1986 Xr80

Looking for help with my son's bike. It was really hard to start when cold. Then just wouldn't start, no spark. Changed spark plug, air filter, and new points. Cleaned carb. Still takes a few too many kicks to start but then it does run ok, but not right. Dies when I give it gas and at idle spits out dark smoke. Never did that before.

Also, the idle seems to fluctuate on its own, sort of up and down, can't get it to stay at a good speed. Any help would be appreciated.

sounds like an air leak somewhere, lack of compression??????

ok i got the bike running great. new plug, points, air filter, cleaned carb.
New O ring on carb to manifold solved the air leak.

So the only problem remains starting when cold. I'll kick it it runs for two seconds then dies. Kick runs for 10 seconds.... kick 30 sec. kick 1 min. etc.

then it runs great once warmed up. Good throttle response more power than ever before.

any suggestions on the starting problem.
