82 yamaha it 250 clutch

I have an old IT that I keep around as a spare (the truth is I love it and can't part with it)
The clutch has been dragging and it's getting harder to shift so I took it apart and found the fingers on the outer clutch basket has some nice grooves.
Am wondering if it's socially acceptable to file them smooth (so the friction plates can move again) or if the hub absolutely needs to be replaced?

When the fingers have light grooves in them, yes just file the grooves down. But if they are that bad, well it really just causes other problems.
I just restored a 81 yz250 using a 82 IT250 for parts. I ran into the same problem and filed down the fingers, worked fine.
If you need any IT parts let me know, I still have a complete bike plastic and all in graet shape.

I'm not sure of the piece you are refurring to. The routing of the clutch cable requires what we call a dead man on the case half its self. This piece is part of the case and is just a slot that the cable goes in and you safety wire it in. This is the way the 82 IT and the 80/81 YZ are both set up.
If you could tell me if I'm talking about the rite part or not I'll go back and look at it. But yes we should have every part to the 82IT.

Thanks guys-was able to find the part this weekend at a local salvage yard, even bought the cable as a spare as it was in pretty good condition. A whopping $8 total. Jim

You can file down the grooves if they are not too deep. Barnett has a great concept where they use an aluminum basket but have steel sleeves over the uprights that engage with the clutch plates. Wear out the sleeves you can just replace them. Pity there is not a service to retro-fit these to old clutch baskets...
