CDI units are they compatible?

My son has a 1989 RM125 that needs a CDI. Are other year RMs compatible?Dirt Cycle Salvage has a 1987 YZ CDI he says will work.I don't know it may work but could it damage another part latter on? Has anyone ever bought used CDI? Should I just buy a new one?

It will function (assuming it is good) for firing the plug, but I doubt that the ignition curves are even remotely similar. It is a roll of the dice as to how the bike will run, or whether or not it could have serious detonation due to improper advance:eek:. I would try to find the correct module.

Thanks for the info.That was kinda what I was thinking.Looks like $$ for a new CDI. Its the safe way to go.
