I have ridden Yamahas ('79 & '90 YZ250), Hondas ('97 & '02 CR250R), and now an '04 RM 250. I gotta tell you, the '04 suzi is an amazing bike with great cornering, excellent traction for steep hill climbs, a lot of low end, & a nice mid range hit! The best part is the plush suspension (RG3)! I will never go over to the dark side (4-thumpers).

That's easy - 2009 YZ250. And the next best 2 stroke will be the 2010 YZ250. This bike (09) is the best production bike I've ever seen and retains the light feel/flickability of a 125 and useable power for the average rider. They look great, need very little attention out of the crate, and can run with the other bikes just fine in a race. The engine is pretty much bulletproof. Add a flywheel weight and PC exhaust setup and you're in heaven. What more do you need?

From a woods guy's perspective:
My all time favorite was the 2004 KTM EXC 250. 2nd would be the my 98 CR 250 endurorized with the e-line lighting coil and MCR suspender. Loved that one too. Third...the KDX 200 (EG 225) and heavily modified.

def gona have to go with the 01 cr250. My buddy had on modded with an 285 big bore. It was the only bike that would beat my wr426, it was better sprung and 20 lbs lighter to boot.

I would have to go with the Kx500. Aluminum Frame or not. It has the most insane amount of power, and decent suspension. The only thing that could be better is more balls for me to ride it! :yikes:

The bike I was most proud of would be my 77RM125. I was like 13 when I got it, it was a hoop and 90% blown up. Sometimes I had to spray starting fluid in the cylinder and push start it but it was AWESOME! Some of the best memories I have from my childhood. I wish I would have had the opportunity to ride more different bikes when 2 strokes were more common. I've been without a 2 stroke for about 5 years now and am itching to get another. That and the boys got bikes now so I HAVE TO get something to ride at the track with them, right? I'm thinkin 144........or if I hit the lottery that new Service Honda CR125.

I think the '92 - '01 Honda CR250R motor should get a few votes.

Porting, pipe, carb and ignition changed, but Honda kept the same engine and powervalve design for a decade.

That's impressive, considering the motor was being raced competitively at the highest levels for the entire time.

I can't think of another modern 250 motor that had such a long run without a major re-design.

I am surprised to see so many people saying great things about the 01 CR250. I didn't own one but the local shop let me race one for most of that year. I had more trouble with the Mikuni carb on that thing that I did with the Dellorto on the early KTM50s.

Also surprised to see the 89 YZ250 mentioned. I had one and it had nice bottom end but not much top. Of course, we did some amature head work to that one, so it wasn't stock.

The newest 250 2S I rode was an 04 YZ250 and I was very impressed with it.

That Gomer, is why my 00 CR250 has a Keihn carb on it! Love that bike so much, I want to drop the same motor in my 05 CR450F when it grenades! Putting the 83 CR480 is a nice dream also, but way more labor, and still have the left side kick starter. I like the aluminum frames for MX! The YZ, sits as a cross between MX and trail, imo. BUT, it can be fixed also! And the guys at Service, bring on the EFI bolt on, PLEASE?

It's funny how often the '01 CR250 comes up in this thread. I've got a clean one, that I can't sell for just over $1000. Anybody want to put their money where there mouth is? The factory carb is screwy, but a main jet and YZ125 needle make it very close to right.

I haven't read about it in this thread and have never ridden one, but the 1985 YZ250 engine was raved about for at least a decade after it was produced.

At the time, the recommendation from Eric Gorr was that the cutaway on the slide wasn't enough. So either machine some off the bottom of the slide or throw a Kehein on it.

I naturally lean toward what I've ridden, which is 1974 YZ250A and YZ360A. The best bike and the one I won't part with is my 1981 IT465. Such a brute and flies in the sand washes at the CA deserts. But I think the best two stroke/s is the ones that changed the way we ride. The first mono shocks, 1975 YZ250B and 360B....Yeah I'm a Yamaha guy but I like all two strokes, can't do four strokes. I'll quit riding first.

Gotta put in another vote for the 95 and up KDX-200/220. Bought one in a bucket and fixed *everything* on it, did the EG225 upgrade. Good enough to go anywhere or do anything, not so over the top that you feel like it's secretly waiting to kill you (cough*KTM520*cough). Light, cheap, practically indestructable.

I'll 2nd the 87 CR 250 and I can't leave out the KDX 200.
What about the KTM 300 ?
The bike that stands out the most for me is my buddies son's KTM 200EXC, that bike is featherlite, and he can polk along 2nd & 3rd gear then pull clean right off the bottom and get scary fast in a hurry. Really is fun to ride.

The 1987 CR250 was just perfect. First year with a rear disk brake and the bike jumped and handled amazingly. I also loved the Suzuki 79' PE175, it was a blast as a play bike. Of course have to mention the KX500. The frame is slack and the suspension is soft, but the best desert/hill climb bike ever made. I will never sell mine.

1974 Honda Elsinore MR50. Got one in 1981 when i was 7.
30 yrs later I still want it back . Oh and my 97 CR500,that thing was a wicked ride.
