Slime: any reason I don't want to use it?

Flat repair on the side of the trail sucks!

It works fairly well. Last year I switched over to a product called TRU GOO that is much better. The dealer that uses it showed me a rear tire with 15lbs of air in it and handed me a ice pick and told me to stab the tire over and over(it looked like it already had atleast 50 punctures!!) which I did and it continued to seal! Needless to say I bought 2 tubes, front and rear that are prefiled with this stuff for $19.99 each and he gauranted them a year with total replacement if they fail.
Good Stuff!

I haver never had any luck with the slime stuff. Not only does it not prevent flats but then you have a big green mess to cleanup before you patch or replace the tube anyway. I would just buy a 21 inch tube and carry it around for a spare when trail riding .Or just carry some scabs they seem to work well when you just want to patch a tube to get you home.

slime in tubes just doesn't work...or at least I've never seen it work.

I've had excellent luck with slime in my motorcycle and bicycle. I use Heavy duty Dunlop tubes and half a bottle of slime in each tube and run them a 12 psi. I haven't had a flat since doing so and its been a year and a half and a lot of trail time. If the bike sets in the garage for a couple of weeks I have to add a few pounds of air before the next ride but thats it. It won't save you from pinch flats though and on big jumps it makes your wheels feel slightly out of balance and some will squirt out when you check the air pressure but to me all of that is worth it to save me from a slow trip back to the truck because of a flat.

I have had great luck with Slime. Haven't had a flat since I started using it. Matter of fact, I have a nail in my rear tire now and it is holding air fine. Just not sure if I want to pull out the nail or not. But I wouldn't go with out the Slime anymore...

I probably would test the slime and pull it out. The last nail I had in there. moved around and made like 55 holes in the tube.

Try the TRU GOO - I have a photo with an ice pick in it if you want to see it. When you switch over you will never have a problem!!

I don't understand this. How do you know it doesn't work? How would you "see" it work? I figure that you wouldn't know if it works. That's the idea, right? Not busting your chops, just getting cranky with people saying "I know such and such..." Am I getting old?

I have used the slime on my mountain bike . I love it . It works like a champ.

Not sure on a motorcycle, however, but I dont see why it would not work.

yup you must be getting old I've seen tons of flat, tubed tires come through work and it seems half of the customers put slim or something like it in. Street or atv tires the stuff works really well to where it glues the bead to the rim and I can't dismount the stupid tire...seals the puncture hole too!! I can see it working in a tube like someone said having a nail in. The hole is mostly filled with the nail still in there so the slime doen't have to seal much...take the nail out and my guess is it wont hold air. I'll spare everyone and stop blabbling on during my sleep deprovised post...later

Okay, that makes sense. But still, I'll run it just in case. I figure it's one of those "cant hurt, might help" things, especially since I almost always shell out the $10 bucks to have the shop change my tire for me.

Anyone know what the difference is between the tube/tubeless types of Slime?

Posted by: psycho

Well, pulled the nail out and the Slime sealed up the hole nicely. Been holding air for 2 days with no problems. Had to add a little air to it at first but not since.

One reason is if you are friends with your wrench you wont use slime. It makes a mess. Hmmm .. have a mess or get home... I have had guys ask if I have slime on my Street bike tires and if you have slime some dont want to do it or charge 50 bucks.

Is there any difference in slime and "fix a flat"?
