Annual Clear Creek New Year's Ride
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: GETMETOCA
WHEN: Dec 31st - Jan 2nd / Wed, Thurs, Fri
WHERE: Oak Flat Campground, Clear Creek (Coalinga)
Karna and Justin are once again hosting the third (or fourth?) annual ride at Clear Creek - come one come all! It was a blast last year with about 18-20 folks showing up over the course of the three days. If we get one more rain before New Year's conditions should be near perfect!
Mostly a fun group trail ride. The faster guys usually get their rides in as well, so no worries!
Here's some pics (Thanks ggoja!) from last year to refresh your collective memories of how much fun it was:

Cool, should be able to make it 1-1 Thursday. Bring on the soggy oatmeal mud.

We will be there... weather permitting
Happy Holidays!

Has the 50 mph winds and torrential rain been scheduled? Nothing like pulling Buddy and Mini's tent out of a tree. Or doing carb work with a sonicare toothbrush in the rain.

I forgot all about that!

I'll be rolling into the Creek around 11pm Wed :thumb:

Man, I was beginning to wonder if you Northerners were planning the New Year's ride in secret to keep out the riffraff.:whiner: I'll be up there with my trusty camera in tow.
Posted by: placelast
My oldest son and I might make it for the 1st - day only as he has work day before and after.
Posted by: Kawidude
I'll be there on the 1st. I wouldn't cry if there was a little less mud than last year!

...and that was probably the driest hill in the whole park! I'm sure it will still be fun...even with the mud!

Sure was some good conditions at the creek today. Got a dry day between rain storms. Oh what, you guys had to work

Oh Yeah!
Well I got to hmmmm.......you just better watch out! When I get out there I'll make you wait a long time for me to finish a trail section. :flame:

Hi, all!
Yeah, that camping and riding were something I had never experienced before.
Unfortunately Buddy and I are going to miss 2004 New Year's Ride in Clear Creek. We are going to Pismo Beach with three kids. The trip is kind of a present for the kids so.....
I hope you will have a lot of fun in nicer weather! :thumb:

What has Pismo got that Clear Creek doesn't. Beach? they can play in the creek across from the camp ground. Just make sure they are using chemical resistant gloves, and aprons. Sand? They can play in the old mine trailings.
Dunes, I don't think you've been back in the the section with the big dune/nude hillside. Heck bring along a card board box to slide down the dune of death. Big time fun!
:scream:
Posted by: GETMETOCA
We'll miss you Buddy and Mini!!
But have a great time! Pismo Beach is my old stompin' grounds (Cal Poly days)
Jonala, you are CORRECT! Nothing can beat the fun of a potentially bio-hazardous creekside playground with the potential for overnight human popsicle makings - Clear Creek has it ALL!

Don't call me if you have to leave your bikes on a trail for week......
Have a great time,
Brian

Weather forcast says RAIN!
I'm not really feeling that
Posted by: GETMETOCA
I just got off the phone with Justin, he says its going to be worse (muck, rain, goo) than last year but with the added thrill of snow
I think I'm gonna call Farmer John and see what he's feelin, but right now I'm feeling like I'd rather find another venue or hold off til it dries up a little.
But don't let that stop the rest of you hard-core types!
Posted by: bratt
Snow, muck, rain AND goo? Now really, you guys know how
crap-tacular I am at trail riding. Throw me a bone here!
Posted by: treefinder
The muck-riding doesn't worry me as much as the muck-camping! Errr, waitaminnit, the muck is what kept Les out for an overnight. Hmmm...

Frank, it was our choice of trails that lead to our march into darkness last April. Thanks to experience and wisdom passed on from FJ, I now avoid the eastside(cow trail) when there are clouds and moisture in the air. I believe traditionally this new years ride is wet and muddy so I'm going riding :thumb:

Bratt,
No problem riding Clear Creek with axel deep mud :scream: All you have to do is keep that 250 at around 10,000 rpm, in 4th all will be well.
Kidding aside, you will very challenged to ride down there if conditions are even equal to last year. If you have been practicing off road since the Bearfoot, then you might want to try it if you want to be a better off road rider. If you haven't been off road riding, I would suggest you pass, until conditions get a little drier.
Riding Clear Creek is a lot of fun, when you are able to ride it and not fight it.
As for the New Years ride, and my gun ho mentality, if Justin says "next time" I'm fine with that. I also do not look forward to being a human popsicle. I'll camp out when conditions don't suck, but my days of roughing it are over.

I just got talking to a friend that was just up in Clear Creek, and he says the conditions are horrible, way too muddy and no fun at all. Hollister on the other hand has perfect riding cause the lower half is closed which leaves the upper half all open and anyone who rides Hollister knows that Upper half is mostly sand. In the past week I have been up there twice and have had a blast. Last years ride in Clear Creek was a blast though
Posted by: GETMETOCA
Thanks for the info WRSTEVE. That's it for me, I'm out.
Posted by: Kawidude
Looks like I'm out too. Let me know if anyone decides to check out Hollister on New Year's Day. I'd be up for that.

Can't make it New years day because we are having company over, but can make it New Years Eve :D I'll be parked by the vintage track, driving a light blue Toyota truck. I should be there by 9:00 AM
Posted by: fremontguy
I'll look for you at vintage track tomorrow WRSteve. Looks like 2-stroke weather so I'll be bringing the 300exc.
Posted by: placelast
No sense in going if no one else shows. FJ?
Ggoja: you up for Ballinger tomorrow instead?
Posted by: MelloYello
Doh! That's why there was NO ONE there. :whiner:
I'm currently working and staying in Ridgecrest during the week where I don't have web access. So I checked this thread on Sunday night and all seemed to be a go. Loaded up Wednesday after work and pulled into the Creek about 8pm to a fairly empty Oak Slope. Not seeing any familiar trucks/bikes, I parked in the same spot as last year and proceeded to build a fire and drink a beer.
http://community.webshots.com/s/ima...76hWjuxJ_ph.jpg
After a few introspective hours of fire-building and beer-drinking, I called it a night. Just to let me know that I was at Clear Creek and not some foo-foo trail-riding park, the wind howled and the rain pelted down through the night. (Y'all did good to stay home.)
Upon awakening I searched hither and yon for signs of DRNers, but to no avail. So after a breakfast of freeze-dried eggs and bacon, I headed home.
Fittingly, it started to drizzle on my way out. And yes, it did look like it would have been worse than last year.
At least I don't have to wash my bike for two hours!
John, I would have had I been home.
Posted by: GETMETOCA
Jake, I'm so sorry you drove all that way and had to camp out by yourself
I just figured you would check the thread. We'll make it up to you the next time the little Nor Cal group has a gathering. You're always invited!
Posted by: MelloYello
Don't worry about it, Natalie. It's my own fault for not checking the thread. I was looking forward to some tasty linguisa, though.
