Just picked up a pretty clean '84 cr500.......It has low compression so i'm guessing it will need at least a new topend. Does anyone have any background info. working on this bike? How hard will it be to find a piston kit? Doing searches, looks like it wasn't a very good model and had pinging issues. I'll post a pic if anyone is interested...... :ride:

And ask Wiseco. They make pistons for damn near anything. Bored too. Putting a Wiseco in an 89 CR500...after we do the rod and crank.

OK, took the head off today........piston looks to be original. Did a compression test and only got 60 psi. Think the ring broke? Cyl. looks good with no groves but has some miles on it. Not sure what I want to do yet. Seems like a cool vintage CR and would be fun to blast around on. Already have a 1999 xr400 & 2000 yz125........anyway here she is:

84 CR500. Ilove this bike. I have one that I'm doing a top end on at the present. Wiseco makes piston kits for a very reasonable price. They come in 89mm(normal), 89.5mm, and 90mm. The best price gasket kit I have found is made by Moose. It cost me around $250 to do top end. I am currently waiting for my piston set to arrive. Top end rebuild on this bike couldn't get any easier and you shouldn't have any trouble finding the parts you need. Be careful not to hold the throttle wide open for too long of a period or you will be stepping up the size of your piston. Other than that the bike is indestructable...

I have the 82 and 83 480 engines. Eric says the air coolers were prone to detonation. A head mod is the ticket. With porting work, should help starting, jetting and run clean on premium, imo. The only half solid old information I dug up, was from a Honda mechanic to run 2 head gaskets. Beautiful. The fuel inlet and seat wear out quick, and the silencer core is prone to break, all due to vibration. Fresh bottle of locktite, check them nuts and bolts, replace stretched or fatigued studs also. I have no idea why I was thinking the 480 was the last air cooler? A lot of the parts from the 84 fit my bike also. All the parts seem readily available, so far. The most precious/hard to find part seems to be the oem rear brake cables. Vintage Bob

And, he has a right hand kickstarter, too!! Nice looking bike. Be sure and check the rod bearing and mains when you redo the top end. Might be due new crank seals. If it were mine, I'd probably take the engine apart and replace main bearings, seals and check the rod bearing, just for peace of mind. Carb needle jet and jet needle sometimes wear on these and make them run a bit rich, too.
