Jeremy, (or anyone else that can help),
I began the process of changing fluid and resealing the rear shock on my 1998 KX 250 (the shock was leaking fluid) when I noticed what might be a problem. The body of the rear shock appears to have some sort of internal coating that has flaked off on about the bottom 1 1/2 inches of the body. The shock body is $367 from my local dealer (Then I still have to re-seal and charge it). Should I rebuild it as is? Should I look for a used/rebuildable shock or is this a common problem for this year? If I look for a used replacement, are there other years that will fit? Any aftermarket suggestions?
I'm just an average weekend rider, so I'm not looking for the most high-performance ($) option. I just want a dependable shock rebuild at (of course) the lowest possible cost.
Any help anyone can give is greatly appreciated.
