Final planning for the 2004 Furnace Hare Scramble is taking place . This is the second year for the event, last year we had 52 women cross country racers and 180 youth racers. We expect 300 total racers this year, making it the largest youth/women event on the west coast (if not the entire country).

A few changes for 2004:
*Slightly longer course in the "non-rocky" section of the park around Hangtown MX, less technical and around 5 miles long.
*Computerized/transponder real time scoring.
*Grass track and mud hole!
*More women classes.
*An unclassified "race" where riders - especially beginner racers, can do 1 lap of the track early in the morning before the official races begin.
*Camping on Saturday night - we are lining up a band for entertainment as well.
*1 hour skills course for women racers on Saturday - perhaps starts, etc. We will have a couple of the top racers on hand for this free clinic.

Lots more to come... we will have the race flyer and entry form up in a week or so.

Hope to see you there!

Hi Loco,
I've forgotten what the date was for last years? Was a furnace for sure, but a great, really well put on event.

Looking forward to it this year! I recall having to be out of town on business last year and could not attend. I did get to see the video footage that Pierre took of Jennifer and The Ant. Others were in the footage as well! Woo hooo! Looked like a very HOT day!

Rats, that's Randy's son's wedding date. We're kinda expected to be there.

Its good they're scheduling it earlier this year, didn't get going til noon as I recall last year, and for a Pacific NW girl like me it was REALLY hot! But still fun.

We have a beginner women's class - you need to be a decent rider but for most of the riders last year it was their first race. We wanted to create a situation where ladies could experience their first race experience was fun so we cut out a couple of tough sections. This year the course will not be technically difficult, unless you are going really fast!

The course is about 5 miles long, a regular cross country track around the Prairie City OHV park - we use a part of the mx track (about 1/2 mile) but no jumps. Riders will probably do about 3-4 laps all together.

Camping will be basically in the main staging area, but you can camp anywhere in the park. We have the band signed for Saturday evening - should be fun. We have also continue to add cool contingency prizes, recently from Honda, Cycle Gear and Metzger Action Sports. Also, many of the pre-entries have been for the women's classes!

Two quick updates...

The forecast is now for the low 70's - perfect conditions (it's hard to believe that it will be 30 degrees cooer than last year).

The Women's National Hare Scramble and GNCC champion will be giving a seminar/discussion from 3-4pm on Saturday. Topic: race strategy in Hare Scrambles. This is a rare opportunity to hear from one of the best racers in the country!

Hope to see you there.

Jennifer and I are leaving for Prairie City right now. Weather looks nice and cool, will be great for the race. Hopefully we'll see some of you this afternoon there...
