I am actually posting this for my 14yr. old brother-in-law. He is ready to move up to an adult size bike following his CFR150.

size: 5'6" 175 lbs.

riding style: aggressive trail rider, no racing now or in the future, very athletic football player. 4 years experience trail riding. will probably only ride a total of 10 times a year if that. went from crf100 to crf150 now ready for ?

Mechanican: wont be doing any wrenching on bike.

He has been riding a ttr250 lately and a KDX200 and is more comfortable on the 4 stroke.

He looks to me like he needs more bike than the ttr250 has, and since he will keep growing we want a bike that will be good for him 3-4 years from now as well.

My thoughts were a wr250 or yzf250. Maybe a xr400, but I dont know how much weight difference there is between the ttr250 and an xr400. He is comfortable with the weight of the ttr250, so maybe the extra lbs. on an xr400 wont bother him too much and will be fine a couple of years from now.

Any thoughts? I appreciate the help. Thanks.

I think a XR400 would do the trick but a used XR350 would also be good. All depending on how much you have to spend i would say buy a KTM 200EXC or Yamaha WR250F. The 200 would be nice because its simple to work on and has less matinece cost. The WR250F would also be good because he would be used to a 4 stroke power band and the aftermarket is good.

yeah, I forgot to mention his budget is $2500. He did ride my KTM 200exc, but it was a little too pipey for him. I think he should stick with a 4-stroke.

yeah, I was thinking along the lines of an xr400, and could get a nice one for $2500. I wonder what the weight difference between a xr250 and xr400 is?

I am 14 i had a pw50, pw80, ttr125 and i rode my dads ttr225 and now i have jumped to a yz250f. I was in the same situation u were a few weeks ago with a decision from a trail bike a two stroke or a racing four stroke. My final decision was the yz250f because i could ride it on the track and trail ride it without any problems. I ride 80% trails and about 10% track and for either riding styles this is the bike to get.
