'91 Kawasaki KDX 250?

I've had riding buddies with a '99 KTM300Exc and a '06 WR450, and the '99 300 KTM will demolish a stock '06 WR450, anytime, anywhere. My friend with the '06 WR450 drools over my dialed in, much lighter '02 KTM 250 Exc with Novation suspension and Scotts 18mm triple clamps. If I was crazy enough to trade, he would in a heart beat.

Seriously, I spent some time and $ setting up a dual sported '91 KDX250, and it would out perform a stock WR450 on 99% of the trails I ride.

What features of the Wr450 are you considering?

Peak Power? Any 250 two stroke will be comparable

Electric start? KTM makes some electric start two strokes, not sure if anyone else does

Headlight? Hmmmm....

Kickstand? You can add aftermarket kickstands to most bikes.

Heavier? I can sell you lead brick you can bolt to the bike.....

there is no equivilent, hardly comparible but as others have said 250's woud have no problem,

the advantage of the 4t is when your in open areas at high speeds for long periods

my wr250f is going bye bye it lost out to my kdx and kx125 in the elimination rounds...too heavy ,too stiff and too tall ..

There is no 2-stroke equivalent. Four strokes are superior in every possible way. Sorry.

Assclown fits you well. Don't you have some valves to adjust or cam chains to replace instead of hanging out in the cool-bike forum? :nener:

Yamaha made a WR250 from 89-98?? Believe that was the last year. YZ 2 stroke with a WR gearbox, larger tank, lights and few other mods. The last few years of those bikes are some of the most desireable bikes for what you are after.

well you have 2 bikes that would fair well already..spend a little time setting up your kdx200 and your IT200 either one would lose him in the woods...you could have rest breaks while waiting for him. But if your going to cross a field or go down a fire road don't wait :nener:

I currently have three 2006 YZ250's in my house. I ride all tight gnarley woods, and have a couple of different set-ups. The YZ250 (or Service YZ300,) is a great base for a woods bike, but you'll have to do some work to optimize it. Don't hesitate, just understand.

If you need to buy something 'ready to ride' in the woods, spend the extra $$$ for a new KTM 250/300 EXC. With or without E-start. Great bikes, but you'll pay more.

Either way, you'll spend a lot less on maintenance on a 2-T than you did on your WR. And have a lot of fun, to boot!

Good luck!!

Pretty much the only difference between the XC and EXC is the lights and such on the EXC. If you're considering trying to make it street legal, definitely the EXC. Otherwise the XC will be fine.

How many 250 2ts have wide range gearing for the woods? As mentioned, the 98 and prior WR250...other than that, you are left with the KTM 250 EXC, which, I will admit, is a good trail bike. The KDX 200/220 keeping up with a WR450? Did you stick a banana in the tailpipe of the 450 and modify the KDX? Ive ridden both and I dont see how that is possible. You can talk about weight all day...there is no comparison

As I said, you have to work on the YZ to get what you want out of it.

That said, the WR400/426 wide-range transmission can be installed in the YZ250, either whole, or part. (Matching gears.)

Cost is minimal, compared to the difference in bike prices. The YZ is purported to handle better, and have superior suspension components. (Especially after '06)

In my case, it comes down to what you want. A good rider can, and will win or excel on either.

In the end, set-up skills and rider ability will trump this debate. Either bike can, has, and will, win races.

I have no problem keeping up with a good rider on a yz450f in the woods on my KDX200, and when the trails get tight he can try and keep up with me instead. I don't see the WR being that much harder to beat. Any 200+ 2t should be a fair match with a competent rider onboard. I agree, the wr250 would be a good choice for such an effort. Great bike! A yz250 will do fine as well. RMZ250, kdx250, kdx200, ktm200, ktm300, etc etc and yada yada. For a torque monster 2 stroke trail bike, the KTM 300 is incredible.
If you really wanna make him look like a girl, check out the Maico 320 or 500.

Very tunable powerband, without much expense. Pro-Moto Billet kickstand is excellent. WR426 wide-ratio trans will fit. Lighting coils available. One of the best suspensions you can buy, O.E.M. Drawback is you have to add the things you need. Great overall bike, IMHO.

KTM EXC 250 or 300 comes with or without electrc start, comes with most of the stuff you have to add to the Yamaha, but costs more.

KTM EXC 200 is lighter, but less powerful. Easy to ride, and handles great. Suprises a lot of people!

Gas-Gas 250 is a 6 speed and has gotten some nice reviews. Small dealer network, a bit costly.
