Did someone tried a normal cycle computer on his dirtbike?
or
Is a normal cycle computer would work as well?

I've used them in the past. The biggest problem is the wire is never long enough so you have to make it longer (the wire is real small too, I had to use my good glasses just to see it). Also the pickup is not designed to mount on a motorcycle so you have to get creative. Wireless bicycle computers won't work because the distance between the computer and the pickup is longer and the ignition interferes with the signal.

I have done it. It lasted almost a whole season till the pickup broke. if you find one with big numbers they work best I could read the MPH or whatever was in the big numbers but the small numbers (avg speed) were too hard to read while riding. Cheap way to go.. It was cool seeing avg and max speeds for a ride not to mention total distance. You get used to it and always want to know that info. Helps with gas mileage too like when to turn around!

i am gonna try to find a cycle model with the longest wire available, as you said i want it only to determine when i need to go back...and a 150$ CAN is big bucks for a specific motocycle computer.
Greenbean do you remember what was the brand and model of yours?

I was trying to remember. I think it was the Cateye enduro 2. I think I am going to put it on my new bike. I bought a heavy duty pickup to place on the wheel. I used a magnet from a sonicare they are super powerful. I just used some JB Weld to epoxy it to the hub and I zip-tyed the pickup to the fork. It worked great and if you calibrate properly. I used a piece of string wrapped around the wheel twice and then divide the total length by two. They are more accurate than any cable speedometer. Dont worry so much about the long wire I dont think you are going to find one long enough anyways. I soldered and shrink-wrapped a piece of cheapo speaker wire onto mine. Just look for the biggest numbers and three digits just incase you might need them, hehe.. I got mine from bike nashbar for like 26 bucks on closeout. 1800nashbar for a catalog. I think they have a website too.

Performance Bicycle has a bunch of cyclocomputers for cheap.

If you live near a Performance shop, print out the web price and they'll give you that price. Their in-store prices are usually higher than the web.
Trail Tech sells a magnetic front rotor bolt that would eliminate the need to epoxy a magnet to your hub or rotor.

I plan on using a cyclocomputer in the near future and will probably replace the wire with 14 or 16 Ga wire.

Look for a speedo designed to mount on the rear wheel. They're a few more bucks, but have a much longer wire.
