Z50 exhaust removal

I have intentions of giving the exhaust on my 1974 Z50 a nice coat of pant seeing how its getting rather rusty. Well, I first removed the heat shields (after a half a can of penetration fluid ). I then proceeded to remove the nuts holding the exhaust on which also seemed to weld themselves in place . I then tried to remove the entire exhaust, well that didn't work it would not come off the head . I thought maybe it had rusted to the head or maybe there was some type of retaining pin. Well, if it was rusted to the head why would it move side to side and up and down? I then searched for some form of pin or spring or anything that could be keeping it from coming off, nothing that I could find . So my question is how do you get this damned exhaust off? Any one who knows or even has an idea to try let me know it will be greatly appreciated.
