My son is coming off an XR100. What 80 2-stroke would have the smoothest powerband? He rides 90% woods and wants to start racing H.S. Thanks in advance.

the rm85 has the mildiest hit. next is the kx 85 then c r80 then yz85.

I have a cr 80 and at first the hit scared me, but now I'm used to it (i came off an xr80)

Well, my guess would be the JR80 has the mildest hit, but this is no MX bike either, more fun than anything else.

KX85 would probably be the way to go.

How old is your boy, also how big is he - if he is big enough, why not look at a KDX200 for HS and trails - would be a bike which would last him for many years.

A KX100 wiyh flywheel weight may also be an option. Other enduro options may be the Gas Gas 125 EC or KTM125 exc

I would agree with the RM85 then the KX85 because of the power valves make them hit less, but my son's YZ85 while it seems to have more top end then his friend's CR80, it also seems to have less hit. Probably because it has more mid-range power than the CR80.
My son came off an XR100, and had no problem adapting to the YZ85.

Another vote for the KX and RM. Both have smooth power (from bottom to top). I have seen quite a few KX 80 and 100's set up for woods riding.

I've only ridden the CR and RM. Your boy would probably be hating the CR, coming from an XR 100. The RM engine is excellent (once properly jetted). It has a little less top end than the CR, but way more low end. It's smooth and easy to ride. I'd love my RM 125 to have the exact same powerband.

The KX's seem to be VERY popular around here for HS followed by the YZ's & RM's with only a very few on CR's. Beefed up XR100's seem to be making some inroads as well as several TTR's.

Heck, at his height - you might want to consider a KX 100 (that is if there is a class it would fit in for H.S.) He would fit the bike like a glove (it's the same exact thing as the KX 85 except the tires are 2 inches larger and the displacement is 105cc). Sounds like he might outgrow an 80 pretty quick (I'm 5'5" and WAY cramped on an 80). The KX 100 has a smooth powerband and nice low end power. And with a flywheel weight - you could make it a great little woods bike.

if you get him an 80 either get the cr80expert or the kx100

I'm 5,5 and not cramped on my regular cr80. I just rotated the bars forward a little.

I would give up on the rm80/85
It is the smoothest hitting bike but it is also the slowest

There is no need to say comments like this. We aren't having a battle about which bike is fastest. And yzf was asking about the smoothest powerband, anyways. The RM 80 is a great bike - I would definately consider it.

And just a little "fact" for dell30rb since you know which bike is the "best". Here is the bike breakdown of the 40 man gate at Loretta Lynn's (Amateur Motocross National) in the 12-13 85cc STOCK class - which is the oldest 85 stock bracket at the national.

KAW - 17
SUZ - 13
YAM - 8
HON - 2

The seat to peg to handle bar relationship between CR80 to a CR80E, and between the KX85 to the KX100, are the same. The only difference is the wheel size (and of coures engine bore on the KX) so when riding, if a person was cramped on the CR80 or KX85 they would also be cramped on the CR80E or KX100. My son didn't like the KX100/85 because the handle bars are closer to the seat and both bikes felt smaller to him than any of the other minis. He is 5'2", but has long legs for his height, and liked the size of the YZ best. But at that time the RM had not been released. Really at 5'5" your son is bordeline on moving up to a 125 depending on his ability. My son has at times rode my 125 but won't go far with it because he knows he wouldn't be able to pick it up and start it if he dropped it or stalled it.

My son rides a 2002 KX100 - reeds, pipe and handguards make it a great HS bike. We didn't even put a flywheel weight on it. The bigger wheels and displacement make it a much better off-road bike than the 85.

Sounds like you need to try out a Gas Gas Pampera 250/280 - this bike will knock your socks off :)

Nikki, don't forget that contingency and support play a big part in what lines up at Lorettas. And just a little "fact" for dell30rb since you know which bike is the "best".

Here's the payout for the 80cc 12-13 stock class at Loretta's (very similar to '01):

Honda - 1,000/750/650/550/450/350/250/200/150/75
Yamaha - 1,000/700/600/500/400/300/200/150/100/50
Suzuki - 600/400/350/300/250/200/150/100/75/50
Kawasaki - 600/400/250/200/175/150/125/100/75/50

Who pay's the best - Honda. And not to mention that Honda is the only one who uses a credit card for payment so you can buy basically anything with your winnings. Yamaha pays the 2nd best. Then there is a BIG gap to Suzuki and Kawasaki. Now... seeing this - look at the bikes that were on the line:

KAW - 17
SUZ - 13
YAM - 8
HON - 2

I have never seen Honda or Yamaha supporting riders at the bigger races out
here in SoCal (GFI, CMC,Mammoth). I have heard that Honda is supposed to be stepping it up this year. You can break at a race with Suzuki or Kawasaki there and they will do everything they can to get you back out there. With Honda and Yamaha you are on your own. Thats why Team Green is so popular. There have been a couple letters lately in Cycle News thanking these guys for there help. They are regular riders on KX's, not supported riders. I think they do a great job with support.
Oh yea, as far as the topic goes , my son has a YZ 85. I would definitly recommend the RM or KX to someone looking for a mild hitting bike. The are much easier to ride than the YZ or CR.
