1980 yz 250 clutch basket question

Hi I need a new clutch basket. could anyone tell me what other bikes (years & models) use the same clutch basket as a 1980 yz250. I found a 1980 yz465 clutch basket it looks the same as mine are they??? my 1980 yz250 has the six speed tranny where as the 465 has a 5 speed I do not know if that has anything to do with thier interchangeability or not.

I dont think it is interchangeable with a 465 for the fact the teeth on the basket could not hold as many steels and friction polates. Unless, how many plates are in your clutch.

mine has 5 steel plates and 6 friction plates

Years ago a friend of mine had a 80 yz250 that needed a clutch basket. He bought a clutch from a yz490 at the boneyard. The guys at the boneyard said it would work and it worked just fine so a yz465 should work too. I think he used the complete assembly so it still might not be right if you use just the basket.

It will work if you have 5 steels and 6 friction plates.

thanks for the info. I'll look for a 465 or 490 clutch if I cannot find one from a 250. any idea how many years ahead I can go with the 490 clutch assy to fit my 1980 yz250?

The closest fiche I could find to look up was 1984. That year, the 250 and 490 did indeed use the same clutch
