Measure the rod & post the dimensions, then tell us what model year your KDX is.

My motorcycle is a 2000 kdx 200. The little metal rod is like almost bell shaped It measures 3.1mm tall, 4.1mm wide at the top, 5.1mm At the base. It looks like it was sheared.

OK.

I have a noise in my engine - from the posts that i read I am lead to believe that it may be the governor shaft. Waht does this do and where should it be in it's proper position? Before it is sheared.

Does someone have the Kawasaki part number for this so that I can look in the manual and see what and where this is supposed to be?

Thanks.

if you go to www.buykawasaki.com you'll be able to find assembly drawings of your entire bike as well as OEM part numbers and loads of other cool stuff :)

Ok, here's the info on the "governor shaft" (all the following is for the 95-01 models).

If you go to www.buykawasaki.com and look at the "ENGINE COVERS" parts diagram, the part we are talking about is:

13236-1260 LEVER-COMP,GOVERNOR

It is a small rod attached to a metal bracket with two holes in it. IMHO, there's always been a bit of confusion because everyone calls it a "governor shaft", but Kawasaki reserves that name for the big shaft the goes from the right case to the cylinder head (13234-1101).

The shaft we are talking about is 0.78in long. It is the advancer arm that the KIPS centrifugal assembly uses to rotate the big governor shaft - the one that has the "claw" gear at the top near the cylinder head. You can't see the arm, but you can see where it goes by looking at CDAVE's graphic:

here are some pictures that TheMort posted recently of his damaged shaft. Notice the shear point.

One thing seems obvious - if all you found is the arm, be sure you keep looking until you find the bracket! (unless it's still bolted to the big governor shaft). Hope this helps :)
