Motor will fire and run but will not stay running for more than a few seconds, and when it does run we are pretty sure it wants to idle out of control for a little bit. Also, after it dies and we try to restart it there is a pretty major backfire issue that we can feel pushing back on the kickstart. When it does fire, it fires quite readily with minor input to the kickstart. This bike was a barnfind so we are starting from scratch. Carb was cleaned and rebuilt and we were using new, clean fuel and fuel lines. Any help would be appreciated

Check both ignition timing and also make sure the intake rotary valve is also sealing correctly. Start there. Is there excessive blowback through the carb when trying to start or during running? Are the points adjusted correctly and the condenser is not defective?

Do you know how to see if the rotary valve is sealing? Or how fix it if it wasn't? Thanks.
Leak down test. The rotary disc is designed to seal best when the piston is on the down stroke (pressure increase in crank chamber) and when on the up stroke (crank chamber in vacuum state). The pressure and vacuum push or pull the disc up against its accompanied Oring on either side of the disc. Because of this during the leak test it has to be done using pressure and then using vacuum and see the loss either way. Most times I've seen issues with the rotary intake its either ignition timing(points) issue or just badly worn rings causing excessive blowby that actually lights off the accompanying air/fuel charge in the crank chamber.
