concussion was the worst. I still can't remember it on my own. I had minor brain damage, and spent a few weeks going to therapy sessions. I still get dizzy and lightheaded every now and then.

Posted by: Green Horn

No broken bones as of now. :thumb: Then again when you never ride you never break bones.

Posted by: Jarda

Hi all (and good healing of course:-)
I checked 'No broken' and it's true, BUT i got LUXATION on outer side of right collar bone. My question is - how long takes
recovery? when I will be able to ride MX from surgical operation?
Thnx Jarda

Broke my colar bone while trying to hydroplane across a creek on a....quad! That was two weeks before starting high school. Talk about embarassing...first year at the high school, and I'm wearing this figure 8 brace...yeah, that was cool.

Cut my finger off loading my bike. Grabbed the bottom of the fork leg and lifted. Apparently my ring finger was dangling in the slot in the brake rotor. The bike rolled forward and SNIP, there went my finger! A few stitches later, and my finger was back on.

Broke my finger at my only attempt at Arenacross (same finger that I cut off). Got tangled with a guy on the start straight and went down. I finished the heat and noticed in the pits that my finger was HUGE. Went home and cut my wedding band off with wire cutters... Still can't wear my wedding band, because of my knuckle.

hmmmm some nice war stories here. I havent broken a collar bone touch wood. Probly my worst stack was 2 years ago a 4th gear cartwheel on my WR resulting in 1 broken Left humerous (the bit from your shoulder to your elbow) which broke the ball off the top which is your shoulder joint. I also dislocated it when it was broken and dislocated my right shoulder too. and no it was the humerous but it was nooooot funny!!!!

about 6 months before that i broke my right wrist on my bike. A bad run but not too bad im in the same boat as cal about 18 years of riding and im 24. apart from ribs, fingers and toes thats all i have broken on a bike.

broke 2 arms in the playgrounds at school!!!!

Posted by: YZ165

My parents never let me ride as a kid, "It's to dangerous!", They bought me safe toys like BMX bikes and skateboards. Needless to say I got hurt more on those than I ever have riding.

Posted by: KAY DEE EXER

Broke left clavical body boarding 1996, 6 bones in left foot riding (crashing) 2000, 3 bones in right foot riding 2001, broke both wrists and right clavical 2004 (still healing) and virtually every finger playing basketball and doing karate for over 10 yrs. And yes I CAN say ACCIDENT PRONED !!!! Thats not to mention several concussions. Bottom line YES I have broken both collarbones and it sucks A$$. The worst part is the brace you have to wear and loss of saddle time. The right collar bone I broke while wearing brand new armour and I didnt want to cut the armstrap to get it off either. VERY PAINFUL.

Posted by: whatAride

broke mine 8 weeks ago not riding, car accident and i have a 1/2 inch overlap with a bit of a gap between the two bones. I have good range off motion and will be starting streanght exercises this week. just wondering how long will it take to fully heal? Also the top bone at the end is very visable, its becoming a bump. Will this get smaller and how long will this process take?. My doc says collerbones remodles after it heals but he did not give me time table. I also wanna know if my shoulders will be even cus at the moment the injured shoulder is a bit lower then the other? I heard it all comes back in its right place after biulding the muscles in the shoulder.

Posted by: High Lord Gomer

I've never even crashed my motorcross bike. It did fall of the stand once and I strained myself a little picking it back up, though.

I guess if the rest of you were better riders, you wouldn't get hurt, either.

Posted by: High Lord Gomer

I do have a "friend" that we got a picture of 5 1/2 weeks after he broke his collarbone (and a couple ribs): http://20-20racing.com/Gomer/gomerjump2.jpg

Posted by: 1966mustang

Ive busted open my lip 10 stitches chin 19 stitches broke two fingers, a wrist, 1 concussion, and 1 broke ankle and im only 15 lol. but i think evel kneivel has us all beat

Posted by: Domenic

Broke mine six weeks ago, go to the ortho on the 22nd. Not very optimistic, but plan on riding next weekend. At least I'm not alone, and yes riding is worth the pain, but not the down time. Peace and heal quickly

Posted by: D@Z MX

i broke my shoulder last weekend but i dunno wether thats my collare bone???

Posted by: D@Z MX

high lord gommer that jump looks mad, very mad

Posted by: Domenic

How long should you wait before riding again? The Doc says 6 months, I say 8 weeks. Is it too soon?

Posted by: Kx Steve H

I say the doc can probably give you better advice for your specific situation than a bunch of wierdos posting to a website in the middle of the night wearing just their underwear and eating Cheetos.

(Am I sharing a little too much here?)

You're wearing underwear?

Suffering though my first dislocated shoulder. Took a nasty spill on a trail 10 miles from the truck and had to ride back in with it. That was no fun.

Posted by: Speeed

I broke my left collar bone on Jun 22 01 on a 30ft table top. the lip of the jump was rutted and I wasn't squarely in a rut when I left the face of the jump. it kicked the rear tire to the side and the rest is history.
it was a pretty good get off but not to point I thought I broke something. then I tried to picked up my bike and felt stuff moving around in my shoulder that wasn't supposed to be moving. worst part is, I knew the second I left the jump that it was a doomed flight. I was not in pain at all, infact I took very very little of the pain meds that the doc gave me. but here I sit 3 years later and my shoulder is not like it was before I broke it.
shortly before I broke it I was reading an article in MXaction that said there are 2 types of riders "those that have broken their collar bone and those that will" I was like yea,right......... not me.

Posted by: Domenic

When the doctor clears you to ride. The doc told me six months, started riding at 8 weeks (easy). Will be at least a month more to get back to speed.

Posted by: oates

havent broken my collarbone but have broken most of the bones in my right wrist.

Posted by: automudracer

total bones, left wrist 2 times, right 7, total of 8 broken fingers and every bone in right hand, left pinkie finger dislocated, 6 broken ribs, both collar bones, dislocated right shoulder, torn left rotator cuff, 9 concutions, broken nose, fractured jaw, 7 broken toes, every bone in both feet, both ankels broken left once right 2 times, 3 screws in left ankel, broken tib, fib, knee cap, crushed femer, titainiam plate from the left side of my knee to the right and down to 3 inches above my right ankel 14 screws, all on dirt bike racing or jumping all the damage to the legs happened in the last 8 months racing arenacross. god i love this sport.

Posted by: kstout4life

While i was in the hospital with a broken collar bone, the first thing the nurse asked me was if i was riding a dirt bike. She said its the most common broken bone, and mainly is from crashes on dirtbikes or atvs.

Posted by: sbohanon

just broke my right collarbone last sunday. hit some 5" diameter roots wfo. i never seen the ground come at you so fast. head hit pretty hard too. never want to do that again. next race is 9/5 and 9/12, going to miss them i guess.

Posted by: relax!!!

YA YA YA I Voted! now please I don't want to be in yalls collar club

Posted by: gnarlykaw

Ok, i'm cleared from the doc. roughly eight weeks before I rode again, and ten till I was cleared from the doc. My first broken bone, and I got a feeling it wontg be my last! it gets achey when it's cold, butotherwise, all my movement is fine.

Posted by: MikeT

I went riding on Thursday night FINALLY!

The only problem I had (other than the poor lights on the track) was the new lump on my collarbone. The lump rubs my chest protector BAD. A buddy of mine lent me his newer chest protector which has kind of a hinge around the collarbone area so that might help. I am also thinking of putting some padding on the underside of the protector to keep it off of the lump. I am a little bummed about the lump but there really isn't much I can do.

I actually think the doc put the two bone ends back together a little crooked. Not sure what to do about that. Anyone have any ideas?

Posted by: Gary B.

My lump, as I believe most, will diminish with time. Mine has gone down considerably in 3 1/2 years.

Posted by: MikeT

I do know from looking at the x-rays that there is a good amount of calous (new pre-bone stuff) over the whole area. I can see the original bone and the new bone. The clip has some thickness also and I know that will be there.

Posted by: muddindirtbiker116

im new to the forum,
but i broke my collar bone a week ago last sunday.....and it was while riding.
it was the first bone i have ever broke in my body....knock on wood....

Posted by: BradFrost

I've only ever busted one thing... the third toe on my right foot which now looks like a claw. I deserved it coz I was very young/stoopid and riding an indian file track with only gym shoes on. A hidden tree stump on the side of the track lept outta the tall grass and spoilt my ride in an instant.
I now wear my Tech8's to bed.

Posted by: xsnrg

Broke my collar bone in a sled riding accident at the age of 4. I was at the bottom of the hill, still laying down on my sled when a 6' wooden toboggan (not the kind you wear on your head) loaded with 4 people on it ran over me at full tilt.

Broke my nose when my brother punched it.

Broke my shifter foot in an XR100 accident in grade school. That was an interesting ride back to the house reaching down to shift with my hand.

Broke pinky finger riding this past summer. Stupid accident... about 5 mph in a water hole, my front tire suddenly slipped to the right about 2' due to a rut I could not see under the water and I went down. Tip: Don't assume that a throbbing finger is just a 'bad jam' that you can pull out if you jerk hard enough. Sometimes it really is a fracture!

I broke my collar bone on the 30th of January 2005! KX125
i went to a friends house 40km from town and a hospital..in australia. we made a step down into a dryed up damn, i did it a couple of time no worries.
the next day i jumped on my bike but didnt put my armor on, cause i was just having a play around. as i came up to the jump the bike went into power ban shooting the back end into the air!
before i knew it the bike us in a vertical postion nose diving. i fell off the left side of the bike landing on my shoulder and then skiding on my back for a couple of meters. mean while the bike did 3 cart wheels. i took a beating with a broken collar bone, scratched up back and a scar on my face, my helmet smashed the nose on impact.
The bike only came out with bent bars and bent sub frame!

finally someone clutsier then me I don't feel so bad now. I have rebroken the same place 4 times in 1 1/2 years

After 40 years of racing and riding off road lets see, left collarbone, 2 left ribs, left foot, all the toes on the left foot, lower left leg, left ankle (still has screws in it from 1972), jaw and nose.

collarbone - crash
ribs - crash
left foot and toes - ran into downed bike, foot didn't make it
lower left leg and ankle - got tee boned
jaw and nose - watch out for bare low tree limbs while riding into the sun

Broke mine so hard it was in four pieces (no thanks to my helmet and/or the cheap Kenda Carlsbad front tire I had on) OK, Actually the helmet probably saved my life but it did cause the break when the lower edge crushed into my bones. However, I still blame the tire for "folding" under my rim on a turn off a trail onto a hard pack road. Change of terrain is bad news. I actually felt the tire give then the bike caught and highsided me into the side of the hill next to the road. I hit so hard I blacked out and tried to ride home looking through a little purple window. I still race hare scrambles in the 40 B class but have nothing to prove anymore

Posted by: Dirtbike'n man

broke mine for the first time a week ago im in a sling now and am missing my first two harescrambles. me and friend we wrestling and i was gonna tackle him and he threw me( yes i flew 6 feet) down a hill and landed with my head turned and smashed it . the bone is still hanging on by a peice of fiber stuff from inside the bone. i will have a lump but it should heal fine and not sag lower then the other side

Broke my collar bone when I was 5 on a Yamaha PW50. I was driving down a grass trail when the front wheel suddenly fell in a ground hog hole. I flipped over the bars and the bottom of my helmet broke the bone when I landed on the back of my head.

Posted by: Dirtfiend

I haven't broken it yet...

I have a friend that went riding alone (first mistake) he was cruising down a dirt trail that had been washed out during a storm, he didnt know that this happened since last time he went to this area. He hit the washed out spot going about 35mph.

Busted his collar bone, had to pick his bike up ride back 40 miles to his truck and load the bike in all alone. He said he could feel the bones grinding the whole way back.

Just joined the club friday night! Although it was on my street bike, lowspeed highside. Gotta let the tires heat up a little at night before you gas it in a turn. Picked it up and rode home with right side broken and no right side foot peg, got the car and off to the ER. Ouchie

just broke my collarbone and two ribs saturday. Got back from the ortho today and he said no riding for 8 wks. These figure eight braces are a pain in the a$$$

I went over the handlebars on landing 2 weeks ago, landed without a collarbone break, but fractured c-7 in my neck. Now I got a 6 week break from work and a neck brace!!

I was off work last monday (july 18th) and we had friends outside i got my wifes mountain bike and was doing stunts using speed bumps to get me in the air. Ive been doing these stunts such as jumping abt 4 feet in the air after hitting the speed bump for years but this day was messed up. I did a couple of jumps to warm up and the hit a good jump, went 4 feet up and landed good...came around to do it again, BUT hit the speed bump at an angle and the bike was leaning over went in the air landed and bike was wobbling bad....thats all i remember. i woke up hearing the sound of rushing water (there was nothing around to make that noise) and people around me telling me im gonna be alright..im thinking "what hell is going on", then i tried to get up and screamed..my shoulder area hurt so bad......discovered i broke my collarbone. Now heres what happened (the stuff i dont remember) when i landed and the bike was shaking bad i landed on the side of my head against concrete (whick knocked me out) hit my shoulder (force of the imact snapped my collarbone). after falling i sat up and my eyes rolled back. my best friend said he was standing right in front of me but i dont remember any of that. he laid me down gently and i was trying to breathe...i stopped breathing for about a minute i was white and lips blue....after 3 minutes i woke up. this scared everyone but im tough...im a fedex driver for crying out loud and already have a fractured toe, elbow, got run over by a fedex truck last year (no broken bones) and i have a bad shoulder. this accident makes me realize how quickly life can be taken....take care of yourselves but never stop what you love doing
I would also like to mentioin what a wonderful job my wife does taking care of me. ive been getting better since a week has gone by but i cant return to work until 6 weeks at the least. my wife bathes me tucks me in clothes me helps me walk feeds me...she does whatever she needs to do in order to make me comfortable...and sometimes i get to hurting so ****ing bad and i cant get comfy no matter what and so i let the tears run and when i do she does the same...she doesnt like seeingme in pain and i know she loves me. she had nightmares...replaying the accident over and over thinking i died...but give her a round of applause (cuz we folks with broken collarbones need all the help we can get, right??)
also my friends who stop by and make me laugh (my wife does that enuf) and fix me drinks and try tomake me a bit more comfy. so hats off to all....btw its gonna be a LONG time before i get on that bike again lol

Well i have never broken a bone on a dirtbike before. Since ive never really rode one alot. Just starting. But anyways yea i broke 3 bones in my life. And have had surgery and broken neck percations done and so forth to.

I sprained my neck sxo bad i that it was broken. I did it when i was waking up in the RV, i hit my head as i sat up and kinked my neck so bad i was stuck in bed for a long time. Nearly 7 hours of wondering if i can get out of bed my friend called the ambulance and the got me out. Went and got checked out at the hospital, they took some x-rays and said my neck was just sparained. Therefore the gave me some morfene and i was on my way.

I broke my left wrist 2 times.

1st time was when i was 13 and went snowboarding for the first time. I went with one of those school ski trips for the day in junior high. Ill have to say i laned on my wrist so many times that the girls were fallowing me down the hill so they could laugh at me. Well at about 4 oclock i went down the biggest ski hill there was and went at full speed down the hill. (i didnt know how to stop u see, or carv to slow down) Anyways i got to the bottom of the hill going so fast i flew between some safety instructures and flipped the snowboard 8 times down the hill. (wrist broke) Funny thing is i never new and continued to snowboard and fall on it again and again, thinking it was sprained. AND i never went to go get it checked out for 24 hours because my parents thought i was faking it.

ANyways this is taking along time. Ok i broke it again jumping off the swing while it swung at 30 feet high. THAT HURT!! could here it pop noise

Finally i broke my ankel jumping off a big tire swing(semy tire) when the rope broke and the tire smoked my foot against the ground. Funny thing again i never went to the hospital for 2 days because my parents thought i was faking it to not go to school.

Little long sry

Hate to hear about all that other stuff though.

Back in 85 me and my bud were goofing off, trying some new wrestling moves. I flipped him flat on his chest and broke his collarbone. Yes, I'm a member.

Riding Related: Never broken anything riding... luck :P.
Non-Riding Related: Broke everyone of my fingers, some more than once. Broke almost everyone of my toes, some more than once. I broke my arm in half (between wrist and elbow)... All of that was done BMX'ing or playing baseball... And a lot of it was caused in one crash... Sometimes you just gotta pick, either hit a car doing 50, or eat pavement.

Let's see........ Bad or Bad..... Not too much to choose from. At least you're still alive.

I'm new to this broken bone thing... 3 breaks in 2 months, all separate incidents and I’m 42.

1st bone I ever broke, my baby toe. I stubbed it on my own shoe in the kitchen. It hurt so bad I thought I was going to die. I think I passed out from the pain.

2nd, riding my dirt bike. Ripping through a corner 3rd pinned. Both tires let go at the same time. I’m lucky I only broke my thumb. It hurt, more like burned but I was still able to ride the rest of the day.

3rd, broke my leg. Small bone (outside) just above the ankle in a 2-5 mile/hr low side tip over. I knew instantly that I broke it but I was able to pick up my bike, walk it off the track, turn off the gas and lay it and myself down to contemplate. I picked up the bike again, started it and road it to the pits. Loaded it, drove home, put the trailer in the garage, packed a care package for the hospital (sandwich, water, dirtbike mag etc) and drove to the hospital. 17hrs later I emerged with a below the knee to toe cast.
3 weeks later I decide I can't stand the cast any more & cut it off.
6 weeks later the doctor tells me that in 6 more weeks I can start riding again...

Needless to say I’m devastated.

Doc says I can start to move it and put weight on it but I can’t. My foot/ankle hurts like crazy with any weight.
I cut my cast off because I read on www.mybrokenleg.com that the rehabilitation of the ankle is the biggest issue do to zero ankle movement for 6 weeks in a cast. I couldn’t agree more, even after 3 weeks locked in a cast and now 3 weeks of simply moving it an inch or so up and down it is still tight. It is getting better daily and I hope to be able to put weight on it soon but the swelling is painful and any weight on it feels like someone is jabbing a knife in the top of my foot.…

Any comments on this?

Hey, Chicken Hawk, What do they do with a broken humerous? Just a sling or...how do they get a cast on it? Is this a surgery issue?

Posted by: b1dude

Broken right hand-"friend" used it for traction in highschool f-ball

Dislocated left shoulder-flag football of all things...the most pain came from the "pre-med" goobers that thought they could "fix" me by pulling and pushing at the same time.

Broken right big toe....the one I love and am still married too made me so mad I had to punish the couch by kicking it...the couch and my wife won....I had to drive myself to the ER for being such a hot head

Dislocated left shoulder again...changing water pump on 3/4 chev 4x4. Wrench slipped off big nut on water pump..arm stayed in engine compartment...body fell over fender....arm not connected at shoulder any more...this was fun.

Still no surgery yet on shoulder.....stay in the gym and work out like a mad man....you can stay away from the knife..

Torn PCL last year....almost perfect dismount from my Kawi...except the knee that didn't work after.

Broken collar bone last weekend. Square hit bump ...on the kiddie track w/my 9 year old of all things...front tire went over...back tire "bounced" over...I go half way over the bars tsunami style...the bike completes it's rotation just after I go shoulder first into the mojave desert...followed by my own bike on top...healing at present.

Obviously we can either choose to remain humble or God brings gravity to bear....

Researching now to see if there is something we can wear/do as MX'rs to prevent collar bone injuries....I think my helmet edge is what might have done in my collar bone...wasn't wearing my chest protector..too hot and didn't need it for roost that day....I'll wear it all the time now.

Posted by: DC-1

not a broken clavicle but.....totaly dislocated the clavicle from the scapula by tearing the ac lig's actually a grade 3 dislocation. The only thing holding the bone in place is the subdeltoid fascia. All this from a very low speed get off-stick like a lawn dart kinda wreck! there are times you would rather break the bone!

I met a kid this weekend who was riding near the power towers at Carnegie and pulled the skin and meat off of his middle toe when he met up with one of the bolts which hold the tower down. They had to amputate his toe. Anything I have done is wuss campared to that.

Be careful with that shoulder and be sure to do a lot of strengthening excercises for the muscles and ligaments.

I wrestled through junior high and high school very competitively and had a progressive shoulder injury much like yours that was career ending. What happened with mine is I stretched the ligaments out so badly that my shoulder drooped a good inch and a half lower than the other, to the point that it was almost dislocated all the time. The orthopedic doc would send me to do strengthening excercises, it'd tighten back up, he'd clear me to wrestle, then I'd go back out and screw it up again. Finally I had to call it quits. At that point, I had torn it up so badly that gravity alone made it 10x worse the 6 months after I stopped wrestling. I ended up having to have my shoulder reconstructed by stitching ligaments together and putting my cartiledge capsule back where it belonged. The fun part was after the surgery, my shoulder was immobilized for 6 weeks, and was then too tight, so months of physical therapy was needed to stretch it back out to normal.

I consider it well worth it now. No more bones clacking together, no more random arm numbness, and no more searing pain doing the most simple tasks (i.e- reaching out to open a door). The only after effect I have is what I suspect is the beginning of arthritis. I get a dull ache every time it rains.

In regards to something to protect your collarbone from your helmet, look into an EVS race collar, or something of a similar brand. I picked one up about 3 weeks ago, I believe the RC2 model. Whichever one it is, it's the slimmer model. I choose to not zip-tie it to my chest protector for the reason of added collarbone protection. It was weird wearing the first time I went riding, but I don't even notice it now. No reduction of head movement while riding, I don't even notice it's there now. I know it won't guarentee I won't sustain a collarbone/neck injury, but I'll take all the added protection I can get.

Broke my right collar bone and my right arm 200 miles from home on hour 9 of a long backwoods treck.Rode for 3 hours in the pitch black to get out.Not fun..especially on a 300lb Honda 600..No surgery or casts...

I have had 11 other broken bones, not riding related.(sports and fighting)

A small foot note to my above post...

I was wearing a chest protector at the time.Don"t really want to know what would have happened with out it...It ripped the netting out and broke the gaurd in two..

ankle is a tough one to get working again. myy physical therapy involved a large rubbe band, holding my foot with it and applying pressre with my hands whhile trying to pull my foot with the ankle muscles. it will get better. been 5 years and aside from the scars, knot, and a bit of pain every now and then it's alright.

collarbone? yep. at military school. it snowed and we were playing like fools. i got tossed by the CO and landed on my left shoulder with a lound snap and a loud profanity. interesting few months after that, it works fine now, except an audible pop at some points of shoulder travel.

I have never broken a bone, although once when I was Chopping wood (i had a woodsplitter not an axe) and i missed the log and if flew at full strength straight into my left foot, pain pain pain i had a bruise there for 6 months, and beleive it or not the bruise was all i got, i didnt even get a hairline fracture, and thank god it was not an axe or i'd have half a foot

I broke my collar bone, arm and my nose just standing on a sidewalk. A car accident sent a ford falcon heading my way at 50 mph ( according to the skid marks )which clipped me on the right thigh and sent me over the top of it. The best I can do to tell people how it felt is like this, shake your head from side to side really fast, then slam your face on the pavement.

Posted by: 2strok4fun

didnt break my collorbone, but doc said I should have, I broke my sternum instead. Had I flown another 10ft I would have crested the hill and the impact wouldnt have been so bad.

I have never broken any bones previously except my nose, and all I can say about the broken sternum, tear prompting sneazes.

Posted by: kxguy967

i broke all three! i mean both and one twice along with a hand, and an arm.

Posted by: ihone

i broke both merging onto I-610 here in Houston from richmond Ave. there was a tapered down slot, where they built the onramp after they built the freeway. got my 750 into it, tank slapped 6-7 times, and ate concrete. The thing that broke my collarbones, was my helmet's jawline. Hit the back of my helmet on the inside curb, that seperates the shoulder of the freeway from the fastlane.

Good learning experience tho.....Don't ride a streetbike in Houston. heh.

I broke my finger years ago not at all related to riding. I had my hand on this bench, then my brother (not looking) jumps on the bench to sit on it "YEEEOOOOWWWW" it was actually a fracture. It still hurt like heck.

Hey I broke mine the first time on a 50 ft. double w/tabletop landing. The takeoff was rutted up bad. I didnt get my wheels lined up in the takeoff right and it threw me sideways in the air. I was hoping i could ride it out but it threw me sideways off the bike and the right side of my helmet slammed against the ground and broke my left collarbone. The second time i was going a round a curve in first gear and fell on my shoulder and it broke in the same spot and grew back together overlapped. How many of yalls collarbones grew back together like that.

Can't vote because the right choice aint there for me.

Got real lucky last weekend though.

My suspension needs work therefore my bike kicked me off the back over the bars ran me over and then landed on my tailbone.

I'm real lucky there we're other riders in the area, and I did'nt breack my collarbone or get paralyzed, I was able to ride home shortly after, but it sure hurt like hell.

Posted by: nick545

Never broke anything (but after voting I think ima break something).......Now Im scared of going riding
Which one is the most painful to least painful?
(Cause worst that happened to me is probably getting punched in the nose)
collar bone
nose
ribbs
hips
jaw
legs
arms

I heard somewhere that when you brake your collar bone that the spot that brakes gets stronger but the rest of your collar bone gets weaker....making it easier to break?

Posted by: hndarida4life

i think i have broke my collar bone every time i try a new jump that is hard as hell or i dont think i can do i always **** that **** up now they look like mountains bumpy as hell.

I've snapped both bones in my left arm, now have 2 metal plates and 14 screws in my left arm. Dislocated my knee and broke my collarbone all in one wreck. I wasnt in shock either, amanzingly I felt no pain at all because my whole body hurt!!

Posted by: Mullenhead

Broke it the first time practicing on some farmland a friend of mone owned. Someone had taken tree stump that had been plowed up, roots and all, and stuck it upside down in a gopher hole. The grass was knee high and I didn't see it... BOOM the roots got stuck in my frame rail and ripped the bike out from underneath me. Next thing I know was I was looking at sky and my buddies looking down at me, "are you alright", "sure", I said then i tried to get up... Nope nevermind. Went to the Doc, had a shoulder brace. Doc sadi 6 weeks no riding.. I was like WHAT! 4 weeks later I was in the sand pit and dumpped it in a big sand berm on the same side. Got up and kept riding, got home that night took of my jersey and brace and my shoulder was hanging a little low. Went back to the Doc the next day he did an x-ray and came in and said, "You went riding didn't you?" Then he said I need to set that.. It's still broken to this day. One side overlapping the other and calcium built up all around it. Didn't seem to slow me down though...

Sustained a fracture of the medial and lateral malleolus and "chipped" another bone last weekend. Fortunately I only need to wear a boot for several weeks. I consider myself lucky.

so now the important question! how bad does it hurt??

Posted by: dynastyyz

when i broke my collar bine i was four years old and my sister spun me around a bunch of times then me being the stupid one wanted to go downstairs and i tripped on the third step i had to wear this vest to keep it from moving it was a compound brake meaning you could see it i didnt even need an x-ray

i broke my collar bone about 2.5 weeks ago at MX207 in lyman maine. butterfly fracture which means it is a clean snap, cracked and chiped. that is my only real injury.... from dirtbiking

Mountain Biking: broken back (T7 T10 T11)
Hockey: broken arm/wrist

i broke my collarbone the first time i rode my 89 kx 250, hit the gas like my 125 and over i went. still rode home

Well, I have not broken my collarbone completely. It go a hair line crack and did not break all the way. It still hurts only when I stop working out.

2-broke my same arm
2-broke my same leg
1-almost lost my middle finger, over shot a jump and my finger hit a rock and the tip was hanging off.
1-hyper extended my elbow

Just got back into riding after taking some time off. Was riding streetbikes, so I am hoping I can remain healthy.

I was part of that never broke a bone, except for some cracked ribs from riding and football... But I decided to go out for a night ride this past friday on my banshee... Well normal i just take her out for a quick blast throught the fields at my house, no big deal right... Well no gear or a helmet. When i went to transfer off the rode to the field going close to 85mph my right front tire "which was flat" had the rim grab some odd bump. Tossed me close to 30 yards into the woods and my quad a good 60 or so. Well after i woke up i was missing my shoe's,phone, even my 4-wheeler. I had to walk home to get a flashlight. Went to the hospital saturday. And had 2 broken bones in my hand, fracture in my left arm, 3 ribs cracked. And needed 4 stitches in my head, and 2 in my ear... Now i'm still black and blue head to toe. with some nice eyes to match. Lucky i am, and will never ride with out my helmet, street or dirt for now on.
Thank you guardian angel for watching over me friday!!!!!!

I havent broken my collarbone but my friend broke his collarbone and his fibula after falling off the back of a razerback at the dunes. He was pretty messed up after that.

Myself ive only broken wrist (both the radius and ulna) doing grappling at Tae Kwon Do. I Remember playing with it because it was like rubber. Ive ripped my foot open on barb wire though, i was riding my bike with sandels on (havent done that since ) and the front tire caught up the end of the wire. A barb grabbed one side of my foot and ripped through all the way to the other side. I now have an awesome 5 inch scar across the top of my foot. :D

I ate it today riding though. Front tire caught a rock and slide out. I went flying and landed on my knees....directly on some rocks. Needless to say i wasnt wearing kneepads. My knee is starting to swell up and its quite bruised.

Today is my first official day back that i can ride since i broke my collar bone at rocky hill track in Ct this summer looking forward to getting back on!

Posted by: red_rider_cr85

i just broke my collarbone a week ago. me and some friends have a track that we can ride to, and i was on my way there on my 85 and i just had to hop up onto a curb, so i pulled my front wheel up, my back wheel hit and the rim bent so that it was formed to the curb and i just flew right over the bars.

-i broke my collarbone(compound fracture)
-my right wrist in 3 places(i had to have surgery to get it back in place and they put pins in it)
-and i dislocated my shoulder

Posted by: TRIS

i have never broken and bones except my index finger during riding. tomorrow im riding tommy searles new practise track, only one person has tried it out and his smashed his collar bone in 2 places over a double there. scary.......

I broke my collarbone in 5 pieces, errremm ,oh yeah fell off a ladder. Doc fixed it 7-1, metal plate donor bone. 14 weeks later after I was released to go back to work Something popped in the area and was burning, x-ray showed the metal snapped in 2 pieces. After he gave me the option of leaving it or fixing it, he fixed it with a chunk of my hip and a "better" plate and told my wife he did a better job! See my gallery.

Posted by: KX250Dad

whenfoxforks-ruled.... can I relate, up hill double, back yard, unloaded off the bike... hurt bad enough. I think what broke the bone in to many splinters was the KX250 followed behind me... yeap, pushed me into the dirt another 6 inches. I gotta a piece of my leg in there now and I'm sporting some of that titainum hardware with the 1/2" screws myself. Funny thing was three days later when my son was laughing... appears he found the nobie bruises on my back to be funny. Us gooood mx guys always have bones where there not supposed to be, leg in the shoulder, hip bone in the neck... yep, I'm good, downside is my son's not much better, hip, wrist, leg, fingers... at least when I pay the insurance premium I feel like we're getting are monies worth. Yes, my wife still loves us both... "next time you can't park the bike, it'll be sold before you get off the table" lotta mx love here.

The JERK that fixed my clavicle better the second time sniveled that nobody makes them in titanium, just SS, but them menards black phosphate screws ain't gonna last long! And if there was a way to get juniors healing capabilities,,,,,, Friday the bone doc is going to take one of the screws out on the end, local dope and a small incision, this will be interesting! He remembers in the xray it looked like it might be interfering with my range of motion, oh you mean the feeling my arm is dislocating from socket! NICE! The second plate is a lot beefier, hope it doesn't break!

can anyone tell me what a collarbone break feels like? and what u do to heal it and how long it takes, and what are the things people do to break them (ex. take a turn to sharp fall on shoulder) or what?

A broken collarbone sucks. You can only move your arm up so much or else it hurts. After you break it and it's all healed you have a bump in your body. It looks like a rod sticking out. It took me a little over a month to heal both of mine. And what broke my collarbone was the helmet came down when I landed on my head and broke. So now I have a EVS collarbone protecter.

4 ribs, left hand, right collar bone. All with in 7 months

Posted by: Joe Kovarik

I just voted too.AndI broke my collar bone riding my dirt bike. It has been 3 months and still not healed 100%. Maybe because I am 43 and still riding.

Posted by: YZmoto915

add another one to the list haha, seems to be a popular bone to break...

Posted by: fisco

I am guessing that most of the collar bone breaks happened on the mx track?

Have never broken a bone. I ride a KDX along with 5 other KDX riders, the total carnage list looks like this...

tweaked knee X2 (not serious)
twisted ankle
concussion (me)

And we dont ride like grannies, the scariest accidents are when flying through the air with my bike dissappearing underneath me (into rocks).

MX guys are in a different league. Im too scared to jump period.

Posted by: Smit-Dog

3 broken collarbones (2 were multiple breaks), all in the woods, all on the left side.... I've never ridden an MX track. Trees don't move; bones do.

Posted by: Mudd Slinger

I broke mine on a mini trail 50 when I was around 12 (too long ago). I also cracked my helmet, knocked myself unconcious, and received a concusion at the same time. I fell into a jeep rut that was not there the day before. I was separated from the group and by myself. Instincts took me home but I don't remember the ride, just the stars (during the day).

ive never broken a bone

just a few bumps and bruises

This is especially for the over 40 club.

Broken bones take X3 as long to heal compared to 20yrs ago.

After 6 weeks mine, broken while riding the local track...showed no signs of improvement.

I needed to get back to work (job has specific physical reqs, my condition has to be verified by a specific doc before I'm allowed to work)..

Sold the idea to my orthopod/insurance company that I needed a bone growth stimulator (BGS)(settle down beavis...)

Was riding again after 6 more weeks.

Not sure if the BGS accelerated things or not but I'm REALLY glad I did it....because the post/splint atrophy of my shoulder muscles was far worse than the damage done by the break. I was a significant physical therapy issue after coming out of the shoulder splint. Bottom line is I came out of the splint as soon as the break would allow me....any more and I think I would have had exponential negative results just from how tight my shoulder was getting.

During any PT you get....ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS...use alternating ICE/Heat after each session. Just because some gorilla hairly PT dude says pain is good and enjoys making you hurt...don't stop there. When you get home...ICE the sore parts w/alternating heat/light stretching w/o pain. This was huge to my progress as well.

By 6 months I was back to 99% w/my previous gym/weights routine.

I'm convinced if I hadn't been real aggresive w/the doc/insurance co. I would have lost a lot of physical ability. This would have been a big deal to me as a rider...even more a deal as a father of two really active boys.

Good luck out there to anyone dealing with this.

Mine seems stronger since it is overlapped by about an inch. I've landed hard on it several times and its still holdin up.

Posted by: cannonballgsu

does this answer your question? http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y1.../shattered2.jpg

lol, dirtbike related, first broken bone

Posted by: soap

That xray looked like mine did. Me and some friends drove 8 hours south to go to ocotillo and glamis. We stayed at ocotillo for 3 days, and on the last day I was getting too comfortable with some of the jumps. I was screwing around on a small gapped step up and caught a rock on the landing with my back tire. The bike kicked me hard and I flew about 30-40 feet down 15 ft of elevation. I landed square on my head and the edge of the helmet broke my collarbone.

For some reason I didnt feel any pain. Until 20 mins later when my friend was driving the truck through the desert to get to the highway (I think he was aiming for the bumps!). We still went to glamis for 3 days and the alcohol and V made the time pass. I now have a plate with 6 screws that aligned all the broken pieces.

Posted by: GO-BIG

broke it on this guys track and after i did it he said that the same jump had claimed 3 other peoples collar bones befor... coincidence? haha

Posted by: TheGDog

Never broke any of my bones riding dirtbikes strangely enough.

With the exception of one drunken wrestling match... and getting hit by a car once on a street bike which broke a meta-tarsal bone in my foot requiring a pin for a lil bit...

ALL THE OTHERS have been on Mountain bikes either doing jumps... or riding Downhill.

The Rt Collarbone was twice. The first time it broke was spectacular! We were at the corner edge of this park which is atop a Mesa. Ya push ur bike up the hillside... turn around and zoom down and hit this beautifully smooth bowl jump... the kind that launches you more length-wise than height-wise.

Had done the jump 7-10 times or so that day. Took a newbie guy with me to this spot so he could learn to jump. I go for one more.... pushing another 10 feet higher up the hill. The extra speed was sweet... hit the jump perfectly... perfect flight attitude.. flying straight as an arrow....distance of flight path was 35 of my size 10 feet placed end-to-end... the landing was perfect too... but for some reason... she wanted to knife under... I tried to spot my landing and tuck and rool into it.. but there was just too much velocity smacking the back side of my shoulder... so SNAP!!!

This bike was a X-country bike with some suspension. This is when I learned that X-country bikes have X-country inner tubes which are paper-freakin'-thin. Sigh...

Then the next year I re-broke the same break (ortho figures it prolly never healed right) clearing a 12' double at SheepHills where I'd forgotten to nose-down the bike via handbrake and rear tire tapped the landing jump and bike wanted to loop out from under so I intentionally bailed off to the side.

The dang thing just wasn't healing so finally they put on this Bone-Growth stimulator and it did the trick.

Drunken-wrestling = cracked ribs.. AND... me not getting laid that night from getting F'd up. Was SOOOO PISSED!! HaHA!

Broke my collarbone June 6 of this year - first broken bone ever. Broke it at the end of a 3-double section. Hit the first one OK, gassed it too hard going into the 2nd one and gassed WAY too hard and panic-revved the hell out of it on the 3rd. Bike landed vertically on the back tire and threw me off the bike when the front tire slammed down to the ground. Landed head-first and was knocked out. My present for the day was a mild concussion and the broken collarbone.

I didn't know it was broken until the following Friday (this was a wednesday out riding) when I met up with a friend of mine who is a medical massage therapist and she noticed the huge lump and told me to get X-rays. Off work for 7 weeks and then light duty for another 2.

Never broken a bone

Posted by: 2-Strokes 4-ever

Early 70's, I was about 14, Shadow Glen track at Indian Dunes. This guy and I tangled bars on the face of a jump, it's about all I remember from that day. Ended up with a broken collarbone and a cuncussion. Even to this day my little brother laughs when he tells the story....... "I can't believe mom and dad waited till the next day to take you to the hospital. You spent all the rest of the day and night mainly unconcious, moaning and groaning.........and barfing up dirt!"

Posted by: whenfoxforks-ruled

Same thing happened to me when I was a youth, concussion, kept asking the same thing over and over, throwing up,,, he has been drinking! Time #2, doubled over in pain and throwing up, and a fever,,,, stomach flu? Nooooo 6 weeks draining poison from busted appendix! If in doubt do not figure, GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM!

Posted by: xkevenx

broke it and knoked myself out while jumping(trying to) i just turned down the gas and the front wheel just dived into the ground, now one year later when i could efford anew bike i am trying to jump a big jump again

Broken right shoulder blade/compressed 1 vertabrae/hyperextended knee /Concusion/road rash on 1/3 my back.
That was all in one go. 4 years ago...Fun riding with a buddy...I rode back to town after catching my breath. I kept waking up as my bike started to wobble or fall over, I couldn't use the clutch so idled home in first.
In 1992 I tore ligaments in left ankle (still feel it ..must be some rhumatiz) and crushed 1 vertabrae racing in open ATV class. My Quad died while taking off the lip of the first double and spit me in front of it after just missing the nose in to the back side of the landing. Needless to say I got drove over like I was touching my toes...folded me up .
Crushed/broke the rear of the helmet with the bumper of bike, and I figure the linkage dogbone felt the best on my recently crushed vert...(I flipped off bike and landed ass first). The only conselation was even with dnf I had enough points for third overall and hobbled in crutches for the trophy....I love race weekend.

Kids wear those protectors ,I was luckier than I deserved.

My right collar bone is the only bone I have broken,(knock on wood) and it was in three pieces. A low side on one of these fine traffic filled Cali freeways. My Aprilia is still mad at me for that one. I have been lucky with the bones, not so lucky with soft tissue. To put it lightly, I have battle scars.

Posted by: brapbrap

ah,yes. i broke my clavical or however you spell it,ate too much calcium and now have a sweet lump on the left. i also just broke my pinky finger again on my pedal bike doing a bar spin.ive broken more fingers on that thing!

Broke my left colar bone and 7 ribs in ten place's last summer.
Bad get off going over a 5 foot jump with a muddy take off.
Doc said wait 8 weeks and see what happens. After 8 weeks
bone did not heal. Waited 2 more weeks for sugery, then had a pin placed in the colar bone so it would heal staight. Had the pin in for 3 months. This was far more painful then the original break. Finally had the pin removed and was 75% better the next day. 2 more weeks till my first ride since july
30,2007 can't wait goin to St. joe state park in MO.
If anyone needs surgury to repair a colar bone get the plate and screws not the pin!!!!!!

Thats kind of ironic, my little brother just broke his collar bone on our gokart, while wearing a helmet and a seatbelt. the thing has a rollbar and everything. it flipped over and the seatbelt had slack in it, he moved forward and hit the end of the line. crackk. i felt like an..... becase i was driving.

havent broken my collar bone but
i have ripped 3 tondons in my shoulder
wich...from wat i felt
cant have felt too much better haha

I've been at it a long time and never broke anything, despite some horrendous crashes. At one particularly tough (physically) race, I came in from the 2nd moto and as I was lifting my bike onto a stand, I felt a sharp pain in my side. Thinking I'd simply pulled a muscle, I thought nothing more of it. The next day, at work, I happened to sneeze....the pain was incredible! After work, I went to the E.R. and their x-rays showed three broken ribs. The doctor said they were likely "stress-fractured", during the race and lifting the bike afterward, finally made 'em break. Kinda' sucks, when ya' break somethin' and can't even brag about how it happened.

When i was about 10, and very stupid!I had a TM125 suzuki, and one day i decided to figure out what the little lines that went to the cylinder were for(oil injection)(duh). So I disconnected them, and then went up the road as fast as i could. The bike locked up,highsided me, and then tumbled over me. I had 2 broken collar bones(had to wear a halo for 3 months),a broken arm, 2 bruised ribs, and alotta road rash.THE DUMBEST THING I HAVE EVER DONE!!!!!

does getting a foot tore off ,and reattached count?

I had my first wreck on sept 5th 1979. I came around a blind tree covered corner and hit another bike front tire to front tire
I don't know what/where i hit,i was knocked out...so was the other guy. When i woke up he was hurt and could not move.I got on my bike (g5b100 Kawie1975) somehow found the power to kick it over,3rd try my baby started.I rode about a mile to the highway.i remember a little of the ride.I got on the road...the wrong way and down the shoulder i went to the gas station.i asked the guy for a dime to call my Mom. I remember him shaking and giving me the dime.i called Mom and said i wrecked the bike.Mom yelled at me(she didn't know i was hurt). I sat on a chair and a cop that took my bike away from me about a week before this was grabbing me asking if i was ok and about the other guy.He got it bad,His bike was done, all bent up.My bike had no major damage. My mom and dad picked me up and took me to the hospital. They x rayed my face,i vomited on the xray techs.I broke my cheekbone.I had a ENT dr operate on my face, went in my mouth, cut a hole to my cheek and pulled the bone out,I missed 3 months of school. I was back on the bike 3 weeks after my wreck,I spent 2 weeks in the hospital. I broke my nose and have sinus damage.I can blow air out of my right eye,I guess i could shoot milk out of it.

Posted by: JFAB

I came up short on a double, hit it just right that the bike almost stoped in its tracks. My head hit the fender, chest hit the cross bar. I stayed on the bike but it would have been better if I had gone over the bars. This was 3 months ago and my collarbone still gives me pain. Too dumb to go to the Dr, go fig!
