'05 CR250R ...... a motor at last

had every CR250 from 1997 to 2004, loved them... got the hang of the finicky jetting, then I rode a RM250, liked it better... for 2005 that is my bike.

Still prefer the honda fit and feel, but the turning, motor and throttle response of the RM beats the CR in my book. I thought the RM would not be as durable, but so far it is as good or better.

Resale... we will see, the RM came with lots of spares(top end , gaskets levers etc) and I got it way cheaper then a CR ($900) Cr came with a spoke wrench. To top it off the RM pays contingency in my series.

So add it all up, I think it will work out ok.

Typically, all the 2 strokes are being heavily discounted, with left over CR's being available at really great prices. I'm surprised you couldn't find a CR in the same price range.

As for resale, there's a 2004 RM250 in great shape in TX on bGay that is at $1375 with less than 9 hours to go. I've seen scores of them not even get a bid.

That's a beating in my book.

If you keep it several years then it becomes a wash since they'll all bottom out around the same price.

What matters is you got something you like.

That's a very generous offer, Bruce. I run pre-printed backgrounds but I'm sure one of the other guys will be happy to take them from you. :cool:

Heh.. Well, the top is better than the bottom, but I still found the '03 to have the better motor of the '02-'04.

Seems like a reasonable deal, but I think you could find a little lower.

i told you before BClapham , getting as well as giving a little shuut is what i joined this place for , ive got a list of people i look for replies to threads for my entertainment dollar and you are at the near top of it :boss: my personal favorites are 2stroke 4 stroke brawls . i wish you would get in on more of the JBS .......RC jargon.......that would be entertainment :nod: on that note if im ever in your neck of the woods id love to priviledge you with some cr dust for your digestive tract enjoyment

Speaking of 4-strokes, I went to the races a few weeks back up in Southwick, MA. I haven't been in awhile up there and last time I was there all you heard was the beautiful pinging of 2-strokes. Well when I got up there it sounded like a bunch of lawnmowers on steroids ripping around. I have nothing against 4-poppers, I owned one, but to me, there's nothing like the sound of 40 2-strokes tearin a$$ around the track.

Keep up the sh!t BC, I enjoy watching the bickering!!! We need a good ball buster.

Hmm.. I guess you're right. I was just not particularly enamored with the '04, but 33 is still a good price for a two year old bike with zero hours on it.

today, i talked to a guy that works at one of the local honda shops. he said they bought out all the other dealers leftover '04 cr250's and sold them for $2995. he said they went like hotcakes.

Really all bikes have their strong points....

I saw a 1987 KX125 at the track the other day, in very good condition, and I go up to the guy and ask him the details about the bike...He races 4 classes a week since he bought in 87'...Get this........He did a top end job on it......once.......about 3 years ago and that's it....One job in 18 years.....IMHO that's a poor maintenance schedule but it's impressive that the motor has had no failure of any kind...Not what I expected for an 80's KX with such a packed race schedule.

Iv'e had almost every year CR since 98. My current one is an 04 which as it sits I'm happy with, but I was not happy with the stock motor. I pulled the motor out of my 01 and stuffed it into the 04. It has (IMO) the last good Honda motor with the latest frame/suspension, I guess the best of both worlds you could say. I'm now looking for a new bike and the 05 and 06 RM's are looking really good to me. Here are some pics of my 04 with the 01 motor.

Almost everything lines up perfectly. The front motor mount needs to be modified slightly and you will need to fabricate some new headstays. The 00-01 pipe bolts up perfectly, but you will need to use an 02-05 silencer. If you need some more info/pictures drop me a line and I'd be happy to help.

For the 04 with the 01 engine - did the engine performance change from the swap - the difference being I'm assuming you're running the 04 airbox.

A little late to the show, but here's my .02 on the 05 CR250.

Great motor; pretty strong down low (stronger on the bottom than my old '00 CR) but perhaps not as strong just off idle as a YZ or RM. Ferocious mid and top -- easily the fastest stock 250 I've ridden (and I've been riding MXers for over 20 years). When this thing comes on the pipe, you'd better be pointed in the right direction. Jetting on mine was right on for 500 feet above sea level; needs to be leaned a bit for the summer, of course. The bike makes some noises but nothing alarming except for some light detonation when I first got it. The jetting was so crisp I didn't want to change that to eliminate the pinging, so I went to a 50/50 mix of pump gas and C12 that cured the pinging and added some more throttle response. Overall, an excellent MX motor.

As far as handling, the bike rocks. The 3rd Gen frame is much better than the 2nd Gen. Lighter, better handling and skinnier between the legs. The front sticks better in turns and really gives you a lot of confidence. The back is much better on bumpy sweepers -- it sticks. Overall, the bike really gives you confidence. I'm still exploring what its limits really are.

Suspension is perfect in front -- I've made no changes at all. You can tell Honda has made a real effort to keep the forks from diving in whoops and entering bumpy turns. Braking bumps don't exist anymore! The shock is very good; I might tinker with it or send it to Factory Connection this winter to eliminate a trace of harshness on square-edged acceleration bumps on hardpack tracks. Then again, backing out HS compression a bit might eliminate the last of this issue.

Overall, I've found the bike to be an excellent MXer and it has exceeded my expectations. I'd buy another in a minute.

A friend rode a 05 cr250 with a fatty pipe today-he expressed the same comments as you, a reasonable bottom but a very strong mid to top and he commented on how hard it was to keep straight as the track was loose and dry.

Glad someone had an insight on a basically stock '05. I modified mine right off. If you think the stock motor runs good, wait till you start tinkering. I came off a TMR '01 which I thought was great. As far as suspension I weigh 155 lbs. I imediately had to send suspension off because I was way overjumping obsticles. Factory Connection did a good job getting her settled down. I think you'll find the off idle performance is a jetting issue. I purchase a JD jetting kit - it came with a 32.5 pilot, I settled on the 35 -realy helps off idle. The needle was substantally leaner. I stated a thread on the Wiseco GP piston. Planning on installing it after this weekend. It really picked up the bottom end on the '01.

Ok, I installed the GP piston last night. Most obvious difference is the cavity around the wrist pin. The new piston has approximately 8mm hole instead of cavity. May affect how the tranfer ports work. Skirt is slightly different. Wrist pin height is the same as stock. I'll get her broke in and let you know if there is any appriciable power difference.

Thanks. Sounds like you've ridden yours quite a bit. What kind of life are you getting out of piston and ring? I've yet to change mine; I have only about 10 hours on the bike, about 3-4 of which were break-in and practice riding.

Did yours ping at all or did you go straight to the JD needle out of the box? I've been told the needle eliminates the pinging and makes the bike pull a bit stronger in the bottom and middle.

I'd also love to hear more of your comments on the GP for the 01 CR. I still have the stock piston in mine but will be due for replacement before long. Lastly, the bike came with a spare head that has been shaved down .020". Any thoughts on running this head?

I am glad I found this. I bought my new 05 CR250 in March. I live about 1500 feet in elevation. I have been having some problems with my jetting. My motor makes a knocking noise when I get on the gas real hard. I leaned it out from stock but I think I went to far. For all of you that are riding the 05 CR could you tell me what you are running jetting wise. Other than that the CR is really strong running bike. I put the FMF SST Pipe on with the Titanium 2 silencer. I personally love this bike. It does have some wicked power in the mid to top but I put a 9oz fly wheel weight on it and it smooths it out alot. :)

Check out some of the other threads about the SST pipe...That particular exhaust seems to make the engine detonate...

Get some good quality VP race gas, then jet it. Instant and simple "knock-be-gone" formula....You will most likely get rid of the knock by just switching to good fuel.
