01 200 EXC Cold Starting problem

I have a question to all those that have a 01 200 EXC. I bought my 200 last March and I have to say its a blast to ride. However, every since my first ride the bike has been difficult to start when cold. Once warm it starts like any two-stroke but that first start of the day is always a pain in the <butt>. Just Saturday I went riding and sure enough if was a pain. I kick it with the choke on, gas on, etc.. until I get a little tired. Then stop and continue getting dressed. About 5 or so minutes later I come back and continue to kick. Usually it will start this time after several kicks. I re-jetted the bike but only slightly to lean it out.

Has anyone had a similar problem?

Thanks....

1. Turn the fuel on.
2. Lay the bike WAY over on it's left side until fuel runs out of the carb overflow tubes.
3. Stand the bike back up.
4. Now try starting it with the choke on.

The bike is probably not getting enough gas through the choke circuit. The above is an old trick that works well with most 2-strokes.

Hope this helps.

Something else that works for me.

Give it 2-3 slow, "priming" kicks then kick it like you mean it. This has been almost foolproof for me. I also had my friend start doing this on his 99 RM250 that was giving him fits starting and he also has had success with it.
Hope this helps.:)

Just noticed your location. What part of the state are you in?

Might also check the float adjustment.

Thanks for the feedback. I had to adjust my float a while back. I did a practice lap before a race and when I got back to the truck gas was pooring out of the overflow. But the starting problem was before and after this issue so I didnt think that float was the problem.

I am in St. Louis...ride down at Flat River alot. Where do you ride?

I'm on Missouri's "West Coast" LOL! I'll shoot you an Email if we have any more rides in Columbia. We are going to White Rock on 12/1-2 if you are interested. Details in the "Places to Ride" forum.

o ya...I have fouled several plugs since I got the bike. Not sure what is considered "normal" with plug fouling. Two weeks ago I went riding with a brand new plug. Rode about 20 miles and came in for a break. When we left for a second ride my plug fouled a 100 yards from the truck. Sometimes I wonder....but I have tried starting it cold with a new plug and it was still a hard to start.

It sounds like your bike is running pretty rich. The KTM manual has a very good jetting chart in the back that could help you out...Do you have aftermarket pipe or reeds....this would change the jetting from that chart...But a bone stock bike goes off of that chart pretty darn good.

my '00 has yet to foul a plug, & my '98 never fouled 1, either. sounds like you are still jetted a little rich.

Thanks Layton

Layton:

I just tried your idea and it worked like a charm. Cold bike started on the second kick...Thanks a ton...

:)

Just a Thought:

I think Patman might be on to something with the float idea, too. If your float is sticking (especially if it is happening intermittantly) it will give you fits. I would open it up and make sure everything is moving freely in there and that the needle is seating correctly (as much as I hate doing it!).

ExC Rocket,

Glad to help. Like I said, many bikes are a little lean on the choke circuit and basicly this just floods the bike with a little raw fuel. If there is a fix for the choke circuit, I don't know about it and don't really care. After all, leaning the bike over only takes a couple of seconds and then she pops right off.

When the temps get really cold here in Illinois that is about the only way you can get many bikes to start.:)
