Heh... I just love the threads where brand X guy jumps into brand Y thread and starts trying to cause trouble. ;)

When evaluating the merits of one machine, people are naturally going to use the bikes with which they have experience as their point of reference. I personally am interested in hearing how the '05 CR compares to earlier models.

Go pee in someone else's Cheerios, Bruce.

I thought that's what I was trying to do, but I can see Bruces point - I'm sure CR guys are the only ones to soup up their bikes ....... sure seems like I see a lot of aftermarket parts for othe makes though.
I think the '05 is finally a step forward from th '01 where as the '02 - '04, in my opinion were a step back.

I think you did a great job and I am very interested in the differences also.

I don't think Bruce has a point :)

Thanks for the info oldfrt613. I think I will be sticking with the 01 for a while. At my level I think it will be fine. I know the motor is more than enough for me and the chassie seems decent.

I'd love a bit more info on the offset tripple clamps - are these the same ones that were popular for the CRF450 back then? Any thoughts on mounting 05 forks on an 01 (sometimes see them cheep on that auction site....). Any major suspension improvements from 01 to 05?

I still have a set of red Applied 22mm offset clamps for the '01. It seemed to help quite a bit on flat turns. I ran the same set on my '97, and they fit my '05, but I sprung for a new set anyway ( suppose to be lighter ). A set of '05 forks accomplish the same thing. If your not noticing bottoming problems then there is probably no advantage to updating your suspension, unless you can find forks cheaper than clamps. I know there is a length difference between the two. I'll see if I can get a hold of my old '01 and let you know the difference. Unless you actively race, I don't think you'll see much improvement. The '01 is a great bike once the jetting is cleaned up.

I would love to ride an 05 CR250 to check it out. Unfortunately I STILL have not seen one in the flesh.

My buddy bought his 04' last year for $3,700...Varner mods brought it to $4,200...I don't think you'll be finding anything that good for that price off the showroom floor. I had mine sent to me in the crate for $4,200 OTD so the mods are still cheaper.

My buddy's 04' is now also sporting works showa supension thanks to the lack of interest and low prices for CR's...

bclapham , you really have a problem with anyone who enjoys their cr huh?? you must be getting your arse handed to you week after week by someone on a cr :nener:
i tell you what , me and my garbage cr have never ever even came close to having an rm be able to keep up let alone beat me. i rode a 2005 rm250 it was a dog thought i was on a glorified 125, to use your word it was a roach LOL

Bruce - Your observations regarding the dollars some folks have into their CRs are maybe valid for the guy changing his bike every season. However, many of us are riding equipment several years old, and I run my motocross bikes 4 to 5 years before trading for a new model. I usually modify the motors in the first year of ownership and I'll do so regardless of whether it's a CR, YZ, whatever.. Fact is, ALL stock 250s feel tardy at a mile above sea-level.

And anyone that concerned with resale value ought to look for a new hobby. Five year old two-strokes sell for pennies on the dollar regardless of whether they're yellow or red.

Deeeeeerrrrr....What you said would might have meaning if we paid nearly 6g's ...The price we paid more than makes up the difference...It's pretty much proportionate to someone buying theirs for $6,300 :nener: and selling it below 5 G's...Personally, I wouldn't pay in the 4's for a used bike.

Not to mention the money we save on nonsensical repairs :)

Bruce's furry little hooves and bad TROLL complextion are showing yet again...dude are trolls really afraid of cattle gates and bridges?

I don't get it, whenever a RM thread comes up, you don't see an troll army of one show up and bash the RM owners for enjoying their machine, yet for most all CR threads that pop up, you can count on Bruce to stick his little horned head in. Get over the CR's already

Yeah, I'm feeling saucy today, I've been behaved for quite awhile now...

Thanks again for the info oldfrt613, I'm not haveing any bottoming problems as I weigh 155lbs and mostly ride harescrambles. I have not done any serious racing since the end of the year 2000 season. I started college in the fall of 00 and didn't have the time or money, I've since graduated, got a job, wife and house and still have no time or money, but am back to riding though not as often or seriously as I would like. I'll keep my eyes open for a set of 22mm clamps or 05 forks. I really appreciate the info and let me know if you ever want to sell the 22mm clamps you had on your 01:)

My response would be that at least you can sell a used CR.

As we all know, you can't give away a used RM.

I don't think you are an a-hole Bruce...I always look forward to your stuff. We sure don't all have to agree on bikes, after all it would be pretty boring to have the tracks and trails filled w/ all one bike color...heck I've even been known to ride a KX from time to time

I think that Honda took a step backward with the delivery of the '04 which was completely anaemic off the bottom.

how's the top-end? i have a chance to buy a new, leftover '04 cr 250 for $3300. i never liked torquey or bottom-end motors. if the top is good on this model, i may go ahead and buy it.
