hey guys. please forgive me if this is a stupid question but i'm very new at riding. first off, i broke my new 2006 KX-85 in pretty hard. i read that i should change my crankcase oil soon after riding for the first time to be sure there are no metal shavings from the piston getting into the engine. can someone please run the steps down for me on how to properly do this & what type of oil & how much i should re-fill into the crankcase.

thanks very much guys.
Carmine.

The gear oil goes into the gearbox not the crankcase. The oil in the fuel lubricates the piston, cylinder, rings, bearings etc... The filler cap is on the right hand side of the engine, when you sit on the bike, it will be a plastic hand screw bung usually black in colour. When I change the oil on my bike I run it for about 2-3 minutes until the oil gets slightly warm and its viscosity becomes runnier, I then unscrew the filler cap, unscrew the drain bolt on the underside of the gearbox and drain the oil into a container fully. Once drained I tighten the drain plug, and fill the gearbox up with oil, I use 10W 40 but I'm sure there are others you can use. I am not sure about your gearbox oil capacity but my 250 is 0.8L or until the oil reaches the lower part of the window on the right hand side.

oh ok i understand. i was sort of confused when i read that i had to change oil cause i knew it was pre-mixed with the fuel. ok, so all i have to change is the gear oil then.

thanks very for your reply pal.

don't overtighten the drain plug-use a torque wrench or your best judgement with a short 3/8 drive ratchet.

Most definately! I fudged my threads up my over tightening it, I had to strip the whole engine down to have it tapped out to a bigger bore :ahhh: :|

Yes, just change the transmission oil.

Also, imo its worth pulling the right side engine cover off and checking that the PV govener is pressed together correctly. Many were improperly put together from the factory and allow the pv govener ball(s) to fly out into the trans when the engine is at high rpm = Not Good. My wife's 03' had this happen. fortunately the ball got lodged near the drainplug before it did any really bad damage. There was a TSB on the issue, but currently kawasaki is refusing to admit it is a big problem and will not pay for subsequent engine damage.

A frind of mine owns a Honda/Kawasaki dealership and he has his mechanics check this part on all their KX85/100's before they are sold. They have found several out of spec this year. I have pictures of the part, but this site thinks my photo hosting site is a porn site so it doesn't work here. If interested, go to www.p o s t w h o r e.biz (without the spaces), click on user galleries, then bikepilot, then dirt riding pics - you'll see some pics of the PV govener, the damaged engine case cover and such.

Other than this one small issue the bike has been very reliable and is great fun:)

good luck
