Alright im hoping to get a new kdx this summer but im also condsidering working on dads old KD 125. I know the performance difference is night and day but having a old bike is also real cool and unique. Problem is we've had problems with the key that goes from the shaft to the magneto. The slot it goes in on the slot is all wallered out and it keeps slipping out. Me and buddy are going to try and think of way to fix it this weekend, but in case we cant fix it how hard would it be to put a different motor on it and what kind of motors could i look at putting on it? Plus if anyone has ever owned one of these bikes id like to know what u thought of it.

Are you using a metric woodriff key?

not quite sure what that is. i haven't really worked on motorcycles much. i know that there is the little piece of metal that goes into a slot on the shaft and a slot on the flywheel or whatever that wont stay in place cuz it keeps slipping out.

that little piece of metal you are refering to is technically called a woodriff key...its the proper term for it

its basically low-tech kill switch...kinda

the woodriff key will snap if the flywheel, or shaft, or whatever it is hooked up if there is to much torque or uneven torque applied to it---a woodriff key is a hell of a lot cheaper than a flywheel.

If its all wallerd out I would say its possibly been busted before, if not more than once.

any ideas on how to fix it?? if i cant fix i think i may just get a motor off of a ke or ks since i cant find jack for a kd and i think the motors are all really close to being the same. I think the ke has a 6spd transmission instead of the 5 and i dont know if that will change it or not. Im thinking i might just piece this bike together because it could be a fun little working process restoring and put a few modern things on it like maybe some new renthal handelbars cuz damn those old ones are wide.

well you could hunt down another engine. But thats an old engine and not the easiest to find, nor cheap.

A little cheaper method would be just to replace the parts that contain the worn out keyhole i.e. new flywheel, ect.

check out ebay...lots of old stuff on ebay

o heck no man ya gotta stick with the old school bars...wide load I call em
half the challenge of these old bikes is weaving the bars thru trees one handgrip at a time
I have a 81 yama MX175 that I put some moden short bars on and man o man did it feel wrong. That big ol front tire and those short bars was a hassel....so back to stock it went

I still think im going to get some new ones off ebay for it cuz the ones on it are getting real cruddy looking plus im going to relplace the clutch and break levers cuz theyre old and real beat up. Are the handlebars pretty much universal. Or would i need a certain thickness?

theres a few different sizes avaiblable...I dont know the stock size for that bike.

just measeur the diameter of them (guesstamation) and then get on the net and look at a parts catalog for the different diameters available and get the one you need
