Strick,
Could you post the snow depth report here. It seems I see in multipule treads people asking about the current conditions. Im following the weather there as closely as possible on the web, but it doesnt compare to hearing it first hand.

Thanks, Walt

I was out at my friends house in Spanish Springs last night and the snow they had in their yard was 2 - 8 inches deep and melting. The way things are going snow should not be a problem. Now the fog has been a total pain. :bang:

It is melting, but slowly. Not enough to make me load my bike and head over to Moonrocks, though. If any of you long-distance travellers have a go/no-go decision date, I'm willing to make a recon ride report.

D36-108A,
Thanks, that would be helpful. check your pm box

Strick,
Ill be wanting last minute input from you as well.

The bikes need to be in location either way. I can make a final go-nogo decision as late as Saturday the 12th. If the local people say the riding would be OK, even marginal on the 12th, were goin. If their opinion is that the riding would be no good, a waste of time, the bike haul is cancelled. Since I dont know the area, I have to rely on their opinion. I am not gonna drive 2200 miles each way to hang in a casino.

don't hang in a casino if moonrocks is snowy. ride somewhere else!

there's a race (109 miles or so) about 90 mins from reno that weekend. i havn't ridden there, but it seems to be a bit lower than moonrocks (it's east of pyramid lake) and should get less snow since it's further east. sounds so far like the race is a go.

Been watching the weather reports for Reno, NV.

And it's warming up..... yippee!

They're showing sunny, high 40's/low 50s out for next ten days -- so it looks like it's trending in the right direction finally!

:yeehaw:

Can't wait....

I was just at Moonrocks a few hours ago, just looking from my truck. Much more snow than I expected. The staging area is still covered with several inches. The road up is developing muddy rain ruts and some 2WD vehicles may not get through. The road past the staging area is fully covered in snow. I couldn't really see the trails but you can bet they are covered. Some of the south-facing trails may be in better shape.

Lots of life struggles right now - sorry for my lack of input.

I have had two knee surgeries (same knee) in 13 days. My 88 yo father is failing, and we will be losing him within a few days.

5" of snow in my front yard, temps in low 40's for the last week.

I got off the phone with Tahoerider just a couple of hours ago, and he said the weather is warming up, and he would take a drive out there this coming weekend. We know that the snow is there, and that it's around 4-8 inches. BUT, with the warmer temps, this should melt off in the valley and the staging area. But, I would expect the snow to still be there at the higher elevations. Thats what makes it FUN!!!! After talking to Kevin, I felt ALOT better about the conditions out there. So long as they don't get another dumping on, we should be cool! We were going to touch base again at the end of the week to see how things were progressing in the MELTING ARENA!
Walt, pack your bag, this trip is gonna work out!!!!!

The snow is melting guys, just not as quick as we would like. There is no snow forcast. I we would hit our average temps between now and then, we would have to deal with dust - just kidding!

Everything will be fine.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RENO NV
945 PM PST SAT FEB 5 2005

.UPDATE...
NO UPDATES PLANNED THIS EVENING. FIRST OF TWO SHORTWAVES WAS MOVING
INTO THE AREA LATE THIS EVENING WITH A DRAMATIC INCREASE IN MID AND
HIGH LEVEL MOISTURE. 06/00Z KREV SOUNDING SHOWED A NEARLY SATURATED
PROFILE BETWEEN H5-H3 AND FORECAST MODEL SOUNDINGS WERE IN COMPLETE
AGREEMENT THAT THE DRY LAYER BELOW THIS WOULD MOISTEN OVERNIGHT.
THUS NOT TOO CONFIDENT THAT FREEZING FOG WILL BE WIDESPREAD ENOUGH
TO WARRANT CURRENT ADVISORY. THERE WILL BE SOME BREAKING IN THE
CLOUDS BEHIND THIS SHORTWAVE AFTER 14Z SUNDAY MORNING SO THAT SOME
FREEZING FOG MAY DEVELOP. HOWEVER GREATLY WEAKENED INVERSION UNDER
TROUGH WILL MAKE FOG SHORTLIVED IF IT DOES MATERIALIZE WITH PERHAPS
A LOW STRATUS DECK HANGING ON IN THE CARSON AND HUMBOLDT SINKS. WILL
ALLOW MORE TIME TO MONITOR TRENDS OVERNIGHT AND SEE IF THE ADVISORY
CAN BE PULLED WITH THE MORNING PACKAGE. OTHERWISE THIS FIRST SYSTEM
IS EXPECTED TO WEAKEN AS IT MOVES ACROSS THE GREAT BASIN SUNDAY.
UPSTREAM SYSTEM STILL FORECAST TO DROP ACROSS AREA SUNDAY NIGHT WITH
MODELS CONTINUING TO SHOW A MORE EASTERLY TRACK WITH SYSTEM. THE ETA
IS THE WETTEST SOLUTION AND BRINGS NEARLY ONE HALF INCH OF QPF TO
THE HIGH SIERRA AROUND TAHOE WITH LESSER AMOUNTS ELSEWHERE. HOHMANN

.SHORT TERM...EARLIER DISCUSSION
TWO UPSTREAM SHORT WAVES WILL MOVE THROUGH THE AREA OVER THE NEXT 36
HOURS. THE SECOND WAVE WHICH COMES THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT SHOULD
FINALLY SCOUR OUT THE VALLEYS AND GET RID OF THE FOG AND HAZE. THE
FIRST IS NEAR 40N 130W WILL MOVE INLAND TONIGHT...AND HAVE LITTLE
EFFECT ON THE VALLEY INVERSIONS...ESPECIALLY IN ZONES 1 AND 4 WHERE
THEY ARE STRONGEST. HOWEVER SOME VERTICAL MOTION AND ADDITIONAL
COOLING ALOFT SHOULD BREAK UP THE SHALLOW INVERSIONS IN ZONES 3...5
AND 71. THEREFORE ONLY HAVE EXTENDED THE FREEZING FOG ADVISORY FOR
ZONES 1 AND 4. WILL LEAVE SOME PATCHY FOG WORDING FOR ZONES 3...5
AND 71 AS NOT ALL THE INVERSIONS WILL GET MIXED OUT.

THE SECOND WAVE WILL GET HERE ON SUNDAY NIGHT AND LOOKS MUCH LESS
IMPRESSIVE  THAN IT DID IN YESTERDAY RUNS. THE TRACK IS FARTHER EAST
WITH THE MAIN UPPER LOW PASSING FROM EASTERN OREGON INTO CENTRAL
NEVADA. BEST CHANCE FOR SNOW IS IN ZONES 4 AND 5...WITH
ACCUMULATIONS NEAR OR JUST BELOW SNOW ADVISORY CRITERIA. IT IS
POSSIBLE THE SIERRA AND RENO-CARSON AREA MAY GET NOTHING  FROM THIS
SYSTEM IF THE TRACK REMAINS OVER CENTRAL NEVADA. DRYER AND WARMER
CONDITIONS WITH NO VALLEY INVERSIONS FOR MONDAY AND TUESDAY. BRONG

.LONG TERM...WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY...
AN UPPER TROUGH IS PROGGED TO MOVE INTO THE CENTRAL SIERRA AND
WESTERN NEVADA ON WEDNESDAY. THE GFS AND ECMWF ARE SLIGHTLY FASTER
WITH THIS SYSTEM THAN THE CANADIAN AND NOGAPS ARE. THE NOGAPS
HOWEVER INDICATES A DEEPER TROUGH THAN DO THE OTHER THREE MODELS.
THE GFS...EURO AND NOGAPS ALL BRING THE UPPER TROUGH THROUGH THE
REGION ON THURSDAY. THE CANADIAN IS SLIGHTLY SLOWER. LOW LEVEL
MOISTURE IS LACKING ON THURSDAY SO THE MAIN THING WE WILL SEE IS
INCREASING CLOUDINESS AS THE SYSTEM MOVES THROUGH. THE GFS BRINGS A
JET MAX THROUGH NRN CA/SRN ORE FRIDAY NIGHT. THE KREV CWFA WOULD BE
ON THE ANTICYCLONIC SIDE OF THE JET MAX SO THIS WOULD HELP TO
SUPPRESS ANY UVV. THE MAIN EFFECT FROM THIS FEATURE WILL BE AN
INCREASE IN WIND SPEEDS IN OUR NORTHERN ZONES. O'HARA
