It opens an air passage to lean out the air/fuel mixture to aid in starting when hot. Kind of the opposite of a choke, which chokes off air to richen the fuel mixture for cold starting.
I rarely use mine on my 1998 YZ400F either. Unless the engine is realy hot, like lugging it through single track trails, etc, I can usualy just kick it over as is, sometimes even in gear.
Good to know guys, thanks for the info. On a different note. I finially took out the DRZ 400 and that thing pulls like a friggin train... I really love the torque/power. I love it already. It was already rejetted and has a stroker exhaust so it really rumbles. My KDX sounds like it's ready to cut something while the DRZ sounds like it want's to pull something. lol...Great bikes....Now it's the little ladies turn to join the fun.
