Got a lead on a clean 1999 KTM 380 E/XC for about $3k. A little pricey, but I can probably get him down to the mid 2's...

Anyone have an opinion on this bike for trail use by a big (as in weight) rider? This'll be my first real dirt bike...

How's is maintenance on this bike. I'm pretty OK with streetbike engines, but it has been a LONG time since any of my wrenches were anywhere close to a 2 stroker...

Thanks,

Larry

Great bike, but muy muy fast. The power is close to the old open class racers, like the CR500 and the KX500.

Excellent trail bike and wrenching it should be a breeze compared to a 4st.

Great bike. It is somewhat down on power compared to the CR500. That is a good thing for most riders, as the power delievery is fairly mellow on the 380. They were quite long lived engines and reliable too,,, when new. Of course a used bike is anybodys guess.

6'1, 245 lbs. here. I loved my 380. I picked it up after a 15 year break from riding. One suggestion...go ahead and pick up a new rear fender and take the black fender extension off as soon as you get the bike...save yourself some $. Shift early and ride a gear high. I ran 13/52 gearing most of the time, but 14/52 will smooth out the power delivery quite a bit. My rear fender replacements (2) were attributable to low speed technical sections where my weight got back a little and the throttle got a little extra tug. $3k is too high in my opinion. I sold mine in the spring for $2400 and it was as clean as they come. Maintenance will be easy. Take a look if you want.

GREAT bike, I'm running a 1998 sx380 in hair scrambles, and the 500s can't get out of my way fast enough. The lightness, and the power are amazing, coming out of corners. Almost no maintenance in 2 seasons, other then fluids, and tires.
